Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint got off to a promising start last year with the Wrong Headspace 12" from Latvian artist N1L. Gamble's purview for the label is clearly international as this second UIQ release dips into the world of Zuli, aka Ahmed El Ghazoly, Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. Limited to 400 copies. Jagged beat experiments merge with high definition sound design plus classic and exotic instrumentation on "Robotic Handshakes in 4D", it's an apt title, really. New frontiers in bass music are explored on "131001G", texturised minimal techno on "Ahmed?" and rather abrasive bass assisted noise experiments like on final track "Dr Beckett". What next for UIQ? Consider us intrigued.

  4. Track 4
Review: Oh boy, another fine episide of L.A. Club Resource has dropped on us! Since the first Delroy Edwards EP on the imprint, this has been one of our favourite labels over the past year. However, this is not simply due to its house and techno releases, but more for how Edwards himself has given such creative freedom to his brainchild. While many were expecting straight floor cuts, releases such as this latest Zipcode demonstrate that Edwards and his tight-knit group of artists mean to showcase their own passions and skills. Zipcode aka Vereker - one of our own personal legends - drops four segments of noise and stripped beats. All apart from "Track 4" - a cavernous broken techno loop - all the other three tracks are pure machine noise from the depths of the inferno. Imagine Kevin Drumm loaded up on cough medicine and you're kinda close. Big.

  1. Dario Zenker - "Nearlin"
  2. Francois X - "Rising"
  3. Rod - "RSPCT"
  4. Marcelus - "Flash"
Review: The second of two swiftly announced 12"s on Marcel Dettmann Records to arrive this week features four more cuts the Berghain resident included in his excellent mix for Fabric earlier this week, and whilst the first was evenly split between high profile artists and newcomers this one is four heavy hitters deep. Dario Zenker, Francois X, ROD, and Marcelus all feature here and if you listened to fabric 77 it's likely you'll have been fiending after one of these tracks in particular. Within the context of fabric 77, "RSPCT" by Benny 'ROD' Rodriguez was an overpowering highlight and it's loses none of it's intensity when listened to in full. The broken, bruised and brushed techno rhythms of "Flash" by Marcelus is equally good.

  1. 27 Northwest
  2. Cooking Booking
  3. Growin
  4. Karlim
Review: Ever committed to the techno cause, Dario Zenker returns once more to his own Ilian Tape imprint with four intense statements of how classic and modern elements should be fused to make timeless tracks. "27 Northwest" undoubtedly has a whiff of original Detroit about it, but there's no escaping how much of a hook the lead synth is over the tough but dextrous beat. "Cooking Booking" meanwhile exists somewhere in that discordant realm Kevin Saunderson dipped his toes into before rave emerged as its own offshoot, all the time still pounding out a detailed broken techno pattern. "Growin" gets a little more heady in its use of old-skool chords before "Karlim" softens the edges of the EP with a glorious slice of emotive techno.

  1. There Is Hope (6:27)
  2. Gianluca Cazzeti (6:11)
  3. For Internal Use (5:37)
  4. Universal Spice (6:28)
Review: 2016 marks a decade since Dario Zenker released his first 12", the Whatever EP on Balkon. Here, he returns to the Ilian Tape label he co-founded with brother Marco for a first solo missive since his 2014 turn on The Trilogy Tapes. There's much to admire about Dedication, from the starburst synths and booming, broken techno rhythms of opener "There Is Hope", to the Roman techno revivalism of "Gianluca Cazzeti", and the skittish, funk-fuelled intensity of the Dave Clarke style "For Internal Use". Arguably best of all, though, is "Spice Universal", a delicious combination of dub-flecked loop techno and the undulating, far-sighted futurism of Detroit.

  1. Heeman
  2. Mount Eleven
  3. Kentay
  4. Watz
Review: With their combined output and that of the artists they put out on Ilian Tape, Dario and Marco Zenker are certainly a formidable force in the German techno scene and here they're back on their own turf with four imaginative cuts that keep dancefloor focus in mind without giving way to tracky functionality. "Heeman" punches with the most forthright thrust of all the jams, riding some skippy hats over a rumbling tom-like bassline and tense synths, while "Mount Eleven" swerves out into broken beat territory with whirling wraiths of melody sealing the deal on a psychedelic and engrossing atmosphere. "Kentay" too comes packaged in a fragmented framework although the bottom end hits with a greater heft than its predecessor, and then "Watz" finishes proceedings off with a short sojourn into heavy-laden ambient material.

  4. Remission (7:21)
Review:  Given that one of his previous projects involved creating a robotic gamelan orchestra, it is no surprise to learn that Aaron Kuffner approaches techno differently than the majority of his peers. On his latest release for The Bunker, Kuffner's adventurous sound is audible throughout. The title track is a high-paced tribal affair, while "An Army of Crickets" sees him veer into a grungy corner, where a soupy bass and a low-slung, muddy rhythm prevails. Kuffner explores other, quite different avenues too; "Wading" is a low-slung, moody rhythm, while "Trickles" is a bubbling, melodic groove, with all of the intricacies of an Indonesian funeral dirge.

Review: Argentina's Andres Zacco has form with Ilian Tape, debuting on the Zenker Brothers-helmed label back in 2011. Zacco is back in the IT fold, but this time it's through the label's X Series, a chapter reserved to more spontaneous white label action. As such, "Thaw" is a sublime mass of percussion riding solo on a soundscape, before being punched into shape by a powerful kick drum, while "Quirt" is more of a stripped-back techno slitherer for DJ tool use. Flip the wax and you'll find the weighty kicks and morphing sonics of "Beighty", alongside Ilian Tape's Rupcy's distorted, big room reinterpretation of "Thaw". All killer, no filler.

  3. Yoshi - "Not An Ordinary Place" (6:37)
  4. SBRI - "The Other Side" (5:17)
Review: Although this is credited as being Libertine's first official release, the label has already put out one record, a sort of white label to introduce the crew and the sound. Yoshi, Saverio Celestri and SBRi all featured on number 00, and the boys are back to inaugurate the label properly four back-to-basics house/techno hybrids. Yoshi and Celestri team up for the opener "No Time For School", a lo-fi, head-strong house bomb with a masterfully swelling baseline, while Celeste goes solo on the murky and mystical cut that is "Dangerous". On the flipside, Yoshi is back with the grainy pseudo electro of "Not An Ordinary Place" - perhaps the EP's finest moment - and SBRi drops some squelching truth all over the techno of "The Other Side". All in all, a fine EP, and a warmly recommended new addition to the contemporary house game.

Review: With his approach to music hugely informed by the landscape around him, Yagya is a shining example of the thriving electronic music culture that emanates out of Iceland. With previous form on albums for Force Inc and Subwax, he now sidles up to Adult Contemporary for a sublime offering in the shape of "Rigning Sjo", which comes on as a masterful demonstration of floatation tank ambience and submerged techno tropes with an ethereal, orchestral beauty. Mark E follows up with a rubbery bassline and salvo of storm samples on his remix, taking a more mechanical approach than the artist is more commonly known for. Dennis Kane then finishes things off with a more taut disco-sizzling version that keeps the dreamy atmosphere but piles in the hooks.

Review: Xosar established herself with an infectious live show, on display at regular appearances throughout the world, and with releases on labels like Rush Hour, Creme Organization and L.I.E.S.

Xosar's new release for Valcrond Video marks the onset of a darker, more dungeons & dragons oriented point of view. The four tracks feature both propulsive, doom-laden beats and expansive drum-free dream spaces. These sounds, appropriate for perved-out DJs and depressed teens alike, trace a narrative of pursuit, captivity, and erotic exsanguination.

Held in a stone tower, a prisoner's fluids are harvested for carnal application, before he is finally allowed to drain and find release in euphoric fields: bare dead trees, empty veins.

Review: Following the release of her brilliant - if a little too intense - debut album, Let Go, on Black Opal, Sheela Rahman pops up on eccentric Dutch imprint Pinkman with more house/techno hybrids and vintage synthesizer love. While the surging, hypnotic, raw and unflinching flipside "Phasers of Eden" - hissing analogue techno in the truest sense - will arguably ruffle most feathers, it's the softly-lit dreaminess of sparkling A-side "World of Illusion" that most impresses. Blessed with her usual top notch synthesizer work, bubbling electronics and exotic melodies, it sounds a little like Legowelt on one of his happier days. That, of course, is no bad thing.

Review: Mind melting techno from Xosar on her new new label Gyrocyre!!! "When people on our planet hold built up psychic tensions under the skin, the energy gestates in a womb-like growth until it's ready to burst through the flesh manifest as a creature called a Gyrocyre. Many people opt out of ever letting the beast emerge, happy to function at levels they can predict without having to face the challenge brought on by the Gyrocyre. It grows heavy and bloated with untapped potential. Those who embrace the change slice through the flesh and let it out. It fuses with the host, covering his or her skin like a mask. Depending on the nature of their heart, it gives them tools to save or destroy the world. We invite you to embrace the change and let your Gyrocyre out."
