Dual Waveform Generator

A flexible Wave Generator mode provides 2 oscillators with dedicated outputs. Each oscillator can create a variety of waveforms - sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, pulse, and noise - whose shape and phase can be adjusted to suit many applications. These sounds can be used in the audio range or as control voltage sources, and they can be set to cycle continuously or act as one-shot impulses; that means you can turn them into LFOs, envelopes, triggers, and control voltage generators, as well as sound sources. Attaching the NTS-2 to any patchable synthesizer instantly expands its power.

FFT/Spectrum Analyser

Pick a key, a mode and control the BPM of The NDLR's MIDI clock.

With two sets of 5 pin DIN MIDI inputs and outputs, and four USB MIDI virtual ports you have lots of ways to connect your MIDI devices. There is also CV clock in and out connectors to sync with your Korg Volcas, modular or semi modular synths.

It works with MIDI hardware synths, and your DAW or tablet, if that's your thing.

Once you master the basics, dive into the 8x modulation matrix. It lets you animate most of The NDLR's parameters. You can even send LFOs to your MIDI gear.

The NDLR includes a Pattern editor to make arp and modulation patterns, a rhythm editor and now a Chord Sequencer too! Once you have your perfect piece, you can save your patches.

What's new in The NDLR (v2)?
By popular demand, a soft-power button has added. The NDLR (v2) is powder coated with a black faceplate and beautiful red base. And the internals were modified for a new, faster microcontroller. The feature set remains the same, though there are some surprises waiting to be discovered in the menus. So far, new features are being back ported to the original The NDLR via firmware updates, as long as it does not require the faster processor.

The Four Parts


The PAD part is a polyphonic chord player for getting beautiful PADs out of your favourite poly synth. Like all of the other parts, the PAD plays notes based on the selected global chord. When you press a chord button the notes stay on until you press the next chord or stop the part, so you can twist knobs on your synths or play a lead part on guitar. Change or modulate the chord octave position, note range, spread, and strum.

A really cool feature of the PAD part is the "Interleaved Poly-Chain". When enabled, this will send the chord notes to up to 4 MIDI channels in a round robin fashion. Really great for ethereal evolving patches on a multi-timbral synth, or for turning multiple mono-synths into a poly synth! Six voices from 2 Volca FMs? Sure!

There are two "Motifs" which are extremely versatile sequenced arpeggiators. Select a pattern for each one and press Play! Independently tweak on clock division, pattern length, octave position and more. You can create your own patterns with the onboard pattern editor, and add rhythm with the onboard Rhythm editor. The motifs play the notes contained in the currently selected chord, so you don't need to pick notes on a keyboard. The NDLR supports a 10 to 300 BPM clock so play as fast or slow as you like, or use an external clock source.

The Drone part can play a single continuous note like a traditional drone does... or choose from various retrigging options, such as having the note retrigger on a chord change, the down beat, every beat, up beat, etc. You can also choose to add a 3rd and/or 5th note to the root note for a polyphonic drone. Or have the drone play a thundering kick drum if you want to.

Requirements:

USB Power Supply not included; The NDLR (v2) runs on 5V DC, 140mA. The original is 90mA.
The NDLR comes with a 6 foot USB cable. You can purchase longer or shorter cables as needed, with USB A to USB B connectors. Users of newer Macs may need to purchase a USB B to USB C cable or use an adapter.
MIDI Synthesizer(s); The NDLR is a MIDI playing device, it doesn't make any sound on its own, it sends MIDI messages to your MIDI sound modules. It can play most anything with MIDI input including vintage synths, modern synths, mono and polyphonic synths, software synthesizers, on an iPad, PC, stand-alone or VSTs in a DAW. Note that some vintage synths or synths with poor MIDI implementations may be prone to getting stuck notes. Use the Panic button on The NDLR when needed.
To connect many synths, and for the best MIDI timing we recommend using an active, 1 input to 4 or more outputs MIDI thru device or MIDI router, such as the MRCC.
The NDLR has rich velocity controls if your synths support velocity, not all do.

MIDI

MIDI-in Options:
Connect a MIDI keyboard or sequencer and The NDLR selectable transpose MIDI channel to transpose from the key of "C" to the current NDLR key & mode.
Use a MIDI keyboard or sequencer to select chords. Choose The NDLR "Control-In" MIDI channel. The white keys map to chord degrees I-VII. Optionally black keys map to the chord type. Sonority is automatic based on key & mode.
Most features of The NDLR can be controlled by inbound CC messages.
All notes and CCs pass thru except for The NDLR control channel.
With 2 MIDI 5 pin and 4 USB MIDI in and outs, The NDLR is a MIDI merger and a MIDI splitter. See the manual for details.
MIDI-out Options:
Selectable Drone MIDI-out channel (Off, Pad, 1-16). Pad choice means same as Pad channel.
Selectable Pad MIDI-out channel (1-16). Poly-chains play on next successive MIDI-out channel(s). Example: Pad MIDI-out ch = 4. Polychain = 1 - all pad notes on ch 4. Polychain = 2 - every two notes plays on channels 4/5. Polychain = 4 - every 4 notes plays on channels 4/5/6/7. The Radius is a ring modulator and frequency shifter with pitch tracking and an advanced LFO. It is designed around a novel "eight-quadrant multiplier" algorithm that smoothly transitions from ring modulation to frequency shifting and allows different frequency ratios for the upper and lower tones. Radius puts complex harmonic structures, bell-like tones, metallic textures, frequency shifting, soft tremolo, and bubbly phaser sounds at your fingertips.

A ring modulator multiplies two signal signals together to create new frequencies that are the sum and difference of the input frequencies. One signal is your instrument, and the other is an internal oscillator. The Radius can double the sum or difference frequency ratios and adjust their relative levels, unlocking a spectrum of timbres beyond traditional ring modulation.

Pitch tracking, a push-to-tune footswitch, and picking dynamics make the Radius responsive and predictable on stage. Hold the left footswitch and play a note to tune the carrier oscillator to that note. Pitch tracking maintains the pitch ratio as you play up and down the scale, or tracks by a ratio (or inverse) for more dynamic sounds. An expression pedal can be assigned to any combination of knobs.

The Radius has an advanced LFO with triangle, square, random waveforms and an eight step sequencer, all of which can be envelope triggered. The envelope follower makes it responsive to playing dynamics, and two "X" modulation waveforms create sweeping spectral changes.

Well-spaced controls and stereo input/output make the Radius perfect for sound design, synths, and creative mixing. A full MIDI implementation allows you to sync to MIDI clock, sequence parameter changes, and play the carrier oscillator from a keyboard.

Mixer section

Each channel has the following:

Stereo or mono - Each channel can be treated as a stereo channel or a mono channel with two summed inputs.

CV inputs for both panning and level control

Two send buses - You can route each channel to one of two send buses. Each send bus is stereo. You can choose if you want the send to come before or after the level/panning controls.

Mute - The mute has both latching mute (up) and a momentary mute (down). The mute uses a capacitor to slow the turn off and on of the mute action. So it is mostly click-less, but you may find an occasional pop.

Cue bus - You can route each channel to the cue bus.

Mains Section

Two stereo sends outputs
Two stereo returns - which can also be used to directly insert into the main mix.
Main stereo outputs - level controlled with the slider and stereo VU meter.
Main mono output - summed output of the main L&R. If you are after an 8ch mono mix, you can use each channel in stereo mode, use the level control to control the level and then pan control to control the levels of the two channels.

Cue Section

Expandable

Bartenders can be cascaded to create 8ch, 12ch, or 16ch mixer. The main level is what is sent the main level control can act as a group control.

Barbacks can be added to add 2ch to your mix. Barbacks can also be cascaded enabling up to a 16ch mixer configuration.

Send-VCA can be added for CV control of the level of the send.

DVCA, Cast Iron, Mingles, and USB-2CH can all be connected with Dupont cables (aka female to female breadboard cables) via pin headers on the back of the modules. Connecting the in and out pins will send/receive the audio into the next module.

Notes: A good delay was an essential part of the classic analog synthesizer sound. More often than not, that delay came from a tape-style echo machine until affordable digital delays were created. The Monotron Delay is an analog synthesizer optimized for sound effects. In addition to its analog oscillator, filter and LFO, it also provides a space delay that's indispensible for swooping, cosmic sounds. The monotron Delay even reproduces the pitch changes that occur when you vary the delay time, just as though you were using an analog tape echo. While the 0-COAST utilizes classic modular synthesis techniques, it's designed to operate with or without the use of patch cables. COSMOS is a drifting memory station designed to work with meditative states through music. The design of the controls, functions and generated soundscapes are intended to evoke, in both performer and listener, states and experiences inherent in meditation, such as limitless space, fluidity, spontaneous development, presence, the ability to hear, tranquility, the experience of subtle harmony and happiness enveloping the whole world.

From a functional point of view, COSMOS is a large array of sound memory, in which recorded sounds undergo constant recombinations, spontaneously generating an ever-changing soundscape. This is achieved in three ways - by a mathematical shift based on the relationships between large prime numbers (the size of all delay lines are different primes), an asynchronous operation of the LFO, and modulation with a slowly changing chaotic signal. As a result, it allows the endless layering and processing of various sounds, as in a looper, but without an intrusive, repetitive loop.

COSMOS generates rich, fluid and evolving soundscapes perfect for ambient music. In case of failure, it can be replaced with a high-quality modern switched-mode power supply with an output voltage of DC 12 volts, the center is plus and an output current of at least 0.5 amperes (more is fine). Notes: Your USB device is plugged into the MIDI USB Host mk3 instead of into a computer. It provides MIDI In & Out sockets for USB MIDI keyboards and controllers which have only a USB B type socket. For example, used with a USB-Solo, it allows the USB-Solo to be used in a standard MIDI setup, just like a Pro-Solo. It has a USB Host port (USB A type socket), a MIDI In and a MIDI Out (both 5 pin DIN).

The MIDI USB Host mk3 now has additional features. In addition to the standard operating mode, there are now two further modes.

Standard mode (LED Green):
MIDI data received at the MIDI In socket is sent to the USB device and MID data from the USB device is sent to the MIDI Out socket.

Merge 1 mode (LED Amber):
MIDI IN does not go to USB device but instead is merged with MIDI data coming from the USB device which is then sent to the MIDI Out socket.

Merge 2 mode (LED Red):

Connecting
You can connect one "Class Compliant" USB device directly into the MIDI USB Host. If your host has the latest firmware already installed then you can plug in a powered USB hub and up to four USB devices can then be connected. Earlier MIDI USB Host mkIIs can be updated with a free download which is available from the support section of our website. Serial numbers N6-2421 already have the hub compatible firmware. Serial numbers N3-0541and upward can be updated.

It is recommended that you attach your USB device to the MIDI USB Host before applying power. Then plug-in and power the power adaptor. The active LED should be lit up. If you apply power with nothing plugged into the MIDI USB Host, the Active LED will flash steadily; this is to indicate that it is waiting for a suitable device to be attached. If it is still flashing when you have attached your device, then it is possible that your device is not class compliant, however you could try turning off the power and start again.

Some USB MIDI devices have two modes of operation and can be set to operate in Class Compliant mode even if this is not the default. The Class Compliant mode might be called "generic driver", the other mode may be called something like "advanced driver". Consult the device manual to see if the mode can be set for Class Compliant.

If you unplug then re-plug the USB cable while it is powered the device might reconnect, but it is not certain.

Power

It is essential to use only the supplied 5V regulated power adaptor. Applying a voltage higher than 5V to the MIDI USB Host will probably not damage the MIDI USB Host itself, but it could damage any attached USB device as the 5V is passed on to the attached USB device for buss power. There is protection circuitry inside the MIDI USB Host to protect against reverse polarity and over-voltage, but these should be treated as a last resort and are not guaranteed to prevent damage to an attached USB device in the event of over-voltage as the USB buss voltage could rise to 6.5V before being clamped.

Care should be taken to ensure that power adaptors for other pieces of equipment are not accidentally plugged into the MIDI USB Host.

If the input voltage rises above 6.5 volts then power will be shut off. The LED will go out and the unit will not operate again until power has been removed for at least 60 seconds. This allows time for the thermal fuse to reset.
