Hard LifetimeMushi 45 Japan
This sneaky 7" from Mister Mushi is a must-have for any discerning digger or lover of feelgood grooves. The A-side, 'Hard Lifetime', is a masterclass in sample-based alchemy, seamlessly blending a killer hip-hop-meets-funk groove with elements of David Byrne's iconic vocals from Talking Heads classic 'Once in a Lifetime'. The result is a wonderfully infectious and toe-tapping creation that breathes new life into one of music's most familiar tunes. The production is so expertly crafted that Byrne's vocals sound tailor-made for the backing track, a testament to Mister Mushi's skills as a producer and sample manipulator. On the flip, you'll find the instrumental version, stripped of the vocal sample but retaining all the infectious energy and groove of the A. A record that will undoubtedly get heads nodding and bodies moving, a testament to the enduring power of expertly crafted sample-based music.

Another WednesdayPaxam
Ryan Adams' Wednesday album was released in 2020 and is introspective with songwriting up there with the best Americana. It's a world away from the classic rock swagger of his previous album, Prisoner, but no less powerful. This new album takes the exact same tracklist and reinvents the sound and spirit. It's a novel approach and a refreshing way of thinking about new studio releases for a label. 'Dreaming You Backwards and 'I'm Sorry and I Love You' has more of a more baroque pop with lush string sounds embellishing the fraught emotional tension; 'Dreaming Of You Backwards' is similarly majestic with classical music references guiding it. Compare these takes with the previous record's soulful rock feel - close in some ways to the sound of Hiss Golden Messenger - and it becomes clear Adams has shed that sound completely and achieved a true reinvention.

Edits Vol 2Razor-N-Tape
Devilish edit duo Duane Harriott and Sean Marquand are Devin Dare and now they return with fresh flips to get the Razr N Tape year going. 'Dancemuzak' transforms a classic NYC disco groove into a hypnotic, driving force while 'Itsdiscotime' masterfully loops rare, mind-blowing source material into a jam for the ages. On the flip side, 'Lookin Good' delivers cheeky uptempo soul perfect for a Theo Parrish set, while '1heater4sasha' slows things down with Clavinet-driven funk. Devin Dare are surely among the best editors in the game.

This Is Not ThatMello Music Group US
Wonderfully lackadaisical is the latest LP by Apollo Brown and Crimeapple, whose conscious hip-hop stylings and threadbare productions peg a distinct era in sound, all while rendering said sound entirely their own. The New Jersey natives distil poetry and philosophy between lines, summoning utter bars of poetic justice; Brown’s dusty productions mar Crimeapple’s verses in cloggy, soft-clipped haziness, as in-out gospel samples and jazzy ride cymbals draw on a chromic influential palette. “Lawdahmercy” goes the refrain on ‘Mercy’, as ‘Apple antiphonates: “you’d better pray, ‘cos I don’t…”. Elsewhere, ‘The Problem’ and ‘Wonderful Feelin’ (with Willie The Kid) flaunt the best of NJ’s softest-footed hip-hop productions, where hard beats are further foregone in favour of experimental soundscapes.

Raw Session OneDaje Funk
Conceived for maximum floor-lift, Daje Funk is the namesake of both artist and label; here the elusive but fun-loving moniker brings another four whopper disco edit-remixes to vinyl, further charging the collective body with a haul of kitsch spirituals. Three out of four tracks here are “lovely edited” - intentional or not, we can’t resisting stealing such brilliant turns of phrase - by longtime Roman disco purveyor Les Inferno, with the support of a cracking cadre made up of fellow producers and engineers Max Pottini, Emiliano Patrick Legato and Dom Scuteri. Stefano Fusco also handles the B1; and though we don’t know the original IDs of any of the tracks here, the vibe is consistently spirited, and the artists only carefully betray their access to the original stems (made eventually obvious by faint vocal delays, extra-thwacking kick EQs, etc.).

Colliding LayersJazzaggression Norway
One of Norway’s finest jazz artists, Alex Figueira, shares a surprise mini-album via Jazzaggression, whose solar-punky, psychedelic description of the record is as gleeful as the implied beam of light which emanates from behind the artist’s front-cover printed visage, and on which the warped art nouveau typography detailing its title wafts: “a vibrant fusion of tropical rhythms layered with a dazzling array of synth-driven psychedelia.” Said to have played every instrument on the LP himself, Figueira’s ends are irreverent and sun-soaking; his ultra-obscure Norweigan tropical music scene is married well to the all-improv, time-pressed nature of the recordings going in, all of which were immured and hothoused behind the walls of Utrecht’s Studio Pelto.

The Hacker - Laser & Smoke
12"
Laser & SmokeRekids
The perfect mix of "cheeky" and "darkside" best describes this latest signing by electroclash figurehead The Hacker to Rekids, emulsifying two oppositely-humoured vibe mixers, like pink and green, horror and comedy. 'Turborave' and 'Harmonia' stir the pot from different points of view; the former uses pitched-down orchestral stabs, and the latter fires off laser-powered globs against cosmic, final-hurrah synths. The latter track, especially, is commendable for its squelch control, with said lasers firing at a ballistically variable harmonic frequencies in the breakdown; miraculously, all angles are housed in a slinky sonic wire casing, carefully conducted to tempt us to, but ultimately not, blow a fuse.

Hotel New YumaThaian
Yuma Abe's second solo album is a conceptual masterpiece steeped in nostalgia and inspired by the humour, charm and cultural richness of mid-20th century Japanese cinema. A leading figure in the modern Japanese city pop movement, Abe envisioned the project as a soundtrack for a fictional variety show set in a southern island hotel. The imagined show, hosted by a stylish hotel manager named Yuma Abe, featured skits, songs and performances blending Japanese tradition with foreign influences, exuding a fast-paced, exotic allure. The nine tracks on the album evoke a bygone era of simplicity and creativity, blending funk bass lines, tight percussion and melodic hooks. Highlights include the breezy single 'Friend', an infectious ode to resilience and joy amidst life's challenges. With its cool groove and uplifting chorus, the track perfectly encapsulates Abe's philosophy of embracing life's storms with optimism. Abe's passion for classic cinema and music shines through, transporting listeners to a vivid, sensory world where humor, sex appeal and cultural fusion reign supreme. Abe's artistry and his ability to reimagine the past with unparalleled charm is very noteworthy.
