Review: London label Pacific Command brings the heat again, this time courtesy of Vancouver act 1800HAIGHTSTREET (Lobster Theremin/Mork) who follow up some killer releases by nthng and Reflec. Starting out with the lush and deeply hypnotic "Georhythms" with its airy pads, broken beat and tribal percussion, they then get stuck into the fierce industrial techno rage of "Apprentice" which calls to mind classic Marcel Dettmann or more recently Fango. Finally, on the flip is "Interactions" which carries on with the more aggressive tendencies with its reverb and delay drenched aesthetics, creating some properly tunnelling vibes for sure-fire dancefloor impact.

  1. I See What You Did There (9:25)
Review: Nijmegen label Shipwrec have been in fairly imperious form this year, canvassing the spectrum of electro for some fine sounding and even-finer-looking records. Washington State artist Chris Roman issued his second 214 album on Shipwrec last year and returns here for "I See What You Did There", the first of several singles to arrive over the coming months - Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk and Lunar Disko also have records in the works with him. Taking shape as a one track 12" for the latest in Shipwrec's Silk Screen Printed Series, "I See What You Did There" snaps and throbs in all the right places across its nine minutes but is tempered with a sense of emotive contemplation that lends it some extra depth.

Review: Frustrated Funk, Shopwrec and Central Processing Unit are just some of the quality labels on which the enigmatic 214 has delivered his wayward strains of electro and techno. This new single for Lunar Disko is straight-up, high calibre business, as per usual, starting with the mesmerising pads and alluring soundscapes of "The Breakfast Club", a beat-driven escapade through a wave of majestic synths. "Lunar Landing" is more on the Dutch electro side of things, thanks to its sub-aquatic beats and general demeanour while, on the flip, "Jade" injects some Chicago house live through an industrial filter, and "Hurley" liquifies its synths down to a thick pool of sonics and subtle beats. Gorgeous music.

  3. O Tom Potom S.T (6:16)
Review: Last year, it was unofficially announced that Serbian musical misfit Nenad Markovic (AKA the snappily-named 33.10.3402) had delivered an album to L.I.E.S. While we're still waiting for that set, this 12" marks the experimental techno and ambient producer's third EP for Ron Morelli's prolific imprint. He begins in predictably creepy, otherworldly fashion, effortlessly blending backwards percussion, snatched field recordings, heavy bass and ghostly electronics on epic A-side "100 Drone Radio Passive Scape". Things get a little more upbeat on B1 cut "No Decline A (121 Roland MC303), where manipulated, acid-style electronic lines rise and fall over a metronomic kick-drum. Meanwhile, Markovic's innate ability to turn experimental productions into atmospheric ambient classics is once again showcased on closing track "O Tom Protom ST".

  4. Chorleywood Bread (6:12)
Review: With just the one 400ppm release to his name, 2013's high-octane No Nocere 12" for Avian, you would be forgiven for thinking this was a one-off project from New York's Shawn O'Sullivan. However, given his various other solo and collaborative endeavours (Further Reductions and Civil Duty being the most prominent of the latter) it's no surprise to see a dearth of 400ppm goodness. All that changes with Just In Time, the first 12" of what looks to be a more productive year for Shifted's Avian label than their 2015, and a record that features four superb productions from O'Sullivan. Those wanting some stripped back techno blessed with heady, warping drones and frenetic sequencing will find plenty to enjoy here; "Everyday Extinction" sounds particularly mind-bending.

  4. Graveyard Shift (3:51)
Review: Having recently devoted more of his time to the breezy, melodious bliss of the D.K project, Dang Khoa-Chau once again dons the 45 ACP alias for a more downbeat E.P on L.I.E.S. It's arguably far more accessible than his previous work for the label under the now familiar moniker, but still pleasingly left-of-centre. There's much to admire throughout, from the poignant melodies, drifting keys and spaced-out drums of "Hang In There", and Marimba-laden deep space techno of "Smoked Out", to the clarinet-laden ambient textures of bittersweet closer "Graveyard Shift". While opener "Slick Response" - a bubbling, ear-pleasing chunk of metronomic techno - feels a little more positive, it's still largely melancholic in tone.

  5. Silent Servant - "Severed Union" (4:13)
Review: The sixth issue from Jealous God, and the first of what promises to be another year of intrigue for the label, pairs up visual director Juan Mendez with 51717, aka New York artist Lili Schulder. Any fans of Schulder's 51717 cassette for Opal Tapes or her Shadowlust collaboration with Svengalisghost will be excited by the prospect of some new music committed to wax and she's on wonderfully abstract form here. Listening to opening track "The Glove" is an experience similar to being slowly covered by a viscous liquid to the point of suffocation, with her barely audible spoken word delivery only adding to the sense of foreboding. Complementing this, 51717 provides two shorter but equally striking compositions with "Regard" especially chilling. It's a mood that seeps into the two Silent Servant productions with "Severed Union" ripe mixtape opener material. Do check the mix CD from Surface Tension pair Nihar Bahall & Jason Polastri too!

Review: 62nd Cell may be a new name, but the producer behind it, David Campbell, boasts a discography that stretches right back to the tail end of the 1980s. He's perhaps most famous for his early '90s work for General Production Recordings and R&S under the Hi-Ryze and Autonation aliases. The six tracks showcased here vary in style, drawing influence from original Detroit techno, electro (see the fantastically heavy and spacey "April Fool's Day"), IDM, and even dusty, ambient house era hip-hop (sub-heavy closer "Bluestuff"). We're particularly enjoying the bleep and bass meets carnival techno brilliance of "Get Out", but to be honest it is all pretty darn good.

  3. Hymns - "Route Acid" (6:06)
  4. TUC - "4x5_83x2" (6:40)
Review: Aussie imprint Salt Mines made something of an impact with their debut release, a multi-artist EP that offered a distinctive take on the dreamy, head-in-the-clouds world of ambient-leaning, analogue deep house. This follow-up is every bit as enjoyable. There's a wonderfully spacey, loved-up feel about the intelligent techno electronics, tactile pads and hissing drum machine hits of 92 Spacedrum Orchestra's "Raw Bass (Dub 1)", while TV Out sneakily combines the new age haziness of Hashman Deejay, with the rolling grooves of Chez Damier style deep house on "Always Anyways". Hymn's "Route Acid" sounds like an unlikely jam session between Global Communication, Larry Heard and Psychik Warriors Ov Gaia, while TUC's sublime, ultra-deep "4x5_83x2" feels like a long lost, early '90s ambient techno masterpiece.

  4. Neo Life (TRP dub) (7:58)
Review: The shady, provocative artist who goes by the name of 99Letters is back with a selection of mesmerising techno-not-techno tracks for the young and audacious Dalmata Daniel label. As with the rest of this producer's music, these jittery, improvisational outsider tunes have got the sound of the cassette hiss very much at the forefront of the mix, and you can almost hear the cogs of those reel-to-reels turning gloriously. "Neo Life" is a pallid, dreamy stratosphere of beats and pads, but the lead tune "Untold Future" is where we really begin to hear 99Letters' style, that dubby, hazy kind of techno that travels on the borders of dance music and electronica. "Cooper" is similarly washed-out, except that here the beat arrangement has got more in common with electro than tech, while "Neo Life (TRP dub)" is a solid, acid-ridden squelcher with a magnificent layer of distortion and analogue funk.

Cat: AMS 009. Rel: 14 Nov 16
  1. Bygones (8:36)
  2. Peace Offering (8:09)
Review: There's something undeniably unsettling about "Bygones", the lead track from Dave Huismans' latest outing under the A Made Up Sound pseudonym. It begins with the kind of feverish, voodoo-inspired drums regularly found on seriously heavy African drum workouts. When the metronomic kick drum comes in, it feels disarmingly out of time. It isn't, of course, but it's an undeniably trippy effect. On the flip, Huismans goes deeper, combining a hypnotic kick-drum pattern with hushed, dubbed-out chords, a locked-in bassline, and occasional melancholic melodies. It's as quietly beautiful and picturesque as the A-side is druggy and intense.

Review: Dave '2562' Huismans returns to Clone Basement Series for the first time since 2012, with another installment of the ongoing Archive series. As usual, there's plenty to enjoy, with opener "Cheater VIP" - much sought-after since he dropped it in his Boiler Room set last year - providing the near perfect fusion of funk-fuelled techno rhythms, metallic percussion and industrial textures. "Funkstation" is an altogether creepier, deeper proposition, with sinewy strings and discordant horn samples complimenting a sludgy groove. The rolling intensity of "Us" ups the creepy stakes even further, helped, in no small part, by some particularly ghostly cymbals.

Review: A Made Up Sound man Dave Huismans is not messing around on this 12", his first outing on Delsin for six years. Opener "Thin Air" may contain creepy melodies, strange samples and curious orchestral samples, but these largely play second fiddle to a booming techno rhythm. "All Out" and "Waybackmachine" also hit home hard, with trademark rhythmic madness and densely layered chords combining to create two hectic and intense broken techno smashers. Even the EP's most laidback moment, the noticeably deeper "I Repeat", owes its' power to a surging sub-bass line and some snappy post-dubstep rhythms, rather than its' faintly unsettling electronics and melancholic musical elements.

Review: A Model Authority sees Shifted and Sigha join forces for a series of mooted releases that commence with Model 001. The new collaborative was apparently born out of "the desire to rise above the very modern mediocrity and complacency that surrounds us," and it sees both producers in a German-techno kind of mood. Much of the EP's harsh and quick-fire loops suggest an early-Regis influence, like "Pieces Of Me" and "Cycles Of Violence", while "Collapse (Rhythm)" sees three lone bass drums lumber in three-beat time like a half finished Henning Baer production. Model 001 also brings with it some industrial experimentation with "Etched" sounding like a broken television furiously exhaling white noise, while "Depford Blues (Excerpt)" is the perfect soundtrack for a Chris Cunningham remake of George Orwell's book 1984.

Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.
