The Dynamite Cuts crew serve up another scorching 45 here with two legends taking one side a piece. Both of these tracks are making their first ever appearance on vinyl here, the first being by the funk pioneers The Fatback Band. Their 'Fatbackin' is a rare groove classic that has long got b-boy's excited and brims with energy. Flip it over and you'll find 'Matrix' by jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie - famous for his humungous cheeks once he starts playing. It's a massive tune that has been sampled endlessly by the hip-hop world and has a sweet jazz-funk groove that'll make you move.

For avant-garde jazz collectors, Black Unity Trio's sole album, 1969's Al Fatihah, has long been a genuine "holy grail" record. The Ohio-based outfit pressed and distributed just 500 copies first time around, making it one of the rarest free-jazz sets around. Happily, Gotta Groove Records has decided to reissue it, presenting the atmospheric, experimental and decidedly cosmic set in freshly remastered, audiophile-quality sound. The set itself is breathlessly brilliant in places, with wild, exuberant alto saxophone solos, sharp cello sounds and rubbery double bass rising above sweaty drums and a variety of chaotic percussion sounds. While undeniably freeform in parts, the album is also extremely expressive, offering a powerful musical commentary on what were notoriously turbulent times for the USA. No wonder it still sounds so relevant in 2020.

Legendary New York club Studio 54 has launched a new series that will deal in all the sorts of dazzling disco sounds that would have been heard in the fashionable hotspot back in its heyday. First up is this Night Magic collection with 2020 mixes of all the classics. It shares a name with the five-month Brooklyn Museum exhibition that premiered on March 13, then shut because of Corona, and is due to re-open sometime soon. Until then, get up and then get down to the soul, funk and disco fusions presented here - they ooze authenticity but all boast crisp modern production.

Bessie Banks - Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come
7"
$10.00
The amount of ultra-rare, hard to find, essential Northern Soul classics seems to be infinite. Here comes another reissue that aims to right that wrong with an officially licensed pair of tunes from the Phase One Network that has artwork based on the original promo version. 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' is brimming with soul and immediately swells your heart with its elegant strings, graceful piano chords and swirling sense of groove all lifting you off your feet. 'Try To Leave Me If You Can' is a heartbroken slow song to conjure up memories of all the loves you've lost, or maybe never had.

Leila - Like Weather (reissue)
LP
$25.88
Like Weather is electronic songwriter Leila's much hearted album from 1998. It's a real classic that has never before been reissued, until now. The remastered release first came on Aphex Twin's cult Rephlex label at a time when the artist was playing keys in Bjork's band. It's a beguiling mix of squealing electronics and lo-fi pop, lullaby-like melodies and outlier R&B, all with blurred edges, frayed textures and a warm analogue hum and hiss throughout. While some tracks are leftfield and unsettling, others are beautiful tender and affecting. This reissue will likely win the artist a wealth of new fans.

Mike Dunn / Various - Defected Presents House Masters: Mike Dunn
LP
$23.35
Mike Dunn is one of the many heroes of the Chicago house scene. He always brings those real raw vibes, a hip hop sensibility and drums that pop. His own vocals often feature to bring some extra attitude and so it is right that he cradled as a Defected House Master on this new collection in the long running series. Mike has a rich collection of classic to his name and many feature here - the chunky goodness of 'God Made Me Phunky', the tight drum programming of 'Jass Yo Azz Off', the sleazy, low-slung funk of his biggest moment 'Phreaky MF.' Add in the blistering acid attack of 'Magic Feet' and you have a vital overview of a house mainstay.

Aux 88 - Global Darkness (reissue)
12"
$10.86
As any electro-head will well know, AUX88 is one of the original Detroit pioneers. Back in 2008 he dropped this EP and now leading Dutch electro titans Creme Organization's Classics offshoot remasters it and reissues it complete with a bonus joint from DJ K1. 'Electro Muzik' is fierce from the off, with vocoded vocals and squelchy bass ripping up raw analogue drums. 'Interstellar Funk' is pure and perfect body music, with super-funk in the drum and bass combo and smeared sci-fi chords bringing all the feels. 'Alia Life Form' is another dark interplanetary trip then that DJ K1 tune 'Just Don't understand' locks you in a hall of reflective melodies and restless bass.

Steve O'sullivan - Three Trax (reissue)
12"
$11.40
Throughout his lengthy career, Steve O'Sullivan has proved adept at delivering "proper techno" tracks that are a cut above those of his contemporaries. This re-issued three-tracker for Rawax shows him doing just. A-side 'Off Message' sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. The sweatier and sleazier 'Night Nurse' boasts fizzing, fill-happy drum machine percussion and deep space chords that recall the early years of Detroit techno, while 'Porcupine Grove' is a snappy, pitched-up romp rich in crunchy TR-909 beats, faintly foreboding background chords and tight melodic loops.
