  1. Basement Freaks - "White Hot" (feat Kylie Auldist - Basement Freaks remix) (3:39)
  2. John Turrell - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Basement Freaks remix) (4:20)
Review: Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

Experimental/Electronic
  1. Marine (Woo version) (4:35)
  2. AA Cleo (Felicia Atkinson version) (3:19)
Review: Alexis Georgopoulos and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's Fragments Of A Season was one of the highlights of Emotional Response's output in 2017, centred around blissful, Balearic instrumentation that shone a spotlight on the considerable talents of these accomplished artists. Now the label is revisiting the material with a couple of finely selected versions, the first coming from Emotional regulars Woo, who dutifully inject "Marine" with their effervescent, otherworldly expressions and create a glistening masterpiece in the process. Felicia Atkinson then tackles "AA Cleo" and sends it out onto the horizon in a haze of reverb romanticism, muffled percussive rumbles and murmuring vocals.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Melford Jackson - "Southern Africa" (3:36)
  2. Family Man & Youth Professional - "Southern Version" (version) (3:51)
Review: More than 40 years after its initial release, Afrik revisit the blissed out reggae of Melford Jackson's one and only hit, "Southern Africa". At its heart is some fantastic chord work, which trills and shimmers above the rumbling drums and jangling little guitar riffs. The flip finds Jamaican reggae bass player Family Man link with Youth Professional Band for the enchantingly aimless and wandering "Southern Version", in which it is so easy, and so enjoyable, to get lost in on a lazy afternoon.

Dub
  1. Bagigi Dub (4:04)
  2. WW Dub (4:23)
Review: Standby for a proper cosmic trip on this brilliant digital dub delight from Planet Rescue. It features two tracks by Brussels-based trio Virginia Genta, David Vanzan and Ernesto Gonzalez who have run through a world of trippy effects. Out the other side come these more spaced-out versions of their sound under the name Jahder. "Bagigi Dub" is a rickety, sci-fi dub with lumpen drums and watery chords that melt you over and over again. Loping bass, delays that disappear to an infinite horizon and gentle organ chords characterise the deep cut b-side.

Soul
  1. Etta James & Sugar Pie Desanto - "In The Basement" (Soul Flip edit) (3:20)
  2. John Gary Williams - "My Sweet Lord" (Soul Flip edit) (3:59)
Review: On their latest limited edition salvo, the hardworking Soul Flip crew (AKA experienced DJs and producers Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo) gets to work on two more stomping dancefloor cuts from the golden age of soul. First up on side A is a gently tooled-up and tightened up take on Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto's 1966 floor-heater "In The Basement", a hybrid soul-jazz/rhythm and blues jam rich in rubbery double bass, bustling drums, restless handclaps and brilliant lead vocals from the two legendary soul singers. On the flip they tackle Memphis musician John Gary Williams' 1972 cover of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord", which brilliantly re-imagines the former Beatles' spiritual song as a sweaty gospel-soul stomper.

  4. Sweet Sweet Soul (2:32)
Review: New funk delivered the old way; Original Gravity follow up the 2017 hype of Floyd James & The GTs debut "The Switchback" with this powerful four-track EP. Charged with a strong northern soul feel both "Keep Lifting Me Higher" and "The Sweetest Thing" lead with the beat as Floyd and his super-tight band bounce back and forth. Flip for more energetic mischief as "The Wig" goes turbo blues while "Sweet Sweet Soul" closes on an epic, riffy sing-along. The title speaks for itself.

  1. Rosegold (5:07)
  2. Are You Ready? (3:20)
Review: JJ and The Beholders blast the doors off with their debut single "Rosegold". A powerful bluesy lament, everything from the spacious production to the hammonds that croon behind Joshua ooze soul and sentiment. Meanwhile on the B we hit northern soul territory with a thumping beat, minimal instrumentation and stacks of room for Joshua's tones to shine through. Behold that that horn led middle-eighth. Pow!

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. FKA Lany (4:17)
  2. Drakon (4:29)
Review: Operating out of Saint Petersburg, Kito Jempere has been bringing a broad church of influences to bear on his vintage grooves for labels including Pleasure Unit, Bordello A Parigi, Bahnsteig 23 and many more. Now he's the latest to lend his touch to Duca Bianco's series of 7" edits, following strong entries from Cherrystones and Tom Bolas. A side cut, "FKA Lany," is a slow and bombastic jam with a boogie-tastic lead and oodles of swooning female vocals, while the flip tackles a Thomas Leer classic with lashings of Oriental mysticism. Both tracks should suit eclectic spinners with a taste for 80s production.
