Artificial Sunsets (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WB 021 . Rel: 29 May 17
  1. Artificial Sunsets (5:56)
  2. The Pursuit Of Happiness (5:29)
Review: From his roots in the none stranger Brighton techno scene through to his recent re-emergence on Workshop and the like, Ibrahim Alfa has managed to stay resolutely unique despite dipping in and out of the music game over the years. Wicked Bass have turned back to his considerable catalogue of gems to give "Artificial Sunsets" a fresh outing, and highly deserved it is too. With its tightly wound, snaking beat, chirpy but off-kilter chords and loungey background licks, it's a track with a surreal atmosphere all of its own that begs to be played at the after party. "The Pursuit Of Happiness" meanwhile is a bold and brassy stomper with massive bass and enough noise to make the Landstrumm fans screw their faces up.

  1. Alienopolis (6:08)
  2. XOX 31 (5:35)
  3. Illusion (5:11)
Review: Man of many aliases Patrick Radomski has saved some of his best material for the Alien Rain series, which has been delivering bombastic blasts of acid-fired techno hedonism since 2012. "Alienopolis", the track that kicks off this sixth EP, is a suitably no-holds-barred romp through intense club techno territory, with genuinely mind-altering TB-303 motifs weaving in and out of a no-holds-barred rhythm track. Over on the B-side, he opts for a slightly deeper, darker and more intoxicating feel on psychedelic creep-out "XOX 31", before sharpening his acid lines further on the otherworldly hypnotism of "Illusion", where sampled vocal snippets help enhance the druggy mood.

  3. Glass Eye (6:43)
Review: From Bristol to Berlin, Skull Disco to R&S, dubstep to techno, Appleblim's constant evolution has always kept us excited and on our toes. Here he hits a new chapter with his brand new label Beatnik Boulevard, a place for even further, farer out fusions and considerations. This potentially Lord Of The Flies-referencing EP sets the scene and gives us high hopes for the future... Groaning drain bass and barbed synth bliss on "Conch Shell Motives", 23rd century b-boy funk on "Holistic Rider" and woozy, jazzy dub on "Glass Eye". Grab some real estate on Beatnik Boulevard while you can.

Review: This young DJ /producer is one of 2012's most promising new artists - take one listen to Water Jump and it's clear why he is so hyped. "Reception" uses a mutant, noisy take on Chicago house basslines to brutal effect, while "Drone Logic" also revisits the past to create a new vision for the future. There, heavy drums roll in and an old school progressive house bassline - one that sounds more Guerilla than Digweed - is chewed to pieces by bursts of electronic feedback. But it's "A Quiet Life" that really stands out. Underpinned by a splurging bass, haunting angelic voices breeze in as psychedelic drums that have little bearing to traditional house / techno structures explode through the speakers.

Phased (140g smokey transparent grey vinyl 12" (limited to 300 copies))
Cat: SSX 02. Rel: 29 May 17
  1. Magnetism (7:25)
  2. Abstraction (4:31)
  3. Fiction (5:30)
  4. Partial (5:25)
Review: Hypnus Records regular BLNDR makes the leap over to Silent Season as they continue to celebrate their expansive tenth anniversary with a series of unmissable 12"s. Dub techno is very much the order of the day on this grip of four tracks from the French producer, with shimmering chords and subterranean rhythms spelling out a perfect recipe for total meditation. "Abstraction" is a highlight with its thin slithers of sound ducking and diving between the erratic kicks while "Partial" drifts on a slow-creeping beat that gently buffets the vaporous chords downstream. With whispers of club compatibility tucked into the folds of these heavy-lidded tunes, there are many ways you could find yourself engaging with this 12".

  3. Raiders Of The Lost ARP - "Equinox" (7:00)
  4. Automatic Tasty - "I Can't Find My Own Manual (How Therefore Am I To Restore To My Factory Settings?)" (5:09)
Review: You can always rely on Dublin's Lunar Disko Records to provide the heat; this time it's in the form of some heavyweight electro vibes by the industry's best and brightest. But this is no surprise given the imprint's invariable doses of quality. First up is Dutch maestro DJ Overdose with "Arecibo", a comparatively more pensive and introspective electro appearance than his usual work, but TR One's "Escape From Enceladus" takes this pensive sway of synths and crystal-like sonics to an even deeper level. Raiders Of The Lost Arp kick off the flip side with the smooth and suave flow of "Equinox", this one belonging more to the house end of the spectrum, whereas Automatic Tasty comes through with a quirky little digi number with the aptly odd name of "I Can't Find My Own Manual (How Therefore Am I To Restore My Factory Settings?)". A tidy little blast of synth-filled goods.

Review: The third volume in the Sessions series brings together a trio of much loved producers for a series of untitled, all-star collaborations. Regular collaborators Dynamo Dreesden and SVN are joined by Dave '2562' Huismans under his now familiar A Made Up Sound alias. The studio threesome hits the ground running on the A-side workout, which sounds like an alien techno interpretation of 1990 British "bleep and bass" - all tipsy sub-bass, intoxicating bleeps and skewed TB-303 motifs. On the flip they pepper a snappy, pitched-down ghetto house groove with dreamy synthesizer flourishes ("Untitled 2"), before bathing in a bath of liquid hallucinogens on the rhythmic ambient weirdness of "Untitled 3".

  4. The Time Past (6:16)
Review: Jacob Long's work as Earthen Sea has already firmly established itself on Ital's Lovers Rock label, but here the San Francisco-based artist is branching out to a sympathetic ear - Silent Season. Much like other artists on the label, Long's fusion of heavy atmospherics and submerged techno make for a compelling, immersive listen. At times, such as on "The Sky Is A Sea Of Darkness", he opts for a looming set of pads and textures that bear down on the listener. Elsewhere, more delicate sounds interact across the frequency range, but what binds the record together is the weight of the ambience Long is so adept at crafting. Without a thread of a kick drum pulse to be heard throughout, it's another strong step on for Earthen Sea.

  3. Never Somewhere (6:11)
Review: Aside from his own Edit Select Records, Anthony MacKinnon aka Edit Select has been a big player in some very big labels like Prologue and Ostgut Ton throughout the years. The present Modularz has also been a core driver of the man's deep-minded techno frameworks, and this new EP feels like a return to form. Opening the skies is "The Drifter", a classic slice of headstrong techno spewing with bleeping atmospherics and propelled forwards by a sleek, tenebrous gust of ambience. On the flip, "Last Seen Leaving" heads deeper into the whirlpool thanks to a hypnotic groove, and "Never Somewhere" offers a much needed dose of acid to inject a little nerves into the equation. That's us enjoying ourselves in case you hadn't understood...

Review: Canadian label Silent Season continues its mission to marry modern electronic music processes with the ancient nature of the label's base on Vancouver Island, this time turning to Mosam Howieson to deliver a four track EP of ambient techno experimentation. The Melbourne-based artist has a unique approach that should appeal to lovers of heavyweight bass pressure and subtle, moody cinematics, not least on opening track "I". There's a submerged acid throb to "Ii", but only after time spent lingering in a beatless reverie. Loaded with surprises at every turn, this record has a lot of depth that should it rewarding faithful listeners for a long time to come.

Review: While some of you might jump to conclusions by categorising Kalbata as a newcomer, the veteran producer has, in reality, done it all and seen it all. He's been making wild and diverse electronic concoctions for over ten years, and his style is as unstable as his beats, which are largely undefinable and ever-shifting. This time, he's on the Fortuna label with some Middle-Eastern jams, and "Al Shark" is powered by a subtle techno undercurrent and gnarly sequence of digitised synth keys - all nice and distorted for added effect. Part 2 of the same tune leads into much more tribal territories, where the synth of side A are still looming in the background, amid an ocean of percussion and swamped atmospherics. TIP!

Review: This is Kito Kusunoki's debut on YOYAKUZA, yoyaku's new sub-label dedicated to talented Japanese artists. Four cuts of loopy, trippy and hypnotic tech house in the vein of Ikuto or Nami and overall is a worthy addition to the French imprint's family of esteemed artists which also features the likes of Roger Gerressen and Janeret. The Japanese artist has had a very productive year in 2017 thus far, with two EPs already on the parent label that have showcased his lean and trance inducing cuts which prove that this fledgling producer is one to watch for the foreseeable future.

Review: Like much related to Paris's Yoyaku Studio, the Manitou series launched late last year with no concrete info on the mystery artist behind it. Predictably, this follow-up comes from another anonymous producer. The A-side track reminds us of mid-'90s British tech-house rather than contemporary European productions, featuring as it does Motor City style spacey electronics over a chunky house groove. The bold kick-drums and snappy snares return on the deep, bass-heavy and woozy "Track 2", before our man or woman of mystery breaks up the beats and reaches for the crashing cymbals on fluid and tactile closer "Track 3".
