Review: Since 2006, Leipzig-based Bondage Music have had a consistent output of quality deep/tech house grooves by an all-star cast from Mihai Popoviciu, Markus Homm, to Pornbugs and NTFO. Once again showing off their sonic diversity on a various artists EP, "Bondage Games Part 5" features Deep Vibes main man Sascha Dive pursuing his newfound love of cavernous and glacial dub techno sounds on the stark "Dark Night", while label staple Frink goes deeper into the late night on the slinky and seductive bounce of "Vega". Similarly on the flip, Toman serves up some sensual mood music on his offering "Time To Time" and finally Philipp Gonzalez goes for a moody and atmospheric vibe on dancefloor drama "Open Hips".

Deep House
  1. The Tease (6:24)
  2. Stomp (7:43)
  3. BEP (6:49)
  4. Soul Searching (HVBR edit) (7:47)
Review: George Feely's previous outings on Random Mind State offered "Random Edits" - floor-focused reworks that combined loops and samples from disco and funk cuts with contemporary drum machine rhythms. On his return to the imprint after a two-year absence Feely flips the script, instead offering up a quartet of personal productions on a house tip. Up first is the garage-influenced peak-time bump of "The Tease" - all ear-catching stabs, swinging drums and raw analogue bass, before turning your attention to the hip-house-goes-rave insanity of acid-fired highlight "Stomp". There's a slightly deeper but similarly retro-futurist feel about B-side opener "BEP", while "Soul Searching (HVBR Edit)" is a fine house style revision of what sounds like a Philadelphia Soul classic.

  3. Reverberator (8:28)
  4. Dub Version (6:13)
Review: Berlin soldier Felix Krone continues his fractured beat assault into the 2020s with another powerful slap of technoid D&B excursions. "Deconstructor" sets the scene with a pneumatic beat drill before we dip low into the foggy sonics and halftime swamp of the contemptuous title track. Flip for more singular sounds; "Reverberator" is a woozy game of echo location as sounds fold in from all sides, creating this immense sinking sand sensation while the soft-padded kicks and oceanic pads of "Dub Version" do their best to keep us sunk. Deliciously heavy.

  2. Diamond In The Night (instrumental) (5:26)
  3. Diamond In The Night (Flemming Dalum remix) (6:25)
  4. Diamond In The Night (Longdrink remix) (6:40)
Review: Sadly departed Italo-disco producer Gianfranco Felli enjoyed a successful career rebirth before passing away in 2015, though it's his early '80s work - and specifically 1983 debut single "Diamond In The Night" - that remains most celebrated. Here his most famous creation gets the reissue treatment, with the original Vocal and Instrumental versions - throbbing, bubbly chunks of purist Italo-disco pleasure complete with sequenced synthesizer basslines and cheeky pop flourishes - being supplemented by two new revisions. Flemming Dalum steps up first with an extended take that adds extra dancefloor weight to Felli's original version, while the Longdrink remix delivers cheerier, synth-pop-fired nu-disco thrills.

Review: Melbourne-based imprint LKR Records, formerly known as Lou Karsh Rhythms, return with an impressive various artist compilation here. "Exertion VA II" reaches far and wide to compile the forward thinking sounds of six great local producers, touching on the experimental but functional pocket of electro: as heard on fierce bass-driven sci-fi jams like Hymns' "Out Of The Head Into The Body", A-Sim's "Express Yourself", to rolling breakbeat action courtesy of Sputnik One ("Isolator"), junglist riddims (ANSV's "Rainstorm") and even some experimental fare by Fingers Of God and Percy Silicon.

  2. Smarty Pants (single version) (2:37)
  3. Are You Ready For Me? (Uplifting version) (6:02)
  4. Are You Ready For Me? (4:06)
Review: Originally released way back in 1973, "Smarty Pants" is arguably one of the foundation records of the Philadelphia Soul sound that quickly evolved into the disco sound we know and love today. Here First Choice's superb original version (A2) gets a reissue, this time accompanied by an extended multi-track "Re-Freak" by DJ Spinna that sounds like a classic Tom Moulton "disco mix". Side B boasts two versions of 1976 soaring disco cut "Are You Ready For Me": a gently beefed-up, house-friendly "Uplifting Version" by remixer T-Groove and the Norman Harris and Stan Watson-produced original version. If disco is your thing, you need this in your life.

  3. Skyhigh (7:41)
  4. Upwind (6:00)
Review: Since debuting on Highsteppin' way back in 2009, German four-piece First Touch has delivered some of the finest revivalist boogie, electrofunk and proto-house around. Here they return to Italian imprint Mother Earth with another essential EP of synth-powered goodness. The A-side is all about "Do You Wanna Dance", a clap-happy synth-funk masterpiece that's also given a tougher, funkier and more bass-heavy tweak by DJ Spinna. Flipside opener "Skyhigh" is a breezy, piano-heavy boogie-era disco-funk affair that reminded us of Randy Muller and (New York) Sky, while "Upwind" is a deep electrofunk shuffler blessed with effortlessly emotive piano solos.

  1. Stop It (6:18)
  2. Ya Didn't (5:45)
  3. Crowd Control (5:59)
Review: You know what? There just isn't that much good electro-minimal around as much these days, and one of the only labels still churning out the goods is Claude Von Stroke's Dirtybird imprint. As per usual, the bearded American is one to spot new and exciting talent, and Fisher is one such recent finding that has struck a chord, not just with us but also with DJs and dancers everywhere. This new EP kicks off with the grizzly bass of "Stop It", a bass-fuelled tech monster complete with the label's trademark vocal samples, while "Ya Didn't" steps closer to the traditional Chicago house framework - also driven by a healthy dose of bass. "Crowd Control" ties the EP off with a twisted, filtered groove that is...just...SEXY. Bless up, Fisher.

  4. Boogie Meltdown (4:10)
Review: So far we've yet to hear a duff track or release from Flamingo Pier, a hybrid Anglo-Kiwi crew whose vibrant and colourful music combines a plethora of musical influences in pursuit of disco-fired dancefloor gold. There's tons of goodness to be found throughout their latest collection of cuts, from the drowsy, Holy Ghost style deep disco warmth of opener "Tripping Up", to the sprightly '80s electrofunk brilliance of "Boogie Meltdown". Sandwiched in between you'll find two more heaters: the kaleidoscopic, synth-heavy nu-disco cheeriness of "Indigo" and "Jungle Groove", a tight and throbbing proto-house number that sounds like the missing link between Paul Simpson and Escort.

Review: Seattle-based producer Taylor Hawkins is Flora FM, and now follows up his 2019 solo EPs Chaos Light and Mycelination with a new one on London label Exotic Robot. as always he brings curiousness to his electro, particularly on opener "Softest Moon". It has big breakbeats and sci-fi pads, but a whole eco system of little alien sounds that add real vitality to the beats. "Magic Pebbles" is another trippy and colourful cut with a soft acid bassline, "Cross Antennae" is slick and futuristic tackle and "Bronze Teeth" is an all out old school rave with bells, whistles, the lot.

  4. Parallel Space (Conforce remix) (8:01)
Review: Renowned since his Livity Sound days for delivering complex rhythms, heavy basslines and intricate electronics, Forest Drive West pitches up on Echochord with a deliciously spaced-out EP that explores the dub techno side of his multi-faceted musical persona. He eases us in gently via head-in-the-clouds opener "Creation Dub", a hypnotic, eyes-closed affair rich in slow broken techno rhythms and echoing Deepchord synths, before delivering the sparse, minimalist dub techno fuzz of "Drift". Side B is all about "Parallel Space", with Forest Drive West's metallic, Livity Sound-esque original mix - think broken techno meets dub techno - being paired with a Conforce remix that re-imagines it as an ear-pleasing slice of rolling dub techno positivity.

Cat: NR 002. Rel: 13 Jan 20
  1. Pulser (9:12)
  2. Sky Birds Of Ki (7:32)
  3. Beyond Sector 9 (8:00)
Review: After first emerging in 2018, hitherto unknown London name The Forgotten Man returns for a second EP on their own noctu recordings, delving into the arcane language of intricate machine soul spanning the deeper end of techno and electro. The EP opens up with "Pulser", an uplifting, acid tinged 4/4 jam with resplendent synth work spilling out of every pore. "Sky Birds Of Ki" takes a more broken rhythm template, but keeps the effervescent melodic content squarely in the foreground. "Beyond Sector 9" takes things cool and intricate, capturing a little of the magic you'd expect from classic Metamatics in the process.

Review: Frankey & Sandrino are long time Watergate regards but have somehow not landed on the Berlin clubs own label yet. Now that changes with Nova, three tracks of dark and innovative tech house that come with a remix from Tiefschwarz. All the tracks stay low and subtle, with "Chimes" lead by a mysterious lead, "Nova" laced up with some soft, undulating acid and "Black Hole" getting a little more freaky with trippy bleeps and colourful synth chords. For their part, Tiefschwarz offer the most driving version complete with some dusty breaks

  4. Together Trio (5:41)
Review: The first volume in the Frescoedits series received a few approving nods and winks when it hit stores in October 2019. We'd expect this follow-up to be equally as admired. It begins with a low-slung disco bumper - think cowbell-heavy percussion, a gigantic walking bassline and "Papa Don't Preach" vocal samples" - and ends with the blue-eyed soul, Joe Cocker-esuqe warmth of "Together Trio". In between you'll find two more certified treats: the quirky, reggae-influenced European synth-pop bounce of "Non Conviene" and the heavyweight dub disco/punk-funk fusion of "Umile", which sounds like a subtly tooled-up version of the sort of thing that might have been made in Bristol in 1983.

  3. Future - "Daffy's Secret Project" (5:15)
  4. Sicknote, Sweetpea & Dissect - "Jahlocia" (6:08)
Review: This is how you kick off a new decade. Skeleton have been consistent with their brutalist dispatches since re-rising in 2014 and this new V/A levels things up once again. Jem One lights the fire with darkcore grit as layers of distorted breaks and strange alien rave textures twist in and out of the mix. Section follows with nasty rave stabs and a two-step so well chiselled you could trim your whiskers on it before Future flips things for an entirely different vibe on the minimal, subby and loose-limbed "Daffy's Secret Project". Finally Sicknote, Sweetpea and Dissect bring the funk on "Jahlocia". Once again the breaks are the focus but there's more than enough groove in the bassline to put on meat on everyone's table. Bad to the bones!

Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

  4. Ondata - "Below" (5:42)
Review: Having ended 2019 with a fine double-album compilation, Red Laser Records has begun 2020 with the tenth instalment in their multi-artist EP series, which has now been running for the best part of eight years. Label regular Ste Spandex sets the ball rolling via "NuGroove", a wonderfully oddly swung number that wraps alien electronics, rugged acid lines and sustained organ chords around a loose-limbed rhythm track, before Baba & Ganoush excitedly jog their way through ultra-melodious Italo-disco pastures on "Stockholm". Fellow Italo revivalist Franz Scala impresses via the chiming synthesizer melodies, heavily accented vocals and cheeky 1980s Euro-pop vibes of "Ka Zan (extended dance version)", before Ondata doffs a cap to both Bobby Orlando and Patrick Cowley on the throbbing-but-melancholic "Below".
