Hard LifetimeMushi 45 Japan
This sneaky 7" from Mister Mushi is a must-have for any discerning digger or lover of feelgood grooves. The A-side, 'Hard Lifetime', is a masterclass in sample-based alchemy, seamlessly blending a killer hip-hop-meets-funk groove with elements of David Byrne's iconic vocals from Talking Heads classic 'Once in a Lifetime'. The result is a wonderfully infectious and toe-tapping creation that breathes new life into one of music's most familiar tunes. The production is so expertly crafted that Byrne's vocals sound tailor-made for the backing track, a testament to Mister Mushi's skills as a producer and sample manipulator. On the flip, you'll find the instrumental version, stripped of the vocal sample but retaining all the infectious energy and groove of the A. A record that will undoubtedly get heads nodding and bodies moving, a testament to the enduring power of expertly crafted sample-based music.

Another WednesdayPaxam
Ryan Adams' Wednesday album was released in 2020 and is introspective with songwriting up there with the best Americana. It's a world away from the classic rock swagger of his previous album, Prisoner, but no less powerful. This new album takes the exact same tracklist and reinvents the sound and spirit. It's a novel approach and a refreshing way of thinking about new studio releases for a label. 'Dreaming You Backwards and 'I'm Sorry and I Love You' has more of a more baroque pop with lush string sounds embellishing the fraught emotional tension; 'Dreaming Of You Backwards' is similarly majestic with classical music references guiding it. Compare these takes with the previous record's soulful rock feel - close in some ways to the sound of Hiss Golden Messenger - and it becomes clear Adams has shed that sound completely and achieved a true reinvention.

De Todas Las FloresSony US
Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade shared her tenth album De Todas Las Flores in 2022, drawing influence from a variety of folk and Latin jazz genres including bolero, cumbia, bossa nova, samba and son jarocho. Her first project of completely original material in seven years, since her fifth studio record Hasta La Raiz, the album was produced by French-Mexican musician Adan Jodorowsky, Lafourcade's former neighbour and multi-talent in his own right. A rare case of a "musical diary" among Lafourcade's catalogue, the album was a bittersweet, romantic jaunt from the get-go, dealing in themes of grief both thematically and formally: it was recorded entirely on analog tape in an El Paso exurb, not far, yet still a comforting ways away, from her home municipality of Veracruz, Mexico.

Markus Guentner - Black Dahlia
CD + STICKER
CD
Black DahliaAffin Germany
Markus Guentner takes a deep dive into experimental soundscapes on this wonderful seven-track album for Affin. They find him venturing into new sonic territories while preserving his signature ambient textures on top of sleek rhythms and intertwined with haunting melodies and an eerie ethereal edge. These pieces show his knack for layering intricate electronic sound designs into slowly transformative worlds of widescreen and cinematic musical storytelling. It all adds up to a great place to get lost - sometimes in deep and dark introspection, sometimes with a more optimistic vibe.

Breakbeat Lou - Edits Volume 1
7"
Edits Volume 1Breakbeat Lou Edits US
To bear a name like Breakbeat Lou, you’d have to have earned it. And Louis Flores is indeed arch-digger numero uno: mainly having cut his teeth as a co-creator of the Ultimate Break And Beats compilations on New York’s Streetbeat Records, Lou was born anew as a DJ as way back as 1974 (!), amassing a boss pile of vinyl and thus music intel, largely as to where and how to source the best breakbeats out there. With elite producers like DJ Premier, Large Professor, The Bomb Squad, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre and Marley Marl all having sampled Lou’s wholesale procurements over the years, the man himself now steps back up to flaunt his very own pump-action breaks works. From KRS-One to Loose Ends, the samples on this are electric, and the original beats bombastic.

Big Town Boy Small City DreamsClutching At Straws
In case you've failed to notice, 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of Bronkski Beat's breakthrough hit, 'Smalltown Boy'. That has provided Bring Ring an excuse to reissue his superb 2018 cut, 'Big Town Boy, Small City Dreams' - complete with artwork that knowingly nods to the Bronski Beat record. His original mix, a female vocal-led affair in which moody analogue electronics, glistening guitar motifs and memorable synth sounds rise above a throbbing Hi-NRG bassline and Bronksi beats (sorry), appears in extended and edited forms, alongside a fresh rework from long-serving neo-Italo producer Bangkok Impact. His version is simply sublime, adding layers of expressive excess and trippy effects while subtly beefing up the groove and weaving elements of the vocal in and out of the mix. It sounds like an anthem in the making.

Hifi Sean / David Mcalmont - Twilight
CD
TwilightPlastique Recordings
Arriving almost exactly three months after its predecessor, HiFi Sean and David McAlmont's third collaborative full-length is lightly a conceptual flip side to 2024's Daylight - a "dusk till dawn" night drive sequel, as they put it. To provide a distinctly different sonic sheen to the album that preceded it, the duo has reached for slow, soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics, strobe-lit synths and musical motifs forged in darker, if still colourful, tones. Add in McAlmont's honeyed, effortlessly soulful vocals, and you have another genuine gem from the 1990s survivors. Highlights include Blessed Madonna collaboration 'The Comedown', the tactile bliss of 'Goodbye Drama Queen', the huggable wooziness of 'High With You' and the heartfelt sweep of 'Star'.

The Wombats - Oh! The Ocean
CD
Oh! The OceanThe Wombats
According to the band themselves, the Wombats' new full-length - the long-serving trio's sixth studio set in total - is their most "sophisticated and sonically adventurous yet", exploring lyrical themes of "socially awkwardness, internal strife and everyday LA life". It's certainly a musical departure, with the Liverpool-born band and producer John Congleton (best known for his work with St Vincent and Death Cab For Cutie) largely eschewing the synths and indie-dance influences of old in favour of a sound rooted in British "beat music" of the late 1960s, jangly 1980s indie-rock, and the Britpop era. It's a notable change in direction, but it works really well - as the bold, beautiful and undeniably catchy songs 'Can't Say No', 'Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want To Come' (a future anthem for socially anxious misfits everywhere in the same mould as Pulp's 'Mis-shapes') and the surprisingly funky 'Blood On The Hospital Floor'.
