The Conditioning Track (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: ASQ 001. Rel: 05 Sep 18
  1. The Conditioning Track (NYC mix) (5:45)
  2. The Conditioning Track (North London mix) (5:23)
Review: Jimmy Asquith is undoubtedly best known for being the man behind the ever-growing Lobster Theremin label, though he does have production pedigree following a string of releases under the Chicago Flotation Device and Tom Hang aliases. Here he uses his surname as a pseudonym for the first time, serving up a two-track missive that bristles with celebratory peak-time intent. The A-side "NYC Mix" of "The Conditioning Track" is a percussive, energy-packed treat, with sweaty vocal stabs rising above a deliciously heavy and distorted rhythm track and a mind-altering UK garage style bassline. The flipside "North London Mix" is similarly tough, albeit a little less percussively intense and more musically rich thanks to the addition of a classic deep house motif. Recommended.

  1. Check 4 U (3:52)
  2. Check 4 U (Metrodome UK Gee mix) (5:16)
Review: Seminal Manchester street soul from 96; Bovel's "Check 4 U" had anthem status in clubs and on pirates throughout the city at the time but suffered limited pressing and an OG copy has been known to be priced at 2000 quid. Revitalised by Ruf Dug and Bovel herself, it now comes complete with a superb UKG update from Metrodome which maintains the feel of the era but with the pace and punch of the times. Limited to 1000 copies.

  5. Floor Excitement VIP

  7. 1995
Review: The Busy Twist run a really interesting operation... Inspired by the UK's bass movement, the London-based producers have recorded extensively in their native Ghana, giving this a truly international tongue. A fine case in point is Drumtalk's remix of the brilliantly titled "Auntie Fatty": riddled with all manner of chopped up chants and percussion, there's a very familiar riff on the drop. "Floor Excitement" is another highlight; the vocals are reminiscent of a Wookie plate but delivered with heartwarming gusto. Technically this is an EP... But with such a bounty of tropical treats, this is almost album material.

  2. Ain't No Joke
  3. Interlewd
  4. Creepin'
  5. G Groove
  6. Tales From The West
  7. Yes We Do
Review: Having sprung into action with the Sol Explorer EP on Girasole, William Caycedo is back with a new selection of jams on the ever-developing SlapFunk. As the label's remit for minimal house and techno broadens, we're treated to low slung leftfield beats on "Booty Call" before the peppier broken beat groove of "Ain't No Joke". "Creepin'" and "G Groove" head into more familiar territory for SlapFunk fans, but there's still space for the crisp, laid back funk of "Tales From The West" and the off-kilter jazzy vibes of "Yes We Do" thrown in for good measure.

Cat: SNKRX 02. Rel: 23 Jul 19
  1. By My Side (4:33)
  2. Touch Me (edit) (5:07)
Review: The fragrant smell of coco pops hangs in the air as another cheeky two-step white label comes our way on Sneaker Social via a mysterious Chavinski from Holland. Once again he's picked two gems from two pretty disparate corners; side A gets all jazzy, light-footed and loopy as a Steffi banger from 2011 gets all UKG'd up, while the B side will drive you crazy all night long thanks to a Cathy Dennis flashback to 1990. Sweet like chocolate.

Review: Cape Town's CTS dive straight into a new year with the show-stopping "If You Want To". Rolling on an unhurried break with rich emotional textures, it pulls you into their world with a molten persistence that never sits still. Remix-wise Gacha Bakradze adds a little Balearic charm with maintaining the spirit of the original's liquid, perpetual groove development while Edmondson brings us back to the bruk with a broken beat, slightly UKG vibe. There's no ifs about it, you will want to.

The Chunky EP (limited heavyweight vinyl double 12")
Cat: SWAMP 022. Rel: 04 Sep 12
  1. Decca
  2. Experiment 727
  3. Thang
  4. Rugged
Review: The Mancunian tones of Swamp81's resident MC Chunky are well known to those who tune in to the label's Rinse FM show on a regular basis. However, this debut EP, forwent any kind of vocal showcase for the kind of hefty, refined fusion of garage and techno we've come to expect from Loefah's empire. Arriving as a 12" doublepack featuring four tracks, The Chunky EP shows Chunky to have the production chops to match his skills on the microphone, showcasing a wide range of influences channeled through a uniquely dark mood; "Decca" is a straight up piece of rolling deep house with a shadowy basement vibe, while "Experiment 727? recalls the syncopated techno of Bambounou or Boddika's leaden beats, while on the second 12?, "Thang" is a masterclass in stripped back garage mechanics, and "Rugged" provides a lo-fi beat that ploughs the darkest recesses of instrumental grime for inspiration.

Landscapes (12")
Cat: HDB 056. Rel: 06 Jan 12
  1. Landscapes (feat Simbad)
  2. It's Serious (feat Karizma)
Review: The promise of Cooly G's releases for Hyperdub et al turns into maddening anticipation as the first taste of her forthcoming album sneaks out months ahead of the game! First up it's "Landscapes", co-produced with Simbad, and utterly devastating in its use of simple elements for maximum effect. A broken beat ticks steadily away under glossy, undulating streams of pads while Cooly herself enchants with her Neneh Cherry style vocal delivery. "It's Serious" on the flipside sees Cooly linking up with certified house legend Karizma for a more chunky, beat-driven offering that will slay floors in the same way that Altered Natives' "Rass Out" did some years back.

  2. Ed The Spread - "The Bauhaus Movement" (7:13)
  3. Grant Nelson - "Move Close" (4:47)
  4. Rocket Dubz - "Dirty Bath" (5:09)
Review: You should know by now that Plastik People is the go-to spot for the most upfront garage house done in a classic style, and they're spelling it out good and proper with The Sound Of Garage House. Marc Cotterell leads the way with the jazzy vibes and deliciously liquid chords of "Those Days" before Ed The Spread brings a nagging shuffle and sharp string stabs to hard-stepping bumper "The Bauhaus Movement". Grant Nelson keeps things tuff with the natty piano hooks and diva slices of "Move Close" while Rocket Dubz ups the funk to 11 for hands in the air party starter "Dirty Bath".

  2. Dilemma (vocal original) (4:12)
  3. Dilemma (Garage mix) (5:16)
  4. Dilemma (Garage radio edit) (3:26)
Review: Following appearances on the interconnected Distant Hawaii and Lobster Theremin labels, DJ Sonikku (AKA British producer Tony Dowson) drops a mysterious, hand-stamped 12". It boasts contrasting versions of the previously unheard "Dilemma", a chiming and bouncy concoction that joins the dots between thrusting proto-house, Yellow Magic Orchestra and cheery '80s synth-pop. The latter influence is clearer on the 'Original Vocal' version, which makes great use of a relatively well-known acapella. On the flip, Dowson gives the track a radical overhaul, laying the ultra-positive original melodies over a sparse but weighty, two-step influenced groove. It's not garage in the traditional sense, and some may find it a little on the sickly-sweet side. There's no denying, though, that it sounds like a scene anthem in the making.

Ripgroove (Fixate remix) (1-sided 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FLAKE 045. Rel: 15 Jul 19
  1. Ripgroove (Fixate remix) (5:10)
Review: If ever there was a record that warranted a one-track single-sided pressing, it would be this one. The legend of this track harks back to the golden years of dubplate culture, when a track's infamy could be felt months before it dropped. Sherelle lay waste to the place when she dropped Fixate's utterly devilish bootleg of Double 99's timeless garage classic "Ripgroove," which artfully nudges the track back into the rudest jungle styles the original made such good use of. It had to get an official pressing, and who better than original label Ice Cream Records to do the business? This one is going to fly out, so don't hang around.

The Message EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPC 08. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. The Message
  2. Believe In Me
  3. Oh My Boy!
Review: Plastik People are unabashed about their love of UK garage, and they're at it once again with the pumped up swanging and banging of Ray Hurley. "The Message" even sports a charmingly British MC standing up for our right to party, freestyling over a hyped-up 4 x 4 beat and classic chord stabs. "Believe In Me" is a little housier but not at the expense of the garage heat that keeps this track bumping righteously. "Oh My Boy!" is the peak time belter on the record, keeping the stabs urgent and maximising on the Jamaican lilt of the MC to bring a ruffer end result to get the whole place shouting, "Oi!"

  1. Overthrow (7:10)
  2. Phased (6:13)
  3. Free Life (5:32)
Review: UK tech house hero Burnski has been serving up some serious heat of late under the Instinct alias, channelling that old school UK vibe of drum & bass, speed garage and 2-step. His exploration into these styles bring about this sixth instalment of his eponymous series with 3 cuts set to cause havoc on dancefloors this year. A side cut "Overthrow" rides on a slick tech house groove before moving into a swing-fuelled rhythm and razor-sharp sub-bass and it's business as usual. On the flip, shadowy stepper "Phased" fuses Artful Dodger's classic swagger with the dark sci-fi aesthetic of Ed Rush & Optical. Finally, put your lighters up for the furious junglist roller that is "Free Life".

  4. True (feat Angelina Lucero)
Review: After a series of self-released tracks and remixes on labels such as Fool's Gold and Guns In The Sun, Jerome LOL jumps over to Friends Of Friends with this stunning four track EP. Expressing his most expansive soundset, each one of these tracks shows a whole new side to him. "Always" sounds like Disclosure performed by a full live band with Sara Z's lyrics hitting spots very few house records ever can. "True", meanwhile, is a cosmic, navel gazing slice of black soul that wouldn't go amiss on a Trentemoller record. Elsewhere we're slapped into slo-mo shuffle submission by "Deleted" and pummelled by industrial strength rhythms on "Fool". An exceptional EP, don't buy this for the LULZ, buy it for the LOL.

Review: US Garage is alive and well thanks to the sterling work of Plastik People, although in this case they've turned their attention to the South Eastern hemisphere and the impeccable work of Australian producer Meraki Soul. The vocal chops, swinging drums and cheery melodic flourishes on Scott Diaz's dub mixes of "Damn Sure" on the A side doff their cap to Todd Edwards with pride, and you can hear the Defected regular's studio prowess coming through at every angle of the mix. The original however is the one to dig into if you want a smoother ride, with Meraki Soul conjuring up the kind of warm, soul-inflected sound that could suit such a wide range of situations.

Review: Plastik People are back with another volume of unmissable torch bearers for true-skool garage lovers to rejoice at. Things stride in bright and bold with "Mellow Mellow," which plays a dummy move with its trippy sound FX intro before ripping into a romping, sax-fuelled bumper courtesy of seasoned pro Sinan Mercenk. Templeton Peck takes things deeper on "Sweat Mix 2" - a forgotten gem from the golden age of 2-step. Meanwhile Uschi Classen makes things truly dreamy on the woozy but utterly funky "Take Me High," a seriously deep cut previously only available on white label.

  1. MMM - "MMM Meets Tshetsha Boys" (7:08)
  2. Old Apparatus - "Old Apparatus Meets Shangaan Electro" (4:00)
Review: Honest Jon's present the last twelve inch instalment of their impossibly varied Shangaan Shake remix project with the perma excellent MMM and Old Apparatus at the helm. Fiedel and Wiegand's take on the Tshetsha Boys is notable for two things: firstly it continues the duo's recent fascination with rhythms of a decidedly UK Funky nature (as executed with devastating effect on their recent Dex/Rio 12") and it further strengthens the impression Honest Jon's have given the commissioned artists a blank canvas to retain or toss as many elements of the source material as they deem fit. Thus recognisable snippets of the vocals remain alongside a brilliantly twisted treatment of the tinny melodics wrapped infinitely around butt slapping drum textures. Completely different in tone and execution, the elusive Old Apparatus invoke the spirit of Scratch Perry at his most intoxicatingly brilliant with a rusted, half stepping arrangement caked in all manner of feedback which serves to demonstrate how far reaching the project has been over the course of the 12" releases.

Rip N Run Vol 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DPR 028. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. We Go
  2. Zip It Up
  3. Smoking Circles
Review: While volume two of Dat Pressure's Rip N Run may have already hit the streets, now they're back-pedalling to volume one - OCD garage heads rejoice. As ever label boss Noodles is on hand with more essential wares from the vaults, this time enlisting the mighty Dub Child as a partner in crime. These jams veer towards the breakstep end of the garage spectrum, all boom bap drums and stuttered grooves, not least on the massive but spacious "We Go." "Zip It Up" packs in plenty of rootsy dub tones and soul vocal licks to match the skittering drums, and "Smoking Circles" gets into an almost techy strain of broken beat honed for serious dancefloor consumption. Just hold tight for the bass drop on that last one - it's a monster.

  3. Fractions (6:22)
Review: Carsten Aermes, aka Phon O, made a name for himself via the 50 Weapons label in more recent years, and it's now time for him deliver the goods for Ellen Allien's BPitch Control, one of Berlin's finest house and techno stables. "Run" is more energetic and upbeat compared to a lot of other BPitch releases, bringing through a soaring melodic groove and a high-powered techno rattle into the mix, whereas "Booklyn Shuffle" is a futuristic sort of jungle abstraction featuring a 4/4 beat down in its underbelly. The title track "Fractions" goes for a more house-centric approach, but Phon O still manages to retain his distinctiveness thanks to a jam-packed groove full of bass exploration and subtle jungle infusions.

Review: The first volume in the mysterious Phone Traxxx series sold out in record time following its release last autumn. We'd expect this sequel, which boasts four more dancefloor bangers inspired by the glory days of UK garage, to sell just as fast. The shadowy crew kicks things off via the dark garage vibes, heavy analogue bass and gut-punching breakbeats of "Frisky", before serving up some deep, dreamy and seductive two-step garage flavours on EP highlight "Xan Widdecombe". The two-step fun continues on the flipside, where the classic-sounding chords, bubbly synth stabs and cut-up vocal snippets of "Wallop" are followed by the dark, heavy and mind-altering shuffle of "Benson".

Review: London-based Michael Colvill has risen to considerable prominence within the South London musical community since 2015, after the self-released Midnight Moods mixtape, guest appearances on tracks by Glenn Astro and Jamie Isaacs and hosting a radio show on Balamii. As MC Pinty, his sound takes influence from the introspective poetry of The Streets, the twisted late-night moods of friend and collaborator King Krule and the jazz-inflected bounce of production partner Maxwell Owin. From the blunted urban blues of "Tropical Bleu", to his clever rhyming over sultry late night deep house on "Ceasors" or the jazzy drum 'n' bass of "Nightcrawler" (calling to mind the mid '90s flavour of legends like Alex Reece or Peshay) - City Limits is perfect to plug in to on one of those trips on the night bus back to Peckham.

Review: Sam Shackleton's "Deadman" was the surprise hit of his recent Fabric mix - a sought-after gem that took his particular take on techno and dubstep in a thrilling new direction. Now, it's finally available on vinyl, alongside an impressive King Midas Sound remix from Kevin Martin. "Deadman" itself is the one for club plays, an intoxicating fusion of conga-led percussion - influenced, one expects, by the tropical beats of UK funky's most forward-thinking practitioners - and his usual densely layered atmospherics. The King Midas Remix, meanwhile, offers a spaced-out, heavily ambient take that delights and confuses in equal measure.

Now Plastik People's new sublabel Rhythm People carries his first vinyl release, and he's stepped up with some surefire party starters. "Body Werk" is a bad ass swinger with a crafty bassline and all the right stabs and samples, while "Hands Together" gets into a more rolling peak time house flow. Mike Millrain drops a heavy remix of "Body Werk" that keeps the original ingredients intact and simply builds on them with subtle flourishes. Smokey Bubblin' B gets busy with "Hands Together," crafting a classic shuffling masterclass from the component parts.

Review: After four years spent contributing tracks to multi-artist EPs and digital download compilations, Casey Spillman has finally been given a chance to release a 12" all of his own. He's firmly grasped the opportunity with both hands, first offering up a bouncy, sub-heavy chunk of late night UK garage/deep house fusion ("Avec Moi", before effortlessly joining the dots between skittering tech-house and rumbling UKG on "Temperature". Over on Side B, Enzo Siragusa offers a deep, acid-flecked tech-house take on "Avec Moi" - all off-kilter electronics, earth-shaking bass and glitchy grooves - while Spillman delivers more bass-heavy, garage-influenced grooves and sun-kissed synths on atmospheric closing cut "Endure".

Review: After an essential hiatus, 12 Inches Deep returns with a brand new project. Introducing Hot Dime Recordings, house and garage based on a different set of metrics, UK Garage. The brainchild of 12ID label founder, Urbanite, and none other than UK Garage legend, Karl "Tuff Enuff" Brown, of Tuff Jam fame, Hot Dime Recordings launches an all new, US based - UK Garage platform, with 2TUF4U Vol. 1, a massive compilation hand selected from Karl's prolific vault of works and collaborations. Turn to the A side for a joint effort between Karl Brown, and fellow ledge, Jeremy Sylvester, as "Tuff Asylum;" with an original, and individual "HOT" mixes. Flip to the opposite side for another pair of special "HOT" mixes, this time of the Anthill Mob's "When I Think of You," followed by a swinging "DONK" mix from the unmistakable, DEM2, to round out the volume. One not to be missed.

LongFunk EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: REFIX 011. Rel: 05 Feb 18
  1. Can You (5:56)
  2. LongFunk (6:07)
  3. Do It For 'em (6:56)
  4. Stand It (5:26)
Review: Waxwing pops up on Re-Fix with a crafty, chopped up soulful house approach that will sit right with fans of Max Graef and Felix Lenferink. "Can You" is a summery jam with plenty of sliced and diced vocals and romantic sweeps of melody, while "LongFunk" gets a cheeky shuffle in the mix with splashy drum hits and nifty Rhodes stabs to get bodies popping uncontrollably. "Do It For 'Em" gets even twitchier in the edit, using all kinds of heavily funked up samples to create a killer groove. "Stand It" takes a more classic New Jersey approach without losing that instinct for crafty twirls and curls to spice the mix up.

69in EP (12")
Cat: EXT 002. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. 69in (5:01)
  2. Bakkup (7:58)
  3. Rising Early (7:15)
Review: Harry Wills and the EXT label are still largely residing in an unknown space, where we know very little and want to know very much. "69in" is an off-kilter house gem, weaving its way through funky, broken beat basslines and jungle-inspired drums that could easily have been a part of Four Hero's sets back in the early 00s. On the flip, "Bakkup" provides yet more glitchy house rhythms, bouncing up and down with the help of dusty percussion patterns and shady, complex sonic patterns from the depths of Wills' studio. More, please.

  7. Leee John - "Mighty Power Of Love" (Mood II Swing Vox mix) (8:18)
  8. Janet Rushmore - "Joy (Kaoz Gone Insane)" (6:44)
Review: You can always rely on Joey Negro when it comes to compiling the best of house, disco, soul.. anything really! And you can add this one to the list. Dave Lee presents a selection of classics that's up there alongside with The Soul of Disco compilations, Nite:life 08 and The Trip. Featuring some true classics such as the CJ Mackintosh remix of "Voices In My Mind" (complete with soaring vocals courtesy of India), Joe Clausell's classic "Ladbroke Grove" which is always a worthy addition (particularly when that absolutely mental piano roll rushes in) and there's plenty more. Legends such as Mateo & Matos, Mood II Swing and Ralphi Rosario all appear, even Joey Negro himself who turns in a sweet remix of Thelma Houston's "All of That".
