  3. Track 3
  4. Track 4
Review: Oh boy, another fine episide of L.A. Club Resource has dropped on us! Since the first Delroy Edwards EP on the imprint, this has been one of our favourite labels over the past year. However, this is not simply due to its house and techno releases, but more for how Edwards himself has given such creative freedom to his brainchild. While many were expecting straight floor cuts, releases such as this latest Zipcode demonstrate that Edwards and his tight-knit group of artists mean to showcase their own passions and skills. Zipcode aka Vereker - one of our own personal legends - drops four segments of noise and stripped beats. All apart from "Track 4" - a cavernous broken techno loop - all the other three tracks are pure machine noise from the depths of the inferno. Imagine Kevin Drumm loaded up on cough medicine and you're kinda close. Big.

  1. Electric Blood Complete (5:27)
  2. Euphonious (6:05)
  3. Encroach (6:47)
  4. Radiate (6:15)
Review: Zeta Reticula is one of the many aliases used by Slovenian DJ and producer, Uros Umek. In fact, you might well know him under the latter name, simply as Umek. Zeta Reticula, however, is his vintage dub techno-electro project form the early 00s, one which he hasn't returned to the infamous Electric Records label until now. This return to the much-coveted series marks the fifth since 2003's EP 4, and it's some straight-up electro nastiness. "Electric Blood Complete" sounds like a fire alarm going off amid a laser war in an industrial power station, and "Euphonious" strays towards more harmonic pastures thanks to its sublime synth work. On the B-side, "Encroach" breaks out the dub tricks and goes for a sleeker, more contained techno approach, followed by the equally straight and mechanical, minimal house jerk of "Radiate".

Cat: IT 026. Rel: 17 Nov 14
  1. Geezin
  2. Splifer
  3. Darai
  4. Lubiana
Review: The Zenker Brothers and their Ilian Tape venture get stronger by the minute, and here Marco flies solo with this latest EP, sounding in utterly rude health with it. "Geezin" is a distinctive opener, ditching standard 4/4 propulsion in favour of an airy drum machine arrangement infected with the slightest flurries of hardcore breaks and offset by wistful synth patterns. It's a curious combination that works magnificently, but for those wanting something a little more direct "Splifer" is on hand to deliver a more classically Zenker techno mantra. "Darai" brings the swing back in fine style, throwing down a chunky stomp to match the sizzling hats, and then "Lubiana" wrecks the surroundings with its magnificent pummel of low end percussion and gritty production values.

  1. Dario Zenker - "Nearlin"
  2. Francois X - "Rising"
  3. Rod - "RSPCT"
  4. Marcelus - "Flash"
Review: The second of two swiftly announced 12"s on Marcel Dettmann Records to arrive this week features four more cuts the Berghain resident included in his excellent mix for Fabric earlier this week, and whilst the first was evenly split between high profile artists and newcomers this one is four heavy hitters deep. Dario Zenker, Francois X, ROD, and Marcelus all feature here and if you listened to fabric 77 it's likely you'll have been fiending after one of these tracks in particular. Within the context of fabric 77, "RSPCT" by Benny 'ROD' Rodriguez was an overpowering highlight and it's loses none of it's intensity when listened to in full. The broken, bruised and brushed techno rhythms of "Flash" by Marcelus is equally good.

Cat: TTT 024. Rel: 21 Jul 14
  1. Morsin
  2. W3
  3. WM2
  4. Banded
Review: Ilian Tapes meets The Trilogy Tapes! Munich-based DJ and producer Dario Zenker aligns with Will Bankhead's unassailable label for a quartet of aces housed in the most distinctive of record sleeves. Alongside his brother Marco, Dario Zenker has stealthily built Ilian Tape into one of our favourite techno outlets thanks to their focus on artists and productions that never slump into tracky functionality. This sense of personality is very much evident across the four tracks on Morsin; take for example the A Side where the murky rolling techno of the title track is complemented by the exercise in building breakbeat pressure that is "W3". There's a wonderful freneticism to "WM2" where a strident bass drum thud is attacked by a dizzying array of zigzagging rhythms, whilst "Banded" ends proceedings in resolutely abstract territory.

  1. There Is Hope (6:27)
  2. Gianluca Cazzeti (6:11)
  3. For Internal Use (5:37)
  4. Universal Spice (6:28)
Review: 2016 marks a decade since Dario Zenker released his first 12", the Whatever EP on Balkon. Here, he returns to the Ilian Tape label he co-founded with brother Marco for a first solo missive since his 2014 turn on The Trilogy Tapes. There's much to admire about Dedication, from the starburst synths and booming, broken techno rhythms of opener "There Is Hope", to the Roman techno revivalism of "Gianluca Cazzeti", and the skittish, funk-fuelled intensity of the Dave Clarke style "For Internal Use". Arguably best of all, though, is "Spice Universal", a delicious combination of dub-flecked loop techno and the undulating, far-sighted futurism of Detroit.

  1. 27 Northwest
  2. Cooking Booking
  3. Growin
  4. Karlim
Review: Ever committed to the techno cause, Dario Zenker returns once more to his own Ilian Tape imprint with four intense statements of how classic and modern elements should be fused to make timeless tracks. "27 Northwest" undoubtedly has a whiff of original Detroit about it, but there's no escaping how much of a hook the lead synth is over the tough but dextrous beat. "Cooking Booking" meanwhile exists somewhere in that discordant realm Kevin Saunderson dipped his toes into before rave emerged as its own offshoot, all the time still pounding out a detailed broken techno pattern. "Growin" gets a little more heady in its use of old-skool chords before "Karlim" softens the edges of the EP with a glorious slice of emotive techno.

  1. Heeman
  2. Mount Eleven
  3. Kentay
  4. Watz
Review: With their combined output and that of the artists they put out on Ilian Tape, Dario and Marco Zenker are certainly a formidable force in the German techno scene and here they're back on their own turf with four imaginative cuts that keep dancefloor focus in mind without giving way to tracky functionality. "Heeman" punches with the most forthright thrust of all the jams, riding some skippy hats over a rumbling tom-like bassline and tense synths, while "Mount Eleven" swerves out into broken beat territory with whirling wraiths of melody sealing the deal on a psychedelic and engrossing atmosphere. "Kentay" too comes packaged in a fragmented framework although the bottom end hits with a greater heft than its predecessor, and then "Watz" finishes proceedings off with a short sojourn into heavy-laden ambient material.

  2. LB Dub Corp - "Take It Down Again" (in dub)
Review: Three of techno's biggest names under different alias appear on this second release Stroboscopic Artefacts have put out to celebrate their five year tenure of abstract techno. "Totemism" may well be an off-cut from Zeitgeber's debut and self-titled album, a collaboration between Speedy J and SA label boss Lucy. It's reminiscent of the early, rhythmically dubby productions of the label's earlier releases, while L.B. Dub Corp (aka Luke Slater) provides a reduction of his thunderous Ostgut Ton mega-storm "Take It Down In Dub". With more five year celebrations on the way, this adds to the unexplainable tone of a label that's now firmly fixed in Berlin club culture.

  6. Alright (Surgeon Keith 4 Nat mix)
Review: Resurrected from its period of dormancy in requisite fashion with some prime Audiotech material from Juan Atkins, Tresor's Archiv series now turns to Greek producer Savvas Ysatis for Archiv #08. It's been some fourteen years and 145 releases since Ysatis first appeared on Tresor and his turn out for the Archiv series sees the spotlight fall on four re-mastered originals and two remixes that were previously released around the turn of the century. Known for his recent collaborative work with Taylor Dupree, three of Ysatis' six tracks - "Mar's Bar", "On The Hook" and "Bullwark" - that appear on Archiv #08 have been cherry picked from the two albums he released on Tresor in 1999 and 2001, while side-C and side-D of the double vinyl package house the Alright EP which featured remixes from Blake Baxter and Surgeon's dubby and melodic Keith 4 Nat Mix.

  3. JTC - "Crush Arbor"
  4. DJ Stingray - "Ego Assault"
Review: Killekill continues to purposely differentiate itself from much of what is coming out of Berlin at the moment. As part of the three-part KilleKill Megahits series, the label has commissioned a far flung group of producers to contribute to its ghetto-laced techno oddities. Version 10.1 deploys Bill Youngman, Radioactive Man, James T. Cotton and DJ Stingray to drop a varied range of insidious acid licks and venomous electro beats for a refreshing take club squelch. Youngman's "The 2" is a steroid fuelled version of Sega's 1986 arcade classic Outrun, while Radioactive Man's "Addict" is an ghoolish acid bomb strafed with sooty resonators. James T. Cotton lowers some serious weight in "Crush Arbor" via a pulsating bass, smashed up hats and woozy synths. Erstwhile Drexciya affiliate DJ Stingray then unearths another spacious and acidified electro gem like only he can.

Review: Back in 2012, Young Male had the honour of serving up the first release on White Material, the hyped imprint he runs with DJ Richard. Surprisingly, this is his first solo effort on the label since. Opener "Hot For Destiny & The Street" is a surging, forthright affair, with clandestine, pitched-down spoken word vocals occasionally making their presence felt over a distorted, no-holds-barred techno groove. "Grey Gotham" is an altogether darker and moodier affair, with horror-influenced chords and pulsating electronic surges wrapping themselves around a deeper techno rhythm, while "Drug Deal Video" hustles and throbs to the sounds of drum machine handclaps, spacey synthesizer chords and intricate cymbal patterns.
