Review: Synchronic tells the story of two New Orleans paramedics and longtime best friends who are called to a series of bizarre and gruesome accidents. They put it down to the effects of a freaky new party drug but once things gets personal and one of the main character's daughters disappears, the weird truth is revealed. The soundtrack is a collaboration between Jimmy LaValle, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and centres around a custom synth patch that, "replicates what the drug may sound like." Violinists, cellists, percussionists and pianist also join in to make this most unsettling of soundtracks.

"This Place" eases us in with interlocked percussion and big Booker T level organ blasts while "Our Streets" takes us down more shadowy lanes where the synths hover like fog and ooze slowly like a jungle record played at half speed and "Infinite Bliss" eases us into something more comfortable with slinky bongo rolls and lingering, hazy keys in a way that could be compared to Joe Claussell. Review: Some 15 months after the first multi-artist "Folio" EP landed in stores, 1985 Music has dropped a sequel. It's another all-action affair, with all four cuts hitting home hard. Label founder Alix Perez kicks things off with "White Lies", a minimalist roller where metallic percussion hits and evocative soul vocals rise above a thoroughly filthy, wobble-powered bassline. Label favourites Submarine step up with sub-heavy hot-stepper "Grunge", before Scepticz and Lavance take things up a notch or two via the industrial strength distorted bass, mind-altering electronics and punchy beats of "Flatline". To round things off, Hyroglifics and Visages get together on the skewed but energy-packed creepiness of "Searching".

Review: Coming seven years after the release of the previous full-length record, "Every Eleven Seconds (5 Rue Christine)", and two years since the their split LP with Woods (Shrimper), "Canyons Cars & Crows" is a proper resurrection for Amps for Christ. Recorded at Equation Road in the beautiful Pomona Valley, the record upholds the band's traditions of mixing folk with hardcore and noise with music - known as folkcore and musnik, respectively - and covers familiar sonic territories from ragas and Basho folk to dirges and jigs. The songs, dire but hopeful, examine man's relationship to nature.
Henry Barnes, the force behind Amps for Christ, was a founding member of Man Is The Bastard. The group's first release was the cassette-only album "The Plains of Alluvial", released by Shrimper in 1997; since then there have been many full-length and split albums on a number of labels. Outside of Amps for Christ, Barnes has collaborated recently with Man Is the Bastard's Eric Wood on a Bastard Noise/Brutal Truth split LP on Relapse Records, a split with Bizarre Uproar, and a pair of splits with Japanese artists Outermost and Government Alpha.
