Earn (12" + insert)
Cat: FUCKPUNK 009. Rel: 27 Jun 16
  1. Earn (7:42)
  2. The Corridor (4:17)
Review: Giant Swan's previous outing, an eponymous debut EP on Howling Owl Records, explored the world of "rhythmic noise". Intriguingly, this Earn 12" for Vessel and Ossia's FuckPunk label is an altogether different beast, with the experimental duo charging towards the dancefloor in a surprisingly accessible way. The title track is particularly impressive, with metallic electronics, bouncy synth-bass and throbbing beats combining to create a thrill-a-minute ride through EBM and industrial funk. Flipside "Corridor" has no such fun-time aspirations, and instead serves up a horror-inspired soundscape of apocalyptic electronics and end-of-days textures. It's a fine track, of course, but lacks the energetic thrills of its' dancefloor-focused A-side.

Review: Farr is the fourth and final member of the Onnset label owners to release on the imprint - but judging on Position, it was certainly worth the wait. A large part of the UK producer's appeal is down to the fact that he doesn't sound like most of his peers; "Imposition" shows that this is the case with its droning guitars and stepping beats, while Farr's love of break beats is also audible on "Disposition", where more robotic breaks are fused with chilling synths. He also makes a compelling case for Reese bass-centred techno on the storming, siren-laded "Exposition" and the rolling, ominous "Opposition".

  1. Sneak Attack (10:14)
  2. Random Acts Of Insanity (8:19)
Review: Amid whispers of a new album from Unirhythm boss and Three Chairs stalwart Marcellus Pittman, two tracks from his excellent debut LP Pieces finally get committed to wax. It's a shame Pieces never got a vinyl release, but the chance to grip "Sneak Attack" and "Random Acts Of Insanity" on 12" should not be passed up. This 12" was actually released in 'blink and you'll miss it' white label format in 2014, but finally gets a proper issue! For those that don't have the LP, "Sneak Attack" is a curious concoction, with Syclops style electronics occasionally flowering over deep, dusty, intricately programmed rhythms. "Random Acts Of Insanity" feels a little bolder in approach, though its' rich chords and odd, off-kilter rhythm track are contrasted with some notably bonkers electronic touches.

  3. Das Ding - "Divebomb" (6:24)
  4. Safe Swim - "Pictures Of Skies" (3:40)
  5. Bronze Teeth - "Easygroove" (4:30)
Review: The Rubber label may proudly hail from the iconic Lowlands area known as Den Haag, yet their sphere of influence clearly stretches much further. The debut edition of their World Of Rubber series featured a rare production from Mannequin boss Ale Adriani, whilst this freshly issued second volume canvasses contributions from the UK and Belgium. First up is secret Amsterdam weapon Robert Bergman, laying down some deviant acid box action in the shape of "Broadcast From Ceres" which dovetails nicely with the more psychedelic overtones of "Masquerading As Stars" from Brussels-based duo Tav Exotic. The master Das Ding opens the B-side with the subaqueous "Divebomb" whilst the unheralded Safe Swim plunges into the deep end of experimentation on "Pictures Of Skies". It's left to Diagonal pair Bronze Teeth to wrap up matters with the rip snorting squat party techno of "Easygroove" which was clearly produced with The Hague in mind.

  4. Neo Life (TRP dub) (7:58)
Review: The shady, provocative artist who goes by the name of 99Letters is back with a selection of mesmerising techno-not-techno tracks for the young and audacious Dalmata Daniel label. As with the rest of this producer's music, these jittery, improvisational outsider tunes have got the sound of the cassette hiss very much at the forefront of the mix, and you can almost hear the cogs of those reel-to-reels turning gloriously. "Neo Life" is a pallid, dreamy stratosphere of beats and pads, but the lead tune "Untold Future" is where we really begin to hear 99Letters' style, that dubby, hazy kind of techno that travels on the borders of dance music and electronica. "Cooper" is similarly washed-out, except that here the beat arrangement has got more in common with electro than tech, while "Neo Life (TRP dub)" is a solid, acid-ridden squelcher with a magnificent layer of distortion and analogue funk.

Review: Hoya Hoya's resurgent label arm continues to impress, following that excellent 12" from the man JTC with a three tracker of optimum quality from one of the UK's most undervalued talents; Altered Natives. Amusingly entitled The Beastly Ghastly, this 12" is a glowing example of why more people need to know about Danny Yorke. Apparently the decision to sign up Mr Natives came after he completely destroyed the Hoya Hoya dancefloor with the unabashed slab of rudeness that is the title track a few months back - good work HH and good work AN! On the flip, you get a more considered side to Altered Natives on two brilliantly named tracks in "The Flattery Of Stalkers" and "Once Bitten Twice Removed" with the freeform stutter of the latter particularly memorable.

  6. B(eh)anger (12z remix) (6:00)
Review: Rotterdam's DJ Overdose inaugurates new Budapest label Dalmata Daniel with some dark and twisted Drexciyan/Ectomorphian electro nodes. He gets straight down to business on the thumping speaker attack that is "Path To Wrath". There's that dark electro sound so reminiscent of The Bunker heard on "That's Right" complete with jacking vocals. Fellow Hungarian S Olbricht gets on board for a remix of "Path To Wrath" which is some seriously sub aquatic 4/4 electro that works rather well. You'd be forgiven for thinking that "05 Poly 800 Loop" is a locked groove, it's not! But it certainly is a killer DJ tool in the vein of classic Aux 88 Detroit electro. Final track "B(eh)anger (12z remix)" is the kind of gothic electro that people like Visonia and Beta Evers would be in awe of.

Review: Five months on from the release of double A-side single Oblic/Serpenti - described by Juno reviewers as "the weirdest piece of dancefloor techno we've heard in a while" - Cosmic TRG has decided to get the tracks remixed. Lucy handles the decidedly skewed and out-there "Serpenti", incorporating many of the Romanian producer's unusual elements whilst re-formatting it for less experimental techno dancefloors (in other words, it's got a crusty but rock solid 4/4 beat pattern). In contrast, Minor Science's flipside remix of "Oblic" re-casts the original as a punchy, stargazing chunk of electro-techno fusion. While there's plenty going on in the mix, it's the rhythmic intensity of the drum patterns that shines through.

Review: Haunting and driving techno delight with a house touch for late night movement, from Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour aka STEREOGAMOUS. Two masters of saunatechno, two icons of Australian music, two friends that make magic together on the reg. Remixers of LCD Soundsystem, Kylie Minogue and The Presets. Paul is an ARIA Award winning legend, from his ITCH-E & SCRATCH-E project to his work with Silverchair and beyond. Jonny aka Seymour Butz is half of homodisco ravesupreme KOOKY, a renowned hug enthusiast and one of Australia's most revered soundtrack curators. Together they are a supreme duo whose musical taste is beyond redoubt. Deejays par excellence, musicians who push the boundaries, this EP is the sound of a summer in love in Berlin and thought over in a Sydney winter. Pressed exclusively on 100 180g vinyl records only. Review: Last year Jose Rico surfaced on Semantica, which for emerging producers is one of the best stamps of approval you can have. His first release since then is this London Calling EP which inaugurates the Shubaka label, newly launched operation whose inspiration seems to combine Star Wars' Chubaka with classical composers the artwork is any reference. "Afofaifa" is a challenging listen and one for the freaks at the end of a long club night (if they can handle it), while "Supernova" is deep and lo-fi. "No Name No Dub" flirts with dub techno and dusty house music as does "12bits" but without the woozy dub elements.

The label was founded in 2006 and has dealt in slick house-techno hybrids ever since, releasing music from all over the globe but with a particular attention to homegrown artists such as Donor. Against All is an ice-cold journey into stepping techno, showcasing tracks which are gelled together by sleek layers of drone and hard ambience. If you're a fan of anything on Sandwell District, Downwards, Avian, Our Circula Sound or any other techno label specialising in cold atmospherics then this LP is for you.

Review: Having previously surfaced on the Filtered compilation for Bleep, John Flynn's Spaces project returns with more intricate and playful electronica for the Warp subsidiary that more solidly establishes him as an artist of note for anyone who enjoys a good glitch-out. "Apologies" works rapid fire fragments and occasional sweeps of big bass into a tricksy time signature arrangement, while "Outside In" takes a slightly more measured approach to crafty electro. "Lever" too works catchy elements into a slick and addictive funk, with plenty of interference to keep things out in leftfield, before "In Wait" rounds things off with a more twitchy affair bolstered by looping piano fragments and interesting atmospheric disturbances.

Review: Pedro Vian's Modern Obscure Music has become an intriguing addition to the cluster of electronic music labels operating out of Barcelona, with a quite distinctive debut release last year followed by some low key cross format releases. This all suggests a certain improvised, feeling their way, approach to the label, augmented by their championing of local talent. A fourth release finds the label return to the 12" format and introduce a real unknown talent in the shape of Studio 3. Aside from stating some of the aged machinery made to produce the two "Unknown Jams" here, little clue is given as to Studio 3's identity but there's a real crunch and intensity to them that has you pulling the needle back to listen again and again. Lovers Rock man Ital offers some noted contrast with a wisely titled Catatonic Fumes rework of "Unknown Jam 1" which replaces the searing mechanical sensation with glistening charm.

Review: There's much to admire about this debut EP from Modern Obscure, the new label from sometime Hivern Discs contributor Pettre (here recording under the similarly fresh Pedro Vian alias). There's the loose, dreamy melancholy of Pettre's new age tinged deep house original, and a typically brutal, all-out acid assault from Jamal Moss, whose The Hieroglyphic Being Experience II rework is akin to being brutally smashed round the chops with a lead-clad 303. Best of all, though, is Madteo's No hay Nada En El Futuro Remix (literal translation: "there is nothing in the future"), which winds its way through three distinct, heart-aching movements across 15 spellbinding minutes.

Review: Sheffield's Tommy Vicari Jr has been releasing since around 2004, but in the last couple of years has really hit his stride. Just this year in fact he's already has nine releases and it's only June for goodness sake! Despite his significant output he's still pursuing quality, rest assured, as the NWL004 EP certainly proves. Starting out with the deep, sexy and slinky groove of "BCWUAF" which sounds like late nineties Parisian deep house by D'Julz or Jerome Pacman, he's then into some fierce and stomping techno with "MORPT", a cyclical and functional DJ tool for serious and up for it dancefloors: don't forget that this guy has collaborated with the likes of Myles Serge! Finally on the flip is "Petardex" a tough and trippy techno excursion whose hypnotic and experimental nature just begs your attention, calling to mind comparisons to recent Steve Bicknell or Acronym.
