I See What You Did There (limited 1-sided purple marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: SSPS 3. Rel: 27 Jun 16
  1. I See What You Did There (9:25)
Review: Nijmegen label Shipwrec have been in fairly imperious form this year, canvassing the spectrum of electro for some fine sounding and even-finer-looking records. Washington State artist Chris Roman issued his second 214 album on Shipwrec last year and returns here for "I See What You Did There", the first of several singles to arrive over the coming months - Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk and Lunar Disko also have records in the works with him. Taking shape as a one track 12" for the latest in Shipwrec's Silk Screen Printed Series, "I See What You Did There" snaps and throbs in all the right places across its nine minutes but is tempered with a sense of emotive contemplation that lends it some extra depth.

  4. Them (8:05)
Review: Dave '2562' Huismans returns to Clone Basement Series for the first time since 2012, with another installment of the ongoing Archive series. As usual, there's plenty to enjoy, with opener "Cheater VIP" - much sought-after since he dropped it in his Boiler Room set last year - providing the near perfect fusion of funk-fuelled techno rhythms, metallic percussion and industrial textures. "Funkstation" is an altogether creepier, deeper proposition, with sinewy strings and discordant horn samples complimenting a sludgy groove. The rolling intensity of "Us" ups the creepy stakes even further, helped, in no small part, by some particularly ghostly cymbals.

  4. Cycles Of Violence
  5. Depford Blues (Excerpt)
Review: A Model Authority sees Shifted and Sigha join forces for a series of mooted releases that commence with Model 001. The new collaborative was apparently born out of "the desire to rise above the very modern mediocrity and complacency that surrounds us," and it sees both producers in a German-techno kind of mood. Much of the EP's harsh and quick-fire loops suggest an early-Regis influence, like "Pieces Of Me" and "Cycles Of Violence", while "Collapse (Rhythm)" sees three lone bass drums lumber in three-beat time like a half finished Henning Baer production. Model 001 also brings with it some industrial experimentation with "Etched" sounding like a broken television furiously exhaling white noise, while "Depford Blues (Excerpt)" is the perfect soundtrack for a Chris Cunningham remake of George Orwell's book 1984.

  3. Without Time (Nail remix)
Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

  2. Metropolis (Trolley Route remix) (6:35)
  3. Metropolis (Function remix) (5:54)
  4. Metropolis (Marcel Fengler remix) (6:09)
Review: Dutch label Dynamic reflection continues to go from strength to strength with their latest offering from Abstract Division, the power duo comprised of label boss paul Boex and Dave Miller. The original of "Metropolis" is a nice slice of soulful melodic techno that fans of Heiko Laux or Vince Watson will be all over. The first thing you may think then listening to the Trolley Route mix is it sounds like Oscar Mulero; it is and the remix adopts his trademark hypnotic take on things. It all gets more hectic on the accompanying big gun remixes from Function and Marcel Fengler; Dave Sumner's pounding yet atmospheric version is all you'd expect, but he keeps the lush melody of the original intact and it works well. Fengler's rendition delivers exactly what he's renowned for in the form of energised, peak time minimal; just the way it should be!

  8. Windimoto - "Friday Night: UBQ"
Review: A hefty double 12" from Generator features a slew of basement techno bombs from both sides of the Atlantic (oh, and Australia). From the pounding, relentless throb of Abstract Science's "The Grinder" to the shuffling groove of "Detroitism" by DJ-T 1000, the eight tracks cover the full breadth of techno's rich sonic landscape. Other highlights include the broken beats and woodblock percussion on Plural's "07" and the more experimental vibe of "Fine & Mellow" by Mathematics boss and general Chicago underground legend, Jamal M. An unmissable collection of tracks packaged in highly collectable artwork by Alan Oldham, who was also responsible for the superbly illustrated Defenders Of The Deep House World EP that surfaced on Third Ear a few months back.

  4. Do You Feel What I Feel
Review: Apparel Music is happy to present the Perception EP from Portuguese producer Accatone - named after the debut film by Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Primed with four of Accatone's own productions, Perception demonstrates this producer to be a fiend for the groove and rhythm yet also mindful of 808 drum samples and lush chords. Accatone's musical know how, gained through a life on full front musicianship and live acts, enables him to translate his soul world influences into contemporary House music. It's difficult to sum up his productions and his DJ sets as in a way he thrives for the old school House and Techno and brings his own imprint, a highly organic dance floor experience that can change in a clap and still maintain a natural voyage like flow. With a vast music selection on his crate, Accatone is able to blend both the old and new without any trouble of a sort.

Review: There's plenty to get excited about with the emergence of Swedish deep techno operator Acronym, as has been demonstrated on the laid bare, haunting twelves in the Dimensional Exploration series and an appearance on Northern Electronics. This latest offering is no different, dancing a fine line between ambient drone abandon and sunken techno with arresting results. "Pelagic" may pile on plenty of drums but they're shaped so as not to disturb the thick blanket of pad that hangs over the track. "Photic" meanwhile works on a stepped kick pattern that punches through a murk of hazy, distant synths, forever caught in a hypnotic loop. This may be strung-out and repetitive, but it's the finest example of how to make that approach work.

  1. Purity (6:05)
  2. Floating (5:51)
  3. Constant Flow (4:58)
  4. Cleansed In Fire (8:22)
Review: Acronym is definitely a staple of Scandinavian techno powerhouse Northern Electronics and delivers the goods once again on the Guadalquivir EP. The trippy and swirling synth modulations on "Purity" provide truly mind melting goodness over its slamming electro beat. "Floating" (by comparison) is less intense yet equally more cerebral on this slow burning smack techno excursion. On the flip, "Constant Flow" is without doubt the highlight on here; this truly evil and all-consuming trip is one of the best examples of how great hypnotic techno is done, this side of Mike Parker or Donato Dozzy. Final offering "Cleansed In Fire" goes back to the young artist's original sound as heard on earlier releases for the label such as the Red River Gum or Nautilus EPs. Listen and learn!

  1. Activation Code (17:29)

Review: Positioned on the fringes of the framework of labels associated with LIES, Steve Summers and Nick 'Bookworms' Dawson's low key Confused House label has been a source of much joy for those selectors seeking vinyl shaped hardware throwdowns. Their fifth release introduces a new project from Summers and Future Times captain Max D called Activated and it's rather special indeed! "Activation Code" is an enlightening journey into crystalline techno that sounds like BNJMN classic "See Thru Stars" remixed by Neworldaquarium. Even better is B-side track "Activation Key" which presents a more abstract side to Activated and veers in countless directions across it's sixteen minutes.

Cat: BROS 006. Rel: 17 Nov 14
  1. AD\\HH - "Dead Hush"
  2. AD\\SS - "Security Breach"
  3. AD\\DC - "Sonic Erosion"
Review: By now you should be more than familiar with the concept central to the Brothers label, which has seen a succession of techno artists collaborating with like minded contemporaries. Mancunian techno brutalists AnD are the main players on this latest edition, swiftly following up that LP for Electric Deluxe with a 12" of joint productions featuring Headless Horseman, Sunil Sharpe and D Carbone. Though typically dystopian in sound, there's an element of restrain to the opening HH hookup "Dead Hush", whilst the nicely swung rhythms make a change from the relentless techno thud. On the flip Sunil Sharpe leads AnD down a mind bending acid wormhole on "Security Breach" whilst REPITCH artist D Carbone turns matters towards straight up warehouse techno on the finale "Sonic Erosion".

Review: Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. In a number of interviews, the might Aphex Twin hinted that he has vast artilleries of tracks stacked up and unreleased, probably more on purpose than out of laziness...or maybe not. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor. This is banging brain dynamite coated in the man's iconic style and flair. Welcome back AFX, and many hats off to Warp for making it happen.

  1. HTH020 (The Haxan Cloak's Cloud Of Witness)
  2. Typeface/Greyscale ((Vatican Shadow's The World Is Complete)
Review: Earlier this year Houndstooth regulars Akkord released the HTH020 EP, in which the duo took their bass-heavy sound to darker, more industrial places. It's something explored more explicitly on this remix package, which may well have two of the year's most radical tracks revisions. Tri Angle artist The Haxan Cloak delivers the epic 10-minute "Cloud of Witness" remix, taking elements from all four of the original Akkord EP's tracks, and turning them into an unclassifiable behemoth of bass, drone and strobing beats. Vatican Shadow's take on "Greyscale" and "Typeface" is a little more conventional, but nevertheless turns the two tracks into a powerful piece of techno that would demolish a dance floor in the right setting.

Review: This eighth Dystopian record presents the debut proper of label co-founder Alex Do. Before this he appeared on the one various artist EP alongside Rodhad, Felix K and Recondite, and it seems now is his time to shine. He does so by putting heavy emphasis on the synth work in his music and all three tracks are melodic and bright in tone which is quite the contrast to the previous releases of the label. Combine your favourite synthy elements of Mathew Jonson, Legowelt and Laurent Garnier with some good old fashion 909 techno and you have Alex Do's Stalker.
