Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Brandye - "How Long" (4:04)
  2. Queen Samantha - "Take A Chance" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:59)
Review: More from dusty-fingered don DJ Muro's Digura edit series. This time round, he's focused on two fabulous but often overlooked disco gems. On the A-side it's all about Brandye's punchy, funk-fuelled, disco era crossover soul cover of Ace's much-loved 1974 sing-along 'How Long' - a sublime interpretation that's easily the best version of the much-covered song we've heard. Basically, it's an energetic, impassioned version of an end-of-night classic; what's not to like? Over on the flip, Muro takes his rusty scalpel to Queen Samantha's largely instrumental, Italo-disco classic 'Take a Chance' - a spacey, synth-powered chunk of peak-time chug that has long been championed by some of the World's most knowledgeable disco DJs.

  1. Chahan - "Jungle" (Pile Ou Faune mix) (5:20)
  2. Monsieur Mercredi - "Ego" (4:48)
  3. Quidam - "Double Trouble" (6:42)
  4. Quidam - "Lebsa" (5:52)
Review: More from the Paris-based Mercredi collective, whose distinctive take on electronic music - first showcased via a solo single from key member Quidam last year - draws on a wealth of disparate musical influences. For proof, check out the A-side, where Chahan's 'Jungle (Pile Ou Faune Mix)' - a quirky but rather good blend of deep house, 80s zouk beats and glassy-eyed synth-pop sounds - is followed by the soca-goes-street soul sweetness of Monsieur Mercredi's 'Ego'. Quidam takes over on the flip, first offering up the classic house flourishes, trance builds and bustling beats of the acid-splashed 'Double Trouble', before getting all exotic on the Mali-meets-early-Massive Attack headnodder 'Lebsa'.

  1. Nicola Cruz - "Tu Recuerdo" (5:02)
  2. FE - "Tarde O Temprano" (4:55)
  3. Quixosis - "Vibras" (4:05)
  4. NTFL - "Vacio" (3:24)
Review: Calypso are back with another clutch of exciting mavericks orbiting the weirder end of the contemporary club spectrum. There are minimal wave influences to be tacitly detected on Nicola Cruz's "Tu Recuerdo" as well as kind of stripped back acid freakiness, while in FE's "Tarde O Temprano" there's even more gritty, industrial tinged bite in the billowing surges of machine rhythms. Quixosis takes some wonderfully lilting traditional percussion and gives it a freaky treatment which makes for the kind of slow jam Weatherall would have wielded with aplomb. NTFL finishes this ear-snagging compilation off with the plaintive, Dembow-tinted "Vacio".

  3. Vincent Inc & Jon Dasilva - "Thinkin About U" (Questionmarq mix) (7:45)
  4. Sasha Makin & Suntetic - "Drumatik" (7:23)
Review: The Manuscript mission rolls on unabated as the Ukranian label pairs long lost deep house gems with more contemporary productions. Slam Mode's "Morning Side Dr" is a gorgeous cut laden with plush synth tones to melt the hardest of dancers, while Dennis DeSantis' "Leisure" feeds touches of EBM into a mellow, dubby construction that spans styles with ease. Label boss Vincent Inc joins up with Jon Da Silva for "Thinkin About U", which Questionmarq turns into a delightfully quirky remix before Sasha Makin and Suntetic round the EP off with the epic "Drumatik".

Review: Platform 23 continue to do a great service to all seekers of furtive sounds from the DIY underground, this time shining a light on the wonderful Mode I/Q. Anyone who digs the sound of New York-tinged new wave and danceable post punk will love this record - the limber disco funk of the rhythm section meets with squalling guitar textures and dubby FX, all shot through with a hooky pop sensibility that makes this record so easy to fall in love with. "Confidence" is especially strong, as is the ramshackle party starter "Two Different Things". It seems there's no end to the overlooked gems from this golden era of independent music - it's time to catch up with Mode I/Q and file them next to your favourite disco-not-disco movers and shakers.

Review: Q.A.S.B."is a funk and soul group that formed in Tokyo in 2005 and is influenced by James Brown, Kool & The Gang, and Sly & The Family Stone. They have put out four albums before now and they can do nice smooth groovers as well as more mellow and laid back tunes for home listening. 'Escape' and 'Gotta Believe' is their latest single release from late last year now finally making its way to wax. The a-side has dazzling synths next to more organic and dusty rhythm work with funky licks leading the way and the flip is similar with its cosmic rays and nice loose limbed beats. Both have been subtly reworked here.

Funk
  1. The Jet Leg (feat Ryo Nakata (Osaka Monaurail)) (4:21)
  2. Wolf (4:03)
Review: We've yet to hear a record from QASB that isn't either sweet soul perfection or riotous, party-starting funk perfection. Predictably, "The Jet Leg", their latest must-have "45", is another heavyweight slab of revivalist funk-soul brilliance. The A-side title track is pure heat, with guest vocalist Ryo Nakata (or Osaka Monaurail fame) doing his best James Brown impression atop a bed of sweaty deep funk drums, rising horns, bluesy guitar solos and elongated Hammond organ chords. Flipside "Wolf" is equally as heavy and energetic, this time with dense, Latin-tinged percussion, loose-limbed drum breaks, jammed-out Clavinet riffs and more rousing horns catching the ear. Like the A-side, it's a belter!

Review: Qoso is a Paris-based producer who has previously released on In Paradisum and collaborated with Low Jack. The latter reference should give you a hint as what to expect from "Morning Routine", a four-track missive of experimental electronica and mutant techno that tends towards the fuzzy, clanking and otherworldly. There's much to enjoy, from the spaced-out Autechre-in-dub flex of "Sweatpants" and the quirky combination of twittering synth lines, post-electro beats and rumbling bass that is "Tabi Shoes", to the fizzing electronics and galloping machine beats of closing cut "Exfolio". Spacey, acid-fired opener "Cock-A-Doodle-Do", where military machine drum snares, foreboding bass and subtle acid lines catch the ear, is also pretty darn good.

Review: Fresh from dropping a fine mini-album on Djak-Up-Bitch (DUB), rave-loving electronic fusionist Quadratschulz (real name Carsten Schulz) pops up on Golden Pudel's admired Pudul Produkte label for the very first time. It's a rather cheery and ear-pleasing collection all told, with the sometime Shipwrec artist focusing on combining cheery and colourful synthesizer melodies with a variety of eccentric, on-point machine rhythms. The pick of the bunch is arguably surging opener 'Duke of Sealand', where Schulz usual sparkling electronic lead lines dance away atop skittish, high-octane beats and a rubbery, funk-fuelled bassline. That said, there are plenty of treats elsewhere across the EP, with the classic '90s IDM flex of 'Gestalt' and the deliciously tactile, acid-flecked deep house colour of 'I Don't Believe' standing out.

Review: After the late nite, neon-red funk of his last release 'The Digital Fantasy' (which picked up support from the likes of Benji B, Alexander Nut & Ross Allen), Quaid returns with a new ep: 'CFE'.AIn contrast to the strung out, hazy eroticism of 'The Digital Fantasy', here the heart rate has elevated and the signals pushed further into the red. 'Nightlyfe' best illustrates this with its rough hats, minor chords and irrepressible rhythm. 'Body Forms' is a nod back to the hydraulic, locked funk of Quaid's previous releases, whilst 'Tango' offers Huerco S style synths under subverted Prince Housequake-era drums.A'99%' weaves around a driving bass algorithm and the insistent vocal refrain supplied by longtime collaborator Dziko.A. There's a change in mood here, the night has passed and sunrise is moments away. Lights on tomorrow's horizon glint endless glass, dust and chrome...

  2. Run To Me
Review: Part of Outta Sight's Modern Soul Essentials series, Sidney's career is mapped neatly across this beautiful 7". Lead track "I Don't Do This" first came our way on his second album So Sexy. Released in 1979 there's a touch of the big disco production of the time while retaining bucket loads of warmth and sentiment. "Run To Me", meanwhile, comes from his debut album I Enjoy Loving You. Released in 1974, it takes a much more classical soul form with slightly less focus on the tight instrumentation and more emphasis on Sid's rich vocals and the complementing lush harmonies. Two versions of soul, one killer 7", don't miss out.

Review: Having made a name for himself around the world, DJ Will Holland aka Quantic finally launches his own record label. Entitled Selva Records it kicks off with a new and steamy 7" featuring Denitia. Her vocals are the butter on top of the sweet production, which is late night neo-soul and jazzy. The track has plenty of room for emotions to sink in, and a golden sound that is superbly lush and luxuriant. Says the artist on his latest link with Denitia, "I think Denitia and I both had a new confidence about working together and were excited about the new sounds we were building." Too right.

Review: This new EP by Quasar is a deeply emotional release. It's about the evolution of the French producer's state of mind in recent years, taking in his mistakes, success and love. All in all it's an evolution heard across all tracks, and he hopes to make you feel the same as he did while composing them. Beginning with the meditative piano timbres of the title track, followed by the deep and dusty dubstep of 'Inutile' on side A. Over on the flip, we have the knackered, off-kilter and arcane vibe of 'Ambivalent' followed by the tripped-out low end theories of 'External Single Processor'. Following up equally impressive releases for the likes of Artikal Music and oundation Audio, bear witness to yet more masterful minimal bass by Remy Gallet.
