Review: Originally released in 1965, Oh Baby! was the third studio album by jazz organist Big John Patton on Blue Note. Landing right in the hard bop era, the six pieces hold down a sharp focus as Patton freewheels up and down his scales backed up by a tight ensemble. With Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Harold Vick on tenor sax, Ben Dixon on drums and the legendary Grant Green on guitar, Oh Baby! Is bursting with catchy grooves and recognisable licks, not least the familiar chord chops that punctuate 'Fat Judy'. It's a classic slab of jazz on one of the genre's most important labels - need we say more?

Review: Blue Note's focus reissue series Tone Poet is bringing back to life and remastering some of its most classic jazz albums. Next up is Big John Patton who is one of the many Hammond B3 organ greats signed to the label back int he day. The Kansas City born dynamo is known for bring soul to his take on jazz and he had a funk run of work during the 60s after first appearing as a sideman on Lou Donaldson's The Natural Soul and Good Gracious LPs. His solo work first came in 1963 then two years later he released his most unique work, Let 'Em Roll, a session with Grant Green and drummer Otis Finch also joined by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Originals like 'Let Em Roll' and 'Latona'' really standout.

Review: Recorded this time last year at La Picola Scala in Paris, 'Blue In Green' sees acclaimed French pianist Paul Lay join forces with drummer Dre Pallemaerts and bassist Clemens van der Freen to pay tribute to one of his heroes: jazz great Bill Evans. The results are as inspired as you'd expect, with Lay channelling the spirit of Evans - one of the finest jazz pianists of all time - while putting his own spin on proceedings. Review: God bless XL Recordings. The UK label has been at the forefront of boundary pushing music since its inception, and almost 35 years remains a seal of quality. A constant source of inspiring surprises and new sonic experiences. The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

Review: 30 years on, Slanted & Enchanted hasn't lost any of its power and potency. Stephen Malkmus formed Pavement in 1989 but it took a few years to get their debut album down. It marked their move from Drag City to Matador, and its wide circulation ahead of release built up the anticipation and ensured Pavement arrived with a splash. Comparisons and the The Fall and Swell Maps aren't without merit, but with the passing of time they become stretched given how influential Malkmus and co. wound up being on the explosion of indie rock in the 90s. Quite simply a perfect record, lovingly repressed for your listening pleasure.
