Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: 24 years have now passed since UK hip-hop MC announced his arrival via the self-released 'Premonitions' EP. Almost a quarter of a century since making his debut, his rhymes have lost none of their bite, though by the sounds of Mork Calling Olson - his first full-length since 2017 - he's feeling a lot more world weary than he once was. That much is clear from 'Lonely World', where CW Jones and SINDYSMAN join him for a crackling, blazed, head-nodding trip-hop outing of the sort that was once the preserve of Bristolian superstar Tricky. It's a fairly accurate indicator of what's on offer, namely conscious lyrical social commentary, blazed beats, warming instrumentation, jazzy samples and occasional guest spots. The results are undeniably impressive, making 'Mork Calling Olson' a terrific return to form.

Review: Rapper Mick Jenkins is a much-loved fixture in today's hip-hop landscape, but despite his credo, he shows hardly any signs of complacency. Review: The debut full-length from George Kusunoki Miller, once better known as the YouTube characters Filthy Frank and Pink Guy, came after a poised transition to move his internet celebrity status and legions of avid followers over to a rebranded, sincere musical project under the moniker of Joji. Following on from 2017's promising In Tongues EP, the Ballads 1 LP would drop in 2018 and take the entire cloudrap scene by storm with its nuanced use of vaporwave-inflected trap production, drugged out R&B and melancholic penmanship. Serving as the launching pad for the stratospheric heights the project has reached since, this five year anniversary edition arrives with new artwork in a gatefold sleeve, and boasts some of the most essential cuts from both Miller's catalogue and internet hip-hop as a mass entity, including 'Slow Dancing In The Dark', 'Test Drive' and 'Yeah Right', while also featuring production credits from Clams Casino and a guest-verse from Trippie Redd.

Review: Joji (George Miller) debuted his first album-length solo project Ballads 1 in 2018, after reviving the formerly semi-private moniker whose first incarnation could originally only be found on YouTube. At first, Joji was a low-key outlet, via which the onetime internet comedian (popularly masquerading as Filthy Frank) could explore his sensitive side, in the form of lo-fi beats and whisper-sung verses. Review: New Jersey-based rapper Topaz Jones presents a high-octane sophomore LP, Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma, adding to the vogue of hip-hop albums channelling a nostalgic, family-reminiscent, coming-of-age aesthetic. In contrast to his 2016 debut Arcade, this album is crisper in production, spans a wider stylistic gamut, and hears the rapper tap into his upbringing in Montclair, NJ, with its lyrics building off a screenplay for an audiovisual project about his childhood. Funk is its backbone; its instrumentals gleaning everything from muted synth to clipping future-funk; this is/was the sound of Jones' formative years, and we tag along for the ride, hearing him make sense of it all retroactively.
