  8. Battle Break - "Battle Brawl" (vocals) (5:07)
Review: Belgian imprint PRR! PRR! Follows up some great releases by homeboy Maoupa Mazzochetti and DJ Coquelin with the Battle Break various artists compilation that shows off their new breed of recruits. Expect some nefariously rusty and dust coated lo-fi EBM mutations of the techno battle tools kind; sold already? Take for instance the explosive synth bass funk explosion of B-Ball Joints "Battle Joints 1", the early 90s rave referencing and absurd sample collage that is Bischepiehls' "Dancemix 2016" and Venderstrooik's "Tamahatu Appapa Lagos" which bears an uncanny resemblance at times to the afore mentioned Mazzochetti. Sadly he does not appear on this release but rest assured there's still more goodies: honourable mentions to Evil Grimace and their gabber mimicking and L.A.A.M.'s dusty house workout "Don't LOL".

Review: Dax J has been cultivating his brand of muscular European techno from the UK since 2006, and after a slew of EPs since 2011 on the jointly run EarToGround label, Dax J delivers his highest profile release yet. Entitled Dax J, Dj Deep welcomes the Londoner to his newly renamed Deeply Rooted imprint, with the Londoner providing four cuts of streamlined, hi-hat driven and dubby dancefloor techno designed solely for the club.

Cat: MTECH 001. Rel: 23 May 16
  1. Yamagic
  2. Moustache
  3. Insummer
  4. Slample
Review: The only way to improve on a label named as brilliantly as Moustache Records is to launch an offshoot called Moustache Techno. The Dutch imprint launches their new initiative in impressive style with four powerful techno cuts from the elusive and mysterious Gesloten Cirkel. "Yamagic" opens on an expansive experimental Detroit tip, with the rough percussive edges a nice contrast to the crisper jacking qualities that run through the guttural acid flex of "Moustache". Proceedings change up on the flip with the scratched industrial wooziness of "Insummer" brilliantly offset by a crunching half step kick. "Slample" closes proceedings on a decidedly odd note, sounding like Moodymann remixing Neucleus at the bottom of a well.

  1. Karen Gwyer - "Mom Did It On The Plane" (6:17)
  2. Raven Cru - "Peeches" (4:26)
  3. Dukwa - "Sixty Five" (6:08)
  4. Lily - "Empire Never Ended" (DBA version) (5:58)
Review: Don't Be Afraid's irregular split series returns with a veritable humdinger of a 12" featuring cuts from Karen Gwyer, Raven Cru, Dukwa and Lily. We are also happy to see some new Karen Gwyer material and the Ann Arbor native is on devilish form with the malfunctioning techno thrust of the superbly-titled "Mom Did It On The Plane". There is no clue as to the identity of Raven Cru, but this production unit switch up the mood brilliantly with the busted, bleep down of "Peeches" which sounds like jungle with the drums removed. Herva's mate Dukwa breaks his DBA duck in fine style with the unpredictable raw house twists of "Sixty Five" leaving No Corner murkist Lily to end the 12" on a high with the delicious electronic abstraction of "Empire Never Ended (DBA version)."

  1. Nothing Is Free (5:14)
  2. Nothing Is Free (Surgeon remix) (5:32)
  3. Kontorted (4:10)
Review: Downwards boss Regis surely does keep us on our toes still after all these years. After laying low for a while, he has got the label back in full swing after unleashing a monster EP by Simon Shreeve. This time he now presents new material by maverick producer and UK legend Justin Broderick under the JK Flesh moniker. The brooding grindcore dub of "Nothing Is Free" will be right up any Downwards loyalists alley, as will the snarling audio assault of "Kontorted" which slithers around walls of hiss, feedback and guttural low end brutalism. Surgeon's remix of "Nothing Is Free" blows the doors off in pretty spectacular fashion as always, exploiting the raw voltage of his famed modular setup brilliantly.

Concierge (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: CBS 021. Rel: 23 May 16
  1. Concierge (6:15)
  2. Woodwork (4:59)
Review: Rohan Walder clocks in for this third Randomer outing on Clone's Basement Series in as many years, with Concierge arriving as the Londoner's first 12" transmission of 2016. The template is pretty much laid down now for the Basement series and there is always some real gratifying techno to be found from those who step up to contribute. Title cut "Concierge" finds Walder's well-documented talent for crafting unique drum patterns really come to the fore on a dramatic, meaty production and sits well next to the more bugged out B-side. "Woodwork" is, in a word, trippy, leading out like Felix Da Housecat's "Kickdrum" before veering off down a wormhole of crazed percussive notes and mangled samples that gets increasingly crazier as it progresses - we really need to hear this one on a big system wow.

  3. Savior As The False (6:05)
  4. Seven (5:07)
Review: A quick glance at the cover art for Parrish Smith's first outing on Knekelhuis should be all you need to accurately guess the record's musical contents. That image - all fragmented, collage style strips and pitch-black segments - offers a neat visual metaphor for the producer's clandestine machine music. Fuzzy, distorted, stylized and in-your-face, all four tracks sit somewhere between the dystopian techno assaults of Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S label, and the industrial/EBM sounds of the '80s. This formula is at its' most potent on clanking opener "Stillness & Secrecy", but is also used impressively on "Supra", where snaking, Middle Eastern melodies drift across a dense, post-apocalyptic backdrop.

  3. X000 (0:21)

  5. Westward (5:21)
  6. X001 (0:17)
Review: Stenny has been one of Ilian Tape's most reliable and prolific artists over the last few years. Consume IV marks his fifth appearance of the Zenker brothers' imprint, and sees him joining the dots between hardcore-era breakbeat house, techno and UK garage. Opener "Lights On" brilliantly fuses together loose rave breaks and spacey deep house chords, while "Consumer's Tool" is a bumpin' garage roller complete with skipping New Jersey beats and bass-heavy British attitude. Stenny heads back towards standard techno territory on the heavy and hypnotic "Scanner", before breaking up the beats once more on the bruk-goes-to-Detroit-via-Sheffield loveliness of "Westward".
