Review: Peder Mannerfelt's Produktion label comes correct once more, ushering in the debut vinyl release from Russian artist Machine Woman, the six track For Sweden 12". The production alias of Leningrad-born and Berlin-based Anastasia Vtorova, Machine Woman aligns with Mannerfelt after first making her name on some 2014 tapes - check her Pink Silk effort for Tesla Tapes if you want to delve backwards into her sound. For Sweden is described as "waltzing the line between techno and the avant-garde' which seems like a fairly accurate summation with the tracks swinging between gravelly rhythmic cuts the more adventurous DJs will play in the club and glitchy experimentalism that will appeal to fans of the Pan Sonic school of sound. A most impressive record from Ms Vtorova!

Personalmote (limited 7")
Cat: FOLKDISK 001. Rel: 16 Nov 15
  1. Personalmote (4:04)
  2. Efter Stangning (4:57)
Review: Anton Klint first came to our attention thanks to a handful of EP's that he dropped on Munich's Public Possession label, but while we were already big fans of the imprint's work, it was Klint's singular take on house and disco that attracted us. This latest two-tracker comes via Sweden's IDEAL label, and the producer offers something a little darker and more experimental compared to his previous escapades. "Personalmote" is a fuzzy, broken tune that verges on house but never quite fully rids itself of a tribal, stepping kind of vibe. On the other hand, "Efter Stangning" churns and drives away at a more classic deep house level, but Klint nevertheless injects a noticeable layer of something altogether more exotic. Twisted, dystopian house beats would be the best way to some this up.

  3. Attis (6:59)
  4. Attis (Claudio PRC remix) (6:09)
Review: Since first surfacing on Hypnus Records back in 2014, Luigi Tozzi has put out a lot of material. Impressively, this is the Italian producer's eighth E.P in the space of 24 months. Musically, both "Meftie" and "Attis" are formidably dancefloor-focused, though that's where the comparisons end. The former is bleak and paranoid, with restless electronic motifs and ghostly chords riding a dense, tribal-influenced techno groove. "Attis", on the other hand, is a little more mournful and quietly melodious, with greater influence from dub techno. Both tracks get the remix treatment, too. The Gods Planet introduce an acid line to "Meftie" to give the track even greater intensity, while Claudio PRC opts for an icier, dub techno interpretation of "Attis".

  3. Friend Unfriend (5:48)
Review: Mystery artist This Other Space first popped up on Tasteful Nudes earlier this year with malicious little house EP named Eye Of The Cosmic, and the enigmatic artist is back on the Argot sub-label with another blend of dreamy house music. "Eye Of The Cosmic" is all about the sci-fi low-end, a bass tone that would make the Chicago boys proud, while the flipside sees the stuttering drum rolls of "Pop Yard" mash up with an '80s kind of vibe, and the tribal wails of "Friend Unfriend", a house tune that contains something distinctly British about it. Check 'em!

  1. Eastern Renaissance - "42A 19' 53 N"
  2. Mike Parker - "Night Of 21 Hours"
  3. Echologist - "Burn Permit"
  4. Stanislav Tolkachev - "The Right Side Of Hell"
Review: Though largely a platform for full artist releases, Mike Parker's Geophone label does dabble in the occasional various artist release and the last one (GPH19) really set the bar high with contributions from Voices From The Lake, Stanislav Tolkachev and that sensational Shifted remix of Parker. For this latest issue, Tolkachev is invited back to the label and he provides a chaotic "The Right Side Of Hell" which sounds like X-101 gone wrong (in a good way), while Eastern Renaissance's "42A 19' 53 N" is like hearing Warp's LFO mixed together with Prologue techno. Echologist, aka Brandon Moeller, provides a beat down and pulsating "Burn Permit" - and as you'd expect, Mike Parker throws down some deep and throbbing modulations on "Night Of 21 Hours".

Review: The second volume of Bushwick Is Melting features original unreleased material by Brooklyn-based producers Black Meteoric Star, Lorna Dune, and J. Slusher. Gavin Russom apparently has a new Black Meteoric Start LP on the way and we can't wait based on the epic, sweeping grandness that is the 18 minute A-side hogger "Unearthed Arcana" which is quite hypnotic when in full flight. The B-side finds Lorna Dune putting her experiments with the piano to one side to focus on some celestial house moves with "Reflux" which will appeal to fans of Legowelt's more star gazing moments whilst the wonderfully named J. Slusher closes out the record with the face melting techno cut "Night Train".

Review: Bushwick venue Bossa Nova Civic Club is one of Brooklyn's more recent additions, yet has become a focal point for some of NYC's key figures with events featuring representatives from L.I.E.S. and The Bunker complementing guests like Jacques Renault and Anthony Naples. Emboldened by this prospering creative vibe, Bossa Nova Civic Club have teamed up with Sisterjam, a local consultation, management and event promotion collective for a series of 12" EPs under the banner Bushwick Is Melting. This first volume features four tracks from Brooklyn-based producers, each reflecting a different side to the area's musical underground. L.I.E.S. artist Marcos Cabral contributes, as does his Runaway partner Jacques Renault who teams up with NYC techno veteran Mark Verbos, whilst there is also music from Mannequin Records act Dusk, and Aurora Halal, the person behind the Mutual Dreaming parties who makes her solo production debut with "Hazy G".

Review: Moopie's A Colourful Storm label launched earlier this year as an extension of the popular online platform that has hosted a rich and diverse stream of mixes from the likes of Imaginary Softwoods, DJ Nobu, Frak and Rabih Beaini to name a few. Pro-tip: do check that latter live mix from the Morphine boss! It was the archival sounds of Denial and their lost Oz classic cover of "California Dreaming" that heralded the arrival of A Colourful Storm, but this second release on the label switches the focus to more contemporary fare. Power Relations is a two track 12" of bad-mannered, f*cked up club trax from Melbourne's Nerve. The stomping, nocturnal techno of the title track is backed with a Photek-meets-Sunn O))) terror stepper entitled "Heads & Ordinary Concrete". For fans of Regis, Emptyset and Blackest Ever Black.

Review: The Don't Resist The Beat mainman is back with his first full length under his Milton Bradley alias, which reboots the label after a four year hiatus. The Berlin native (known as Patrick Radomski to his Mum) has recently released on his other imprint Alien Rain and Henning Baer's K209 and Tragedy Of Truth stays on the same path of direct (yet cerebral) dancefloor oriented techno, as well as some experimental and ambient excursions too. Highlights include the reductionist acid madness of "Spiral Of Silence", the glacial and textured dub techno of "Poisoned By Sweet Things" and the tunnelling and hypnotic pre-peak time builder "Law Of Attraction".

Review: Previously released on Prologue back in 2010, this three-track EP shows that Bradley stands out from all of the pseudo-gloomy dark techno that has been pedalled in recent years. "Interdimensional Entity" is an abstract, stepping affair with spacious pads and whooshing filters pushing in opposite directions. "Somewhere Beyond My Illusion" ventures farther into outer space - the release's original title was The Unheard Voice From Outer Space - with heart beat bass throbs accompanying the atmospheric textures. Best of all though is the title track, where the German producer lays down static interference and voices from another era over a pulsing, bleep techno rhythm.

Review: Fresh from releasing Mika Vainio's Mannerlaatta OST, Joachim Nordwall's peerless iDEAL Recordings coax a new album out of Nadine and Tanya Byrne's Ectoplasm Girls project. First surfacing with the Forever Nothing tape back in 2008, the Byrne sisters were unfairly lumped in with the 'Witch house' crowd and have since kept the Ectoplasm Girls project away from the recorded format and instead developed it in a live setting. This appearance on iDEAL is something of a welcome surprise then and New Feeling Come suggests the sisters have been stealthily expanding on their sound to a most satisfying degree. Distilling elements of techno, ambient, pop and drone into a wholly enveloping ten tracks, New Feeling Come is one of those albums whose mysterious delights is further revealed with each listen.

Review: The third instalment of Braiden's Off Out label arrives via Chunyin, a new dancefloor orientated project by Hong Kong born, Sydney based artist, singer and producer Rainbow Chan. Early support from Benji B, Eclair Fifi, Bill Kouligas, Joy Orbison amongst others.

The lead track of this release, "Fei", was the genesis of this project, created as she started to explore the world of murky dancefloor music. The track delivers a raw, punky attitude with a nod to minimal wave, littered with warped organic sounds and samples of Hong Kong new wave cinema.

Following this is "Emporium", a relentless jacking dancefloor number, syncopated groove laden drums married with airy atmospherics. "Shi" closes this EP with a unique and brooding techno inspired track that rolls yet feels as though it's perpetually falling apart at the seams.

Vinyl comes with screenprinted and Chinese seal hand-stamped artwork designed by Braiden, illustrated by Chunyin

Review: With their debut LP Exo, Gatekeeper continue their endeavors to be viewed as "an immersive audiovisual experience" as opposed to a mere band. Much like Giza, their EP for Merok, was accompanied by a VHS tape of music videos rendered in 3D, the ostensible album format of Exo is part of a wider concept, with a purpose -built video game environment to accompany the music, with a different level for each track. Album opener "Imax" is aptly titled as the plush sound design whooshes around you like a quintessential pre-movie indent, begging to be flung across the room on a 5.1 surround sound system. From this brief intro Gatekeeper take you on a fast-paced romp through all manner of bold electronic styles. Still, that underlying nausea that comes from such a rush of information to your ears has an addictive quality that begs for high volume immersion.
Whether this album stands strong independently of the video game analogies is debatable. The context is needed to justify the production pec-flexing, and does anchor the bombast of this kind of electronica.
