  1. Amb-01 (5:44)
  2. Isolated (6:44)
  3. First Feeling (5:58)
  4. Motion (5:22)
Review: Having spent the last couple of years concentrating on his collaborative Zenker Brothers project with brother Dario, Marco Zenker has decided the time is right to deliver a new solo 12". Predictably, he hits the mark from the off, successfully blending starburst chords and loose, clattering drum machine rhythms on the tech-jazz influenced "Amb-01". Those looking for a more metronomic, 4/4 club techno roller should check the bounding kick drums and restless hi-hats of "Isolated". B1 cut "First Feeling" sounds like a Motor City techno take on The Orb's 1989 classic "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain", while closer "Motion" is little less than a sparkling, sunburst tribute to classic, hardcore-era breakbeat techno.

  1. Geezin
  2. Splifer
  3. Darai
  4. Lubiana
Review: The Zenker Brothers and their Ilian Tape venture get stronger by the minute, and here Marco flies solo with this latest EP, sounding in utterly rude health with it. "Geezin" is a distinctive opener, ditching standard 4/4 propulsion in favour of an airy drum machine arrangement infected with the slightest flurries of hardcore breaks and offset by wistful synth patterns. It's a curious combination that works magnificently, but for those wanting something a little more direct "Splifer" is on hand to deliver a more classically Zenker techno mantra. "Darai" brings the swing back in fine style, throwing down a chunky stomp to match the sizzling hats, and then "Lubiana" wrecks the surroundings with its magnificent pummel of low end percussion and gritty production values.

  1. Dario Zenker - "Nearlin"
  2. Francois X - "Rising"
  3. Rod - "RSPCT"
  4. Marcelus - "Flash"
Review: The second of two swiftly announced 12"s on Marcel Dettmann Records to arrive this week features four more cuts the Berghain resident included in his excellent mix for Fabric earlier this week, and whilst the first was evenly split between high profile artists and newcomers this one is four heavy hitters deep. Dario Zenker, Francois X, ROD, and Marcelus all feature here and if you listened to fabric 77 it's likely you'll have been fiending after one of these tracks in particular. Within the context of fabric 77, "RSPCT" by Benny 'ROD' Rodriguez was an overpowering highlight and it's loses none of it's intensity when listened to in full. The broken, bruised and brushed techno rhythms of "Flash" by Marcelus is equally good.

  1. 27 Northwest
  2. Cooking Booking
  3. Growin
  4. Karlim
Review: Ever committed to the techno cause, Dario Zenker returns once more to his own Ilian Tape imprint with four intense statements of how classic and modern elements should be fused to make timeless tracks. "27 Northwest" undoubtedly has a whiff of original Detroit about it, but there's no escaping how much of a hook the lead synth is over the tough but dextrous beat. "Cooking Booking" meanwhile exists somewhere in that discordant realm Kevin Saunderson dipped his toes into before rave emerged as its own offshoot, all the time still pounding out a detailed broken techno pattern. "Growin" gets a little more heady in its use of old-skool chords before "Karlim" softens the edges of the EP with a glorious slice of emotive techno.

Cat: IT 024. Rel: 14 Jul 14
  1. Heeman
  2. Mount Eleven
  3. Kentay
  4. Watz
Review: With their combined output and that of the artists they put out on Ilian Tape, Dario and Marco Zenker are certainly a formidable force in the German techno scene and here they're back on their own turf with four imaginative cuts that keep dancefloor focus in mind without giving way to tracky functionality. "Heeman" punches with the most forthright thrust of all the jams, riding some skippy hats over a rumbling tom-like bassline and tense synths, while "Mount Eleven" swerves out into broken beat territory with whirling wraiths of melody sealing the deal on a psychedelic and engrossing atmosphere. "Kentay" too comes packaged in a fragmented framework although the bottom end hits with a greater heft than its predecessor, and then "Watz" finishes proceedings off with a short sojourn into heavy-laden ambient material.

  4. Zarkoff X Cyborgs On Crack - "Penalty For Violation" (4:52)
Review: Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder label is back in action with an EP from Croatian darkwave maestro Zarkoff, in conjunction with conspirators such as Ikonal and Cyborgs On Crack. He's been active on the local scene for many years and only now is creeping onto the international radar, but this record should catapult him into the consciousness of all kinds of adventurous spinners. Managing to plunge into murky waters while retaining a propulsive, danceable edge to his sound, the most noticeable quality around this record is the synth work, which unfurls in thick, globulous brushstrokes of noirish melody perfect for the darker kind of dancefloors out there.

  4. Thaw (Rupcy remix) (5:42)
Review: Argentina's Andres Zacco has form with Ilian Tape, debuting on the Zenker Brothers-helmed label back in 2011. Zacco is back in the IT fold, but this time it's through the label's X Series, a chapter reserved to more spontaneous white label action. As such, "Thaw" is a sublime mass of percussion riding solo on a soundscape, before being punched into shape by a powerful kick drum, while "Quirt" is more of a stripped-back techno slitherer for DJ tool use. Flip the wax and you'll find the weighty kicks and morphing sonics of "Beighty", alongside Ilian Tape's Rupcy's distorted, big room reinterpretation of "Thaw". All killer, no filler.

  6. Alright (Surgeon Keith 4 Nat mix)
Review: Resurrected from its period of dormancy in requisite fashion with some prime Audiotech material from Juan Atkins, Tresor's Archiv series now turns to Greek producer Savvas Ysatis for Archiv #08. It's been some fourteen years and 145 releases since Ysatis first appeared on Tresor and his turn out for the Archiv series sees the spotlight fall on four re-mastered originals and two remixes that were previously released around the turn of the century. Known for his recent collaborative work with Taylor Dupree, three of Ysatis' six tracks - "Mar's Bar", "On The Hook" and "Bullwark" - that appear on Archiv #08 have been cherry picked from the two albums he released on Tresor in 1999 and 2001, while side-C and side-D of the double vinyl package house the Alright EP which featured remixes from Blake Baxter and Surgeon's dubby and melodic Keith 4 Nat Mix.

  4. Masher Track (5:46)
Review: The second 12" on Moscow-based mystery label Private Persons comes from Youngg P, a Ukraine-based DJ/producer whose debut release dropped on Kiev House a couple of years back. On the four tracks showcased here, he shows a good grasp of analogue house and techno dynamics. "Carpathian Rave" is a quirky, off-kilter jacker rich in buzzing electronics, liquid acid riffs and bustling house percussion, while "Ocean" fits the stargazing electronics of vintage Motor City techno to the saucer-eyed melodiousness of vintage Italian deep house. Meanwhile, creepy flipside "War" sounds like it was inspired by a mix of L.I.E.S style distorted techno and 1980s industrial funk. As for closer "Masher Track", it's a full-throated exploration of clanking, drum machine techno.

Review: Dekmantel presents a vinyl repress featuring three favourite tracks from the sought-after DKMNTL x Patta series where the Dutch festival powerhouse teams up with this renowned fashion brand based out of Amsterdam. Local hero Young Marco delivers the bittersweet and emotive "The Best I Could Do (With What I Had)"which is certainly raw yet absolutely soulful. Also on the A side we have got Voyage Direct main man Tom Trago with the high tech soul of "Brutal Romance" (TT Love Fix) that is geared towards some very euphoric, life affirming moments on the dancefloor as proven previously. Finally, Bas Bron dons the Fatima Yamaha alias once again for more gorgeous and glistening electro-pop on the wonderful "The Creature From Culture Creation" and it is totally sublime!

Review: Back in 2012, Young Male had the honour of serving up the first release on White Material, the hyped imprint he runs with DJ Richard. Surprisingly, this is his first solo effort on the label since. Opener "Hot For Destiny & The Street" is a surging, forthright affair, with clandestine, pitched-down spoken word vocals occasionally making their presence felt over a distorted, no-holds-barred techno groove. "Grey Gotham" is an altogether darker and moodier affair, with horror-influenced chords and pulsating electronic surges wrapping themselves around a deeper techno rhythm, while "Drug Deal Video" hustles and throbs to the sounds of drum machine handclaps, spacey synthesizer chords and intricate cymbal patterns.

Review: Ewan Smith has been in good form over the last 12 months, delivering a couple of fine EPs for Aus Music. Here he returns to Will Saul's label with more late night business to tantalize European dancefloors. The title track sets the tone, with Smith expertly layering spooky melodies and crackly samples atop a subtle, cymbal-heavy groove. He ups the ante a little on "#1", with sparse melodies riding a thickset techno groove. Flip for the deep, tech-tinged house smoothness of "253 (Decent Mix)", and a blistering, carnival-inspired techno interpretation of the title track from Dario Zenker.
