Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.

Cat: CV 001. Rel: 23 Jan 17
  1. My Mental Madness (6:30)
  2. Chromoscope (6:34)
  3. Megallanic Cloud (6:58)
Review: Italian in Berlin Saverio Celestri returns with more minimal electro that has seen him receive many accolades of late with releases on labels such as Slow Life and Batti Batti. "My Mantal Madenss" sees him work the signature boom and snap of an 808 beneath the metallic bleeps of FM synthesis and gloomy analogue pads. "Chromoscope" goes for something more fierce and breakneck, utilizing the same elements of the previous track into something more lively and reminiscent of early Dopplereffekt or Ultradyne. With that in mind, the final track on the flip entitled "Megallanic Cloud" continues on with some early Detroit aesthetics as well, channeling the spirit of early Model 500 rather impressively.

Cat: SCS 06. Rel: 23 Jan 17
  1. Dark Spring (7:13)
  2. Goblin Cleaver (6:58)
  3. When Titans Fall (5:40)
Review: Secret Studio Records sixth offering (SCS06) features the Circling Vultures, a hardware driven project fronted by Chicago natives Justin Long (Hugo Ball) and Ken Zawacki (Dar Embarks). On Dark Spring EP, the title track sounds like an early Regis track on Downwards that's being played on the wrong speed, while "Goblin Cleaver" goes for the same kind of rusty acid jack that homeboy Hieroglyphic Being does. B side cut "When Titans Fall" is a dirty, slow grinding thriller full of clattering vintage drum machine rhythms and and the raw pulsating energy of pawn shop synths. Secret Studio Records, is a blue collar DIY label and production team based out of California's Bay Area with deep roots to Chicago. They've established a strong acidic catalog centered around hard-hitting jack tracks and lo-fi techno with raw aesthetics. The label features co-productions with D'Marc Cantu, D-Wynn and Jason Kendig (Honey Soundsystem), while also releasing EPs by fringe/upcoming artists. Secret Studio Records is a vinyl only label at heart, focused on short runs of 200-400 copies, hand-stamped and numbered with limited distribution.

  1. Put On Your Red Shoes & Trance (9:21)
  2. Just Jackin Around Man (8:55)
Review: Given his near two-decade quest to create minimalist dance music shot through with the warm weight of dub, you'd expect this EP from Scott 'Deadbeat' Monteith to hit the spot. It does, of course, though it's noticeably bolder and more 'in-your-face' than much of his output. While A-side "Put On Your Red Shoes & Trance" is typically hypnotic and stretched-out, it's power comes from Monleith's manipulation of raw, Plastikman style acid lines. Flipside "Just Jackin Around Man" pushes the producer's banging percussion to the fore, with subtle cymbal hits, occasional drum fills and quirky vocal samples combining brilliantly with a simple synth riff.

  3. Opportunity Rover (8:09)
Review: This year, Shlomi Aber's Be As One label celebrates its tenth birthday. We'll have to see what the imprint has in store by way of celebrations. For now, they continue to churn out the dancefloor hits, beginning with a heavyweight techno three-tracker from little-known Italian outfit JAM. Both A-side cuts, "Hermes" and "Pegasi", are peak-time box jams, built around stomping rhythm tracks, sweaty drum fills, and subtle synth loops that slowly mutate as each cut progresses. The real killer, though, is flipside "Opportunity Rover", a wild and psychedelic dancefloor assault based around the twin attractions of intense TB-303 acid lines and weighty, speaker-bothering drums.

Cat: MOSAICRED 04 . Rel: 23 Jan 17
  1. A Track Called Jinx
  2. The Bottom Line
  3. Pressure Dub
Review: Following rock solid entries from Ben Sims, Markus Suckut and Alan Fitzpatrick, Mosaic's Red Series continues apace in 2017 with a firing three-tracker from German scene stalwart Andre Kronert. "A Track Called Jinx" is a slow and nervy slice of bleepy techno that says a lot with the barest of ingredients. "The Bottom Line" is a more feisty concern, raising the tempo and the intensity without losing that loopy quality that shoots straight into the dark heart of the night. "Pressure Dub" represents the more experimental side of Kronert's output, using sparse materials to create a minimalist megalith.

Review: Following the release of his acclaimed debut album, In Waves, on ESP Institute, Lord of the Isles man Neil McDonald returns home to Firecracker Recordings. With six tracks to choose from, Parabolas of Neon is almost a mini-album. It boasts a quartet of sublime, mind-soothing ambient cuts, topped and tailed by two more rhythmic moments. Opener "Sunrise 89", a shameless dose of nostalgia built around heavy, bleep techno style sub bass and electronic motifs, offers a perfect balance between dancefloor heaviness and dreamy, saucer-eyed intent. Then there's the small matter of the title track, which is the kind of ultra-deep, ultra-dreamy chugger that you just want to hug at six in the morning.

Review: Amsterdam's Magnesii has literally sprung out of the shadows over the last few years and, although he (or she?) has preferred to keep the releasing schedule rather sparse, everything that's been released has been of outstanding quality. The producer's last two releases were Rush-House only specials, which made us somewhat jealous, but thankfully we've been well-stocked with this new EP for Raw Tools. "Fata Oasa" is a deliciously rolling house number, gilled with wonder and mystique, whereas "Building Ultrabot" takes a more mechanical, techno-ridden stance. "Euphoric 660" is a dirty, analogue house chugger with a toasty wave of synths spewing out from all angles, transformed and twisted into oblivion thanks to Antenna's remix. Classy tools.

Review: Swedish techno megalith Drumcode has decided to breathe new life into the back catalogue of veteran New York producer Moby. This 12" is the first of four due in coming weeks, all of which boast fresh interpretations of classic tracks. On the A-side, Luca Angelli offers his take on "Porcelain", combining Moby's evocative chord progressions and twinkling pianos with banging new techno drums and stabbing electronics. Dutch DJ Bart Skills handles the B-side, offering a rolling, atmospheric version of "Go" that makes the most of Moby's stretched-out chords (themselves famously sampled from the Twin Peaks soundtrack).

  4. Nomenklatura (5:26)
Review: Most probably missed out on Pan Daijing's 2015 debut, a limited-edition cassette filled with industrial-inspired techno improvisations. This 12" for Bedouin Records is the Berlin-based Chinese artist's first appearance on wax, and contains a quartet of intense and distorted workouts. Some will hear nods to classic Chicagoan acid and EBM in the thrusting industrial techno of "Tenderloin Tanz", while the moody, synth-laden throb of "Exile" recalls some of Cabaret Voltaire's most memorable moments. Flip for the spooky EBM of "A Season In Hell", where ghostly melody lines and aggressive stabs prod away at the senses, and the Nine Inch Nails style audio anger of "Nomenklatura".

Review: Ozelot's appearance on our charts has taken us by surprise but, if this is the sort of quality that we'll expect to see from them going forwards, then we have absolutely nothing but high expectations. Even the artwork is something to be pleased with. Drumpoet Community's Manuel Fischer is joined by newcomer Prioleau, and the latter opens up the 12" with the deep, bubbling house waves of "My Friend Is A Wonder", followed by the chuggy, beat-heavy flex of "Noonenose". On the B-side, Fischer adds a flurry of jazzy samples to the dark, almost ominous groove of "OZED030", leaving "Satripa" to deliver the techno swing.

Review: It really is moments like this where devoted fans of the techno sound witness a proud moment in the genre's evolution. The legendary Kevin Saunderosn returns with yet another dancefloor bomb with "Into The Future" featuring all the hallmarks of his sound which have never become tired: emotive chords, the 'Reese' bassline and tough beats that represent one of the best examples of what his fellow crusader Derrick May would describe as 'hi-tech soul'. On the flip, it's over to his son Dantiez Saunderson: who by now has followed in his father's footsteps and become a successful deejay and producer in his own right. His remix of the track goes for something more rough and dirty yet retaining all that undeniably Motor City feel throughout.

Review: German house enigma, STL, usually sticks to his own Something imprint when venturing out of his studio. In fact, he's only really collaborated with relatively high profile labels like Perlon and Smallville Records in the past, so seeing him launch the new Boogie Box imprint is quite the treat. He's in an eerie, pensive mood for the opening "Hide & Seek", blasting out his signature percussive roll, while "Haze & Kraze" places a heavier stomp onto the groove, and delivers a classic, hazed-out STL bomb for the darker, deeper ends of the set...
