On this second, more expansive sampler for his forthcoming album Spaces & Places, Kerri Chandler treats us to tracks inspired by - and by the wonders of mobile recording technology, produced inside - clubs including Dublin's District 8, Glasgow institution Sub Club, Lux of Lisbon and NYC's Output. Of course, the standard is uniformly high throughout - it's classic Chandler from start to finish - but our picks of a very fine bunch include the soulful piano house shimmer of 'Change Your Mind', the thrusting, bass-heavy pump of 'Subbie (Rattle The Subbie Mix)', the effortlessly slick and soulful 'Tenacity (Full Vocal Mix)' and the ludicrously sub-heavy snap of 'See The Light (Dub)'. To borrow an old cliche, this is very much, 'all killer, no filler'.

Ben Pest - General Maintenance EP
RED VINYL 12"

Sheffield's Parallax Unknown returns this week with some high calibre computer funk. On side A of this one you have the party rockin', booty-bass shenanigans of 'Fantasies' featuring samples from rapper Ludacris, while over on the flip things take a darker turn on the dystopian beats of 'UGOTME' followed by a 'euphorique' rework by Canadian D Tiffany - with the added vocals of the ultimate pop diva.

Penza Penza - Neanderthal Rock (mono)

Brazil has a new techno vanguard, and it centres on a few new key names, one of them being ANNA. Her newest EP 'Journey To The Underworld' focuses on the melodic techno sound that has of late exploded throughout Europe and beyond, although Brazil has breathed into it new life, and it shows; the titular track occasionally lets up its rhythm into absolute rhythmic freefall, while 'Surrender' and 'Dissolution' similarly give in to complete deep trancey abandon, either via their clacking 808s or drumless aural vistas.
Picture Music - Picture Music (remastered)
GATEFOLD 2XLP
LP
Picture Music's works are pining dedications to idealized, fragile beauty. At the same time, the 80s Brisbane duo's name functioned as a nice pun, with every one of their works intended as workable in film, hence "picture music". Here their groundbreaking yet lesser-spotted ambient debut album, first released in 1987 on tape, gets a wax reissue via Left Ear. We're thrown back to a candlelit array of twilit tunes, from the curious, marimba-ey narrative developer 'Ivory Coast' to the light yet evocative, heart chakra-affirming piece 'Landscape'.

Minimal Compact - Statik Dancin'
12"
Minimal Compact hailed from Israel in the 80s, spearheading the country's post-punk and new wave movement with a run of excellent albums which reached well into international scenes. On this single for Fortuna, 'Statik Dancin' from their debut EP gets revisited in its original and instrumental forms. It's a perfect slice of disco-not-disco which will go down a storm in any wave-oriented dance spot, and as a bonus treat we also get a wild style dub from the mighty Mad Professor who twists the original out in the grand tradition of the 80s B side.
