Review: Whisper it if you like, but things are rapidly reaching the stage whereby Ultimate Painting, the elegantly restrained, stylish and harmony-laden duo of Veronica Falls' James Hoare and Mazes' Jack Cooper, might be in danger of usurping their main bands. 'Dusk', their third album in as many years, showcases a melodic craftsmanship and ear for repetition that elevates this duo far above a legion of similarly Velvets and krautrock-indebted droogs. Unquantifiable grace and melodic nous are in abundance here from an outfit to satisfy even the most jaded of indie-rock palettes.

Review: This Manchester based troupe have made a name for themselves in the more traditional end of the psych scene of late, yet their sound owes just as much to the post-punk of the early-'80s as it does the lineage that follows from the Velvets through Loop - these languorous and deliriously melodious ditties bring to mind the gorgeous gloom of The Chameleons, and what one used to term 'raincoat bands' in times of yore, yet filtered through JAMC attitude and BRMC swagger. Nonetheless, the songcraft and grasp of atmospherics here show that there's more to this band than Ray-Banned and leather jacketed cool.

Review: The continuously expanding Normoton label reacts to expectations as usual with surprises being only obligated to the whims and fancies of its founder Klaus Burkard. The disregard for having to stick to one particular genre is evident in the release of the latest album from the promising new artist Uphill Racer. Following hot on the heels of Landesvatter and Pupkulies & Rebecca, Uphill Racer crosses boundaries of style and adds to the texture of the Normoton label "No Need To Laugh" is a singer songwriter album full of poetic acoustic images and frivolous hopeful hymns. Behind the curtain of understatement one seems to recognise the silhouette of Beck, Notwist, Eels or Aha. However Uphill Racer is a one man chamber orchestra who composed and played all the tracks himself. Choral riffs, deep basses, rhythm groups, strings, melotron, acoustic guitars, speech samples, frogs, cats, birds and various undefined sounds build the harmonic basis of the songs, which are formed by timeless moods and once having crept into the ears of the listener stay there. Fragile emotions in psychedelic widescreen. Uphill Racer is gifted with a keen sense of beautiful supportive melodies creates dream landscapes, places simplicity together with expressionalistic excess. As little as possible and as much as needed - Minimalistical bombast. The musician aged 25 years celebrates melancholic without Autumn, colourful and blooming. He is an exceptionally gifted arranger and if there are rules by which a catchy universal pop song should be written so that it touches something deep down then they are immaculately followed by him. "Beautiful unobtrusive vocal arrangements embellished with fleecy strings. Multilayered and therefore more warming. The discrete piano cascades sparkle like ice crystals in a window. For those who think that that's laid on a little heavy, you don't freeze that easily" Peter Flore (

Review: Meghan Remy's unique skewed and maverick vision has already been chronicled on four albums to date, yet this debut for 4AD marks the point at which she genuinely comes into her own, delivering a collection of endlessly inventive baroque pop gems that are as spiky and strange as they are sweet and addictive. Flirting deliriously with genre and style throughout, 'Half Free' is as rough around the edges as it is brimming with freewheeling creativity and inspirational glee. Yet at its centre throughout is the muse of Remy herself, almost indecently potent in most any style she turns her attention to.
