  2. The Sixteen Steps - "Montgat" (6:46)
  3. His Dirty Secrets - "Structures" (6:15)
  4. Further Reductions - "Another Stranger" (4:56)
Review: BOOM! Our favourites, Cititrax, roll the third editions of Tracks out onto our shelves, and the results are unsurprisingly strong on this excellent various artists comp. It's a mixed bag of skills, as per usual, and the sounds are those of a new NYC, fuelled by a new sort of post-industrial sensibility. Amato Y Mariana open with the tight beats and groove of "Queires Bailar", followed closely by the ominous compositions of the EBM-flavoured "Montgat" from The Sixteen Steps. On the flip, His Dirty Secrets bleeps out some morphed acid on "Structures", and "Another Stranger" from Further Reductions churns out a slow, mild-mannered house experiment with its roots clearly planted in the coldest of waves. Sick.

  3. Irradia (4:07)
  4. Slightly Mad (4:31)
Review: In recent years, Daniel Baldelli's original productions have tended towards the funkier end of the cosmic disco spectrum. That's certainly what you get here, as the Afro-cosmic pioneer once again joins forces with regular studio partner Marco Dionigi. Of course, there are nod to the chugging, arpeggio-heavy world of Italo-disco - see the Balearic disco dreaminess of "Irradia" and cosmic funk-rock shuffle of "Slightly Mad" - but even these mind-altering journeys come blessed with crackling funk guitars and tasty Clavinet sounds. Our picks are opener "Rusty", a bassline-driven, funk-fuelled Idjut Boys style dub disco number, and the pleasingly percussive, flash-fried funk of "Start The Engine".

  3. Ill Truth & Satl - "In Your Soul" (feat Charli Brix - Lenzman remix) (5:17)
  4. Total Science & FD - "3 Way" (4:54)
Review: One look at who's involved here should raise any drum and bass head's eyebrows. All genre A-listers, it's one of those release schedule entries that's guaranteed to get everyone excited, and thankfully the pudding is just as tasty as those ingredients. Break & Kyo lead the charge with 'Past North', a summertime anthem-in-the-making opening on acoustic guitar chords that wouldn't sound weird on a Me One record. Definitely one for festivals, boxfresh percussion ensures it fully fires off once the poppier elements temporarily subside. That said, DJ Marky's 'Hard Hands' trumps it for crisp drum work, delivering some typically exotic vibes. Ill Truth and Satl's 'In Your Soul', or at least its Lenzman remix, keeps the sexy and smooth warmth alive, with '3 Way' closing out on a dub-influenced tip courtesy of Total Science and FD.

  3. Raw Silk - "Do It To The Music" (Greg Wilson edit) (6:37)
  4. Shirley Lites - "Heat You Up" (Melt Down mix - Greg Wilson edit) (7:19)
Review: West End's double-pack re-edit series continues, with long-standing UK electrofunk hero and scalpel rework specialist Greg Wilson sharing a quartet of revisions. There are airings for two of Wilson's most sought-after scalpel works from the "Credit To The Edit" series - superb versions of Brenda Taylor's "You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too" and Raw Silk's "Do It To The Music" - as well as a couple of previously heard rearrangements that are on-point as per usual. Wilson first adds even more mind-altering delays and low-slung dub disco flavour to Forrrce's "Keep On Dubbin'", before superbly stretching out the mostly instrumental "Melt Down Mix" of Shirley Lites' synth-laden peak-time classic "Heat You Up".

Experimental/Electronic
  1. Luder Pre
Review: The wonderful Er + Er imprint has a knack for getting some of the biggest names in electronic music together and jamming the hell out! Some of the works by Ricardo Villalobos for the label have been simply sublime. This time, we got legend Carl Craig going head-to-head with the supremely talented Francesco Tristano in a sort of classical techno vibe. "Luder Pre" combines a mid-tempo percussive beat with some seriously twisted piano work, twisting and contorting into a right old spin. It's a one-sided gem, it's 300 copies limited, so you better get yourself one quick!

  2. Jacopo - "Aesthetic" (6:15)
  3. Otis - "Axes Of Continuity" (6:16)
  4. Fede Lijt - "Deflexion" (6:18)
Review: A dream team line up for this four way that heads off in various directions across detailed and trippy techno landscapes. Those who have been following these heads will understand what we mean- with the quartet all beginning to rise to prominence now and finally claiming the kind of respect they deserve. Saverio Celestri brings 'Ethereal', packed with direct cymbal work, lilting reversed organs creating leftfield-but-dancefloor business with plenty of usability. Midgar label manager Jacopo, toughest from the names here, takes us down an arpeggiated acid route, never quite unleashing but acting as precursor to whatever bangs come next. Otis' 'Axes of Continuity' has a simple three-four note melody mirrored by bumbling bass, and should sound ideal at anything with a free party vibe. Finally, Fede Lijt's 'Deflexion' goes deepest, twinkling chimes, submerged lows, plenty of snares.

  2. Franco - "Ei, Voce, Psiu!" (2:34)
Review: Two more rare grooves purloined from Cultures Of Soul's Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul and delivered on a sweet 45: Celia's "A Hora E Essa" is a steamy Latin funk workout from 72; all horns, cuicas and soft, honeyed vocals. Franco's "Ei, Voce, Psiu!" takes a more US funk idea with Franco's spoken vocals giving off a strong air of bandleader as the band lock down a tight groove beneath. Watch out for samba flip towards the end. Blink and you'll miss it.

Darren Woollard aka Dawl who has been putting out some wicked grooves on Libertine, Furthur Electronix and Klasse Wrecks lately gets into some proper bleep techno action on "Output" while Kiev-based Trippsy finishes up the A side with the strobed-out and tunnelling sensations of "Flashback". Flip over for Uruguay's Fede Lijtmaer who channels some Dopplereffekt vibes on "Passing By" followed by Wulffius' retro techno jam "Salty Breeze". Tip!

  3. Fanu - "Machinedrummachine" (4:36)
  4. Agzilla - "Tessellation" (5:08)
Review: Defrostatica's latest release features a veritable rogues gallery of new and established drum and bass talents. Chief amongst them is long-serving producer Digital, who kicks things off with the pop-gun synth-bass, intricate percussion edits and manipulated rave stabs of "Uprock". Speaking of razor-sharp, quick-fire drum edits, you'll find plenty more on the post-jungle madness of 6Blocc, Calculon and Shamanga's superb "Call Out". Turn to the flip for Fanu's fearsome "Machine Drum Machine" - think punchy D&B with added pots and pans percussion - and the hot-to-trot, early morning sub-bass pressure of Agazilla's dark and creepy "Tessellation".

Review: Next up on To Rack & Ruin release we have a split 12" full of Italian goodness! Futuro Tropicale has been a regular fixture of recent years at The Electric Elephant festival where his double team DJ sets alongside Balera FM have been the stuff of crate diggers dreams.. his voyage into the studio has not disappointed either. Velenoso is a wonderful bubbly box of chuggy, acidic, psychadelic, afro disco that rolls along with spaced out guitars & basslines. Disko Selectors have been staunch supporters of To Rack & Ruin so we were thrilled to hear some of their studio output and promptly snapped up Hiroshima for release they've got it right on the money and done that amazing feat of creating an absolute bomb of a track that pretty much is the same 8 bar loop throughout without tiring finally giving way to an absolute synth-tastic display of dance floor destroying bomb.

  4. Boris & Fiedel - "Div'hain" (6:19)
Review: The latest edition of Berghain's own series comes from a number of talented veterans who all have something different to say about house and techno. That, in itself, is something to appreciate these days. Electric Indigo, whose been balling with the likes of Berlin's DJ Hell since the early 00's, launches a cautious, minimalistic techno experimenting through "Registers", followed by Stefan Rein's bleepy techno tool "Panther" - the sort of bomb you'd expect to hear in the pit at about 4am on a Sunday morning. The B-side features Macro's and Don't Be Afraid's RRoxymore, with "Tropicalcore", a comparatively more sparse and kinetic rhythm track that replaces the drones and pads in favour of ritualistic dance elements in the form of drums; Boris & Fiedel's "Div'hain" closes the eighth chapter of the series with a driving, menacing blur of 4/4 drums and gently acidic bass waves. Excellent.

  1. F On - "Missing" (7:01)
  2. Urtzi - "Missing" (rework) (8:40)
Review: Even by the standards of limited pressings, the latest missive from the Downbeat Black Label is a rarity. Remarkably, only 75 copies of this double header from F On and Urtzi have been pressed. The former kicks things off with A-side "Missing", a cranky and crackling trip through field recordings of pinball machines, unsettling electronics, surprisingly jazzy synth sounds, hazy aural textures and the occasional hypnotic pulse of dub techno. On the flipside Urtzi offers up a brand new interpretation of the same track, retaining some of the slowly vibrating electronics and opaque chords, while also adding dub techno style delay trails and a more structured, locked-in dub techno beat.

Review: F&Z are back on our charts with their usual gust and panache, placing absolutely no care on who is doing what, or why they're doing it. Much like the original UK garage days, this crew is putting out firebomb after firebomb, focusing only on the beats and the swing, much like the artists who have inspired them. "Track 1" is a suave, laid-back garage joint with a misty haze enwrapping its slick beats and bass tones; "Track 2", much like its counterpart, is a magnificently balanced shell-shocker, bashing out the UK heat on the floor, mashing up swinging beats with a whole load of filtered percussion and ultra-sexy arrangements. Large up!

Review: Minimal Wave's Cititrax imprint has had one of its most prolific years to date in 2013, with the release of excellent albums from Streetwalker and The KVB, and a KVB remix EP featuring the likes of Regis, Silent Servant and Shifted. The Veronica Vasicka-helmed label looks to expand on that success with a number of forthcoming releases planned over the next few months commencing with the debut EP of Facit, whose Mat At Duvorna EP is described by the label as "quintessential melancholic Swedish wave at its finest." Comprised of Joakim Karlsson and Mai Nestor on vocals, the Gothenburg native Karlsson has previous form as Jocke & Elliot, under which name he released an electro-inspired 12-inch on Swedish label Kust Musik in 2010. this new project seems to be more downtempo in nature, with a sound that most resembles a modern day version of French synthwave duo Deux, making them perfect for the stable of labels run by Vasicka.

Review: Still mysterious, obscure and now even harder to decipher any actual facts due to the omnipotence of BTS, Fake Love hit their sixth volume of obscure edits since launching earlier this year. Once again it's a full cuddle of shades and flavours. "Track One" leads with more sleazy disco action, all slippery and blessed with a classic 80s flyboy rap, "Track Two" takes us deep into the heart of Lagos circa 74 where vital afro horns are laced over a fully primed disco groove, "Track Three" winds up this particular edition with a little Amazonian magic. Dust off those air pipes, you're going to need them...

Review: In 1977, Libyan musician Ahmed Fakroun flew to Milan to record some new material. The results were showcased on a pair of 7" singles, the most sought-after of which is being given the reissue treatment by Italy's Groovin label. The real winner here is "Nisyan", an Arabic interpretation of blue-eyed soul that fixes a baggy, sun-kissed sensibility, ear-catching Moog solos and a killer groove. "La Ya-Hob" is, if anything, even baggier and dreamier, with Fakroun delivering touchy-feely vocals over exotic, Middle Eastern synthesizer lines and a rolling, soft touch jazz-funk groove. Both cuts are equally breezy and jaunty, lingering in the memory for hours after each rotation.

  1. Auidny (3:39)
  2. Njoo El Leyl (4:07)
Review: Earlier in the year, Italian reissue specialists offered up a tidy reissue of Ahmed Fakrun's "Nisyan", a sought-after chunk of Arabic blue-eyed soul that originally appeared as a seven-inch single in 1977. Here they offer up a new edition of its predecessor, which the Lebanese musician recording during the same recording sessions in Milan. With its flanged guitars, lolloping reggae-funk swing, spacey synths and warm bass, "Auidny" is particularly inspired, though the West Coast AOR-influenced warmth of flipside "Njoo El Leyl" is arguably equally as addictive. Both are superb, though, so it's great that Groovin' has slung them out again.

Review: French producer Alec Falconer presents his third release, following up some great EPs on EXT and Entity London. "Flicker Zone" comes courtesy of local imprint Rue De Plaisance and sees the Parisian deliver more retro influenced flavours. From the booming high intensity workout that is the title track that goes for an electro vibe to the very Dopplereffekt influenced "Les Volets" - this is material made for the dancefloor. On the flip it's all about the chill out room though: from the mellow breaks of "L3D 121D" to the acid ambient journey "View From The L2", this 12" successfully demonstrates Falconer's vast sonic repertoire.

  1. Good Good Feeling (2:28)
  2. Standing On Guard (alternate version) (2:41)
Review: One of Wilson Pickett's earlier bands, The Falcons unwittingly laid down a Northern Soul anthem in 1960 with "Good Good Feeling". Stomping drums, big horns and massive harmonies, it's still as sweaty and boisterous as it was 55 years ago. Flip for an interesting 1990 take on one of their most famous cuts "Standing On Guard". Subtle with the synths with full focus on the vocals, however many reincarnations the band has experienced in the 25 years that passed. Good feelings all round.
