Review: Incomparable post-punk Bristolians IDLES return with their highly anticipated fifth "love album" Tangks, following on from the internal viciousness and midlife malaise of 2021's Crawler, with a collection of rough-throated, anthemic bursts of earnest gratitude. Re-uniting with exceptional hip-hop desk-man Kenny Beats, this time sharing production credits with Nigel Godrich (who's worked with the likes of Radiohead and REM) as well as the group's own eccentric former dentist-turned-crossdressing or perpetually half-naked guitarist Mark Bowen, the work exudes a creative camaraderie and sonic confidence only achieved over time through hard graft. Take one earful of disco-punk lead single 'Dancer', which features both James Murphy and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem on backing vocals, and the post-punk-positivity balance the band are striving towards on LP5 should begin to take shape. As gravel-voiced vocalist Joe Talbot summarises their latest endeavour - "Love is the fing".

In My Eyes (3:06)
Filler/Addams Family (3:28)
Review: In January 1983, Minor Threat went into Inner Ear Studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would end up being the centerpiece of what became the 'Out Of Step' 12" EP. The band had also decided to re-record the song 'Out Of Step' with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as 'Cashing In', a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once. After much debate, 'Cashing In' was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release, though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title, 'Addams Family' and then recorded new versions of 'In My Eyes' and 'Filler' to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. 'Addams Family' ended up being used as a coda to 'Cashing In', but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years until the multitrack tapes were taken into the studio to be digitised in 2021. Surprised by the discovery, Ian and Don Zientara mixed the two songs along with the complete take of 'Addams Family'. These outtakes are now released on a 7" to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of 'Out Of Step'.

Review: This is a special and unique coming together that sees Turnstile join forces with the brilliant Toronto jazz ensemble and production team BADBADNOTGOOD. They have worked on reimagining songs from the former's well-received 2021 album Glow On and the results bring all new perspectives and dynamics to tunes like 'Mystery', 'Alien love Call' featuring Blood Orange and 'Underwater Boi.' Both Turnstile and BADBADNOTGOOD are untouchable in their fields right now with rave reviews for their records as well as their live shows. This is another standout project.

Review: The iconic 1982 debut full-length from Boston hardcore punk pioneers SSD (known as SS Decontrol at the time of release) was initially only pressed to 1,000 copies with no official repress ever materialising until now, over four decades on from the fact. Originally a split-release between Dischord and X-Claim, this long-awaited repress comes courtesy of Revelation and recaptures the vicious 18-track, 21-minute project in all of its venomous, pissed off, almost thrashcore-leaning beauty. With half the cuts clocking in at under a solitary minute, The Kids Will Have Their Say is a timeless, visionary, uncompromising, pioneering, standard-setting classic that only grows more domineering and influential as the modern hardcore scene continues to expand in popularity. With no better optimum time for this reissue, mark our words that copies of this run will dry up fast before joining original pressings for criminal mark-ups on Discogs. You've been warned.

Review: Following on from their acclaimed genre-pioneering debut album Milo Goes To College in 1982, frontman Milo Aukerman of California punk heroes Descendents literally did just that, to pursue a career in biology of all things. With his bandmates touring the record without their titular vocalist and stretched between groups, especially drummer Bill Stevenson who wound up touring with Black Flag in the interim, the desire to craft a sophomore follow up was constantly at the back of their minds, and once Aukerman returned home to hear the more pop-centric direction of the new material Stevenson had been crafting, they jumped into the studio with little to no prep time to record what many regard as the first true pop-punk album - I Don't Want To Grow Up. With their earlier, raw sound slightly more polished and embracing hook-laden melodies at almost every sonic turn, mark our words when we say that there would be no Blink-182, no Millencolin and no persistent sub-genre squabbles if it wasn't for this potent and everlasting gem of a record, which also served as the first of two albums with guitarist Ray Cooper, while being their last with original bassist Tony Lombardo (who simply didn't want to tour).

Review: The US took to The Clash much more than their main rivals the Sex Pistols, not least because the latter were already imploding by the time they reached its shores. Strummer and co's regular visits to New York were always a media event - Martin Scorcese even invited them to make cameo appearanmces in his 'King of Comedy' film on one - and always accompanied by incendiary live shows. This one, recorded for radio at The Palladium in September 79, is from the relatively early part of their career, harder rocking than some although there is a reggae cover in the shape of 'Police and Thieves' even here, while mainly it's hard hitting guitar slinging anthems like 'I Fought The Law' and 'London Calling'.

Review: In December 1980, The Clash released the sprawling 36-song Sandinista! album, which marked their transition from rabble rousing guitar slingers to the genre-splitting musical experimentalists that inhabited the second part of their career. This high quality recording catches them in mid change, still including the pogo-friendly likes of 'London Calling' - the opening tune here - but also an echo chamber-drenched version of reggae-inspired original 'Bankrobber' and their hip-hop anthem 'The Magnificent Seven'.

Review: The sophomore and final studio album from punk icons X-Ray Spex. The highly sought-after album received a very limited CD-only release in 1995 on Receiver Records, and has been officially unavailable for the past 27 years. The album reunited the iconic X-Ray Spex vocalist Poly Styrene with original saxophonist Lora Logic and bassist Paul Dean, as well as guitar from Kula Shaker frontman Crispian Mills (as Red Spectre). Conscious Consumer was an upgrade of the classic debut with a same punk rock urgency and themes of consumerism, but with a poppier edge and a more considered wisdom gleamed from the ups and downs of life from the perspective of an older, wiser, Krishna devotee. This reissue includes the original and expanded artwork, as well as previously unpublished lyrics and original sleeve notes from Poly.

Review: Billed as a "love album", the fifth full-length from IDLES offers an entirely fresh batch of soulful buzzsaw anthems, aiming to take a further look inward following on from the apolitical, primarily introspective musings that permeated 2021's criminally underrated Crawler. Working with renowned hip-hop producer Kenny Beats yet again, who shares co-production credits with Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Travis, REM) and the band's very own guitar wizard Mark Bowen, the collective have distilled the vital aspects of their sonic makeup, whilst eschewing any rethreads of topical malaise they've previously exorcised to its maximum potential. One spin of the grooving dance-punk lead single 'Dancer', complete with backing vocals from James Murphy and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem, should be enough to illustrate the power of positivity brimming from these sessions, with frontman Joe Talbot's simple succinct summary of the record going as such - "Love is the fing".

Review: Women In Revolt! is a first of its kind exhibition that has been assembled to showcase the work of over 100 women artists who were active and working in the UK back throughout the 1970s and 80s. The exhibition has been put togther to explore how the women of those times changed the mood and direction of British culture then and forever more with their radical ideas and rebellious methods in the fields of music, painting, sculpture, photography, film, and performance. They helped to liberate women and this collection of punk and hardcore has been put together to reveal further layers of depth to this great cultural shift.

Review: Despite being at the centre of one of rock's tensest social media dramas in recent history - having been called out by Fat White Family for being too middle-class for their own image - Idles are back on top, thanks to their new album 'Crawler'. Taking a chance on their own criticisms, this album is more introspective than 'Ultra Mono', revealing the band's various wrestlings with addiction and desperation. In true post-punk fashion, it's an emotive sophomore development from lead brain Joe Talbot, spanning plod-rap grungers ('Car Crash') and dark disco-rock ('When The Lights Go On'), all giving off his signature brand of hopeful nihilism, with the ultimate message that 'the show must go on'.

Review: Codefendants was born out of Get Dead vocalist Sam King's graffiti crew offering tattoos and making flash art to raise money to help Ceschi Ramos whilst the rapper was incarcerated. They would eventually meet at the Gilman Street Project in Berkeley, California, and bond over a bottle of Jameson and a shared love of all things hip-hop and punk oriented. Add Fat Mike of NOFX to the mix, and you have Codefendants. The title of their debut album This Is Crime Wave comes from their self-classified genre of 'Crime Wave', but to be more specific, imagine elements of hip-hop, new wave, flamenco, and a hearty dose of the Beatles, conjured by a trio of punks and MCs.

Review: Shadowed Tales From Mulhouse captures punk's original rebels in live action in 1994, feeling like a return to their rowdy garage punk origins after spending the latter part of the 80s helping to shape goth rock and then take it overground and into the charts. No sign of 'Eloise' or 'Grimy Fiendish' here though - this all about genre-defining hits like 'Love Song', 'Neat Neat Neat', 'New Rose' and 'Smash It Up', with a heap of perfectly suited and totally unlikely cover versions, from 'Pretty Vacant' to 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'I Walk The Line'. All on nice coloured vinyl, too, it stands as a testament to The Damned's storytelling prowess, leaving audiences enthralled and craving more from this enigmatic ensemble.

Review: Blink-182 are one of the American pop-rock bands that are so closely linked with a certain time and era that hearing them takes you right back there in an instant. As much as their old albums remain favourites with fans, One More Time is another brand new work from the reunited outfit and was made by the band's classic lineup of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker. It comes after members have variously survived lymphoma and a plane crash - how that tragedy brought the band back together is touched on with the title track and lead single. A welcome return for some true rock icons.

Review: Bristolian post-punk extraordinaires IDLES make their triumphant return with a grand declaration on their "love album" Tangks. Where 2021's immense Crawler saw the gravel-voiced Joe Talbot pull back from socio-political issues in favour of a more introspective lyrical approach which examined fatherhood, drug addiction and the life-altering impact his mother's passing would have, this time around the band seek to show their massive gratitude to their family, friends, fans and the world at large that has granted them such an opportunity to pursue their passion on their own terms. While continuing their ever-expanding creative partnership with hip-hop producer Kenny Beats (who received some credits on Ultra Mono before being tapped to solely handle desk duties on Crawler), a more open and collaborative ethos has welcomed in Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, REM) as well as their own dentist/crossdresser/half-naked guitar guru Mark Bowen to help anchor a sonic undertaking that looks to run a victory lap around every audible guise IDLES have adorned thus far. From James Murphy and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem providing banging backing vocals to disco-punk lead single 'Dancer' to the jittering, muted minimalism of 'Grace', in which Talbot bellows the project's rallying cry - "Love is the fing", on album 5 the band look to finally distil their jagged, rough, endearing and motivational brand of post-punk-positivity in such a manner for all to cherish and embrace.

Review: Jazz and punk's best legacies fuse together with this latest collaborative release between The Messthetics and James Brandon. Brandon is a jazz saxophonist and contemporary virtuoso from New York; meanwhile, the Messthetics consist of former Fugazi members - bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty with guitarist Anthony Pirog. Continuing the latter's pegging as a 'jazz punk jam', the focus here is on Brandon's novel sax playing, lent to the Messthetics' cathartic, ultimate punk-riffing focus. All is instrumental, as signalled on the lead single 'Emergence', which finds pure enjoyment in variation around a singular four-by-four bass loop. In the saxophonist's own words: "The Messthetics are friends at this point and collaborating with them over the years has now brought us to another high point of musical bonding and purely unapologetic energy!"

Review: Following 'New Rose' as only the second ever single released by The Damned, 'Neat Neat Neat' has gone on to become, not only one of the band's biggest hits, but a timeless punk anthem used in everything from series like The Boys and The Simpsons, to the epic heist/chase sequence in Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, to even being covered by vastly differing acts from Elvis Costello to My Chemical Romance. This vibrantly coloured 7" captures a handful of cuts from a 1994 live performance in Mulhouse, France, boasting the aforementioned single on the A-side with a curious selection of covers on the flip, ranging from Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line' to 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' from The Righteous Brothers and even a rendition of 60s mod originals The Craig's 'I Must Be Mad' lobbed in for good measure.

Review: The Many Faces of The Sex Pistols offers a crash course in demos, deep cut and alternate versions from one of the greatest UK musical exports of all time. Across two individually coloured bits of vinyl, you'll find a bevvy of early demos recorded by their soundman (Dave Goodman), as well as live cuts and Sid Vicious solo tracks. Almost half of the included material comes from the aforementioned Dave Goodman's group The Ex Pistols (which was formed out of spite following Goodman being forced out in favour of more popular producers for the band's iconic Never Mind The Bollocks LP). Former friends, foes and collaborators appear side by side on a truly unique compilation, offering a deeper and more sprawling insight than most would dare to deliver. Complete with explanatory notes surrounding the recordings, this is a vital piece of fan memorabilia.

The band's first ever album to be made with their new drummer Atom Willard (Rocket From The Crypt, Angels & Airwaves), this is both nominally and sonically a visceral album, a veritable oozing-forth of metallic-punkish blood and guts after a bloody groundswell built up over the long silence that followed 2018's Is This Thing Cursed?.

Review: Late American rapper Lil Peep dropped his fourth mixtape on June 10, 2016, independently, but it was later added to streaming platforms in 2020 posthumously. Now it arrives on white vinyl for the first time thanks to Death Note Music and reminds us what a talent he was. Peep's raw lyricism and distinctive emo-rap style set him apart with haunting melodies and melancholic production. The record delves into themes of loneliness and despair, resonating deeply with listeners navigating the complexities of modern relationships and Peep's poignant delivery and introspective verses capture the essence of youthful anguish with bars that reverberate long after the music fades.

Review: Bristol's heavy post-punk groups Idles present their first full length album after a slew of records dating back to 2012. Brutalism collects the best of the bands antics, from vocals that shift from wailing snarls and smokey mob calls to punkish drawls, or the more spoken word and poetic emotional ballad that is album closer "Slow Savage". Guitars can thrash away or chill out melodically in the background, with the character of this album's songs striking up a familiar feeling of late-'90s punk to mid-2000s indie. Album highlights for us include "Mother", a song championing one woman's die hard working week, to the screeching, distorted anthem "Stendhal Syndrome".

Review: If you want to talk about landmark albums, how about Dookie? The third LP from a then-fresh faced but already-jaded Green Day represented a true 'moment' in the development of skate rock and punk, pre-empting the rise of pop punk. Casting a mind back to 1993, when the record hit, and memories prevail of record walls lined with t-shirts sporting the iconic artwork, and a sense that the future of guitar music would be anything but the overblown stadium mega rock that dominated much of the 1980s. Perhaps that never quite became the truth - Green Day catapulted this sound to the top of main stage festival bills in just a few years - but the raw energy, voice of generation X attitude still hits today. We could try and namecheck the highlights, but ultimately, from 'Burnout' to 'All By Myself', Dookie is the largely upbeat driving force of a very special time.

Review: Originally released in 1984 and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Initium would serve as the debut full-length from death-rock horror-punk outfit Samhain; the brainchild of Glenn Danzig (or Evil Elvis). Opting to disband Misfits in favour of redirecting his creative juices into a project he maintained more rigid control over, with the title even translating from Latin to English as "beginning", the LP marked a simultaneous embracing of more metallic, gothic rock and malevolent balladry, distancing itself from the Misfits' breakneck hardcore chaos. Arriving less than a full year after Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood, the transitional growing pains are evident with deep cut 'Archangel' being originally penned with Misfits bassist Jerry Only, while 'Horror Biz' is actually a re-worked version of the early Misfits single 'Horror Business'. Featuring Minor Threat guitarist Lyle Preslar on several tracks, along with Reagan Youth bassist Al Pike making a singular appearance, four decades on Initium continues to resonate as a vital piece of punk rock/deathrock/horror-punk history with its laying of influential foundations.

Review: Last year saw pop-punk legends Green Day headline the second instalment of the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas, following the latest resurgence of the scene and acclaimed new albums and tours from the likes of Blink-182 and Paramore. Not to be outdone (or more likely just sheer timing coincidence) the band are set to unveil their own "comeback" LP in the form of their follow up to the retro garage-pop collection Father Of All Motherfuckers which landed back in 2020. Simply titled Saviors, and promising to sonically and lyrically touch upon "power pop, punk, rock, indie triumph, disease, war, inequality, influencers, yoga retreats, alt right, dating apps, masks, MENTAL HEALTH, climate change, oligarchs, social media division, free weed, fentanyl, fragility", with a lead single boasting the mouthful 'The American Dream Is Killing Me', and Billie Joe's recent updating of the lyrics to 'American Idiot' to now denounce being part of a "MAGA agenda", it appears Mr. Armstrong and co. have some major pieces of mind to share with their avid followers and the unwashed masses at large.

Review: Where do you start with Misfits? The American punks enjoyed six incredible years following their formation in Lodi, New Jersey, and between 1977 and 1983, helping increasingly sizeable crowds throw caution to the wind work themselves into a frenzy. They also pioneered the 'horror punk' sub genre, essentially tapping into the movement's most base and fundamental elements to deliver something that was truly terrifying to the mainstream. Which, in comparison with the group themselves, could be pretty much anyone. Raw and gritty barely comes close, with Misfits tracks sound like they have been pieced together from the dismembered parts of rock & roll demons in some beaten up old garage by the side of a highway that was never completed. If that sounds like an abstract analogy, this ferocious live recording sets the record straight - a wild ride through a snarlingly good set.
