  3. Without Time (Nail remix)
Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

  3. Descendants (Juan Atkins remix) (5:51)
Review: Given his impressive credentials and track record, you'd expect any new release from former Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Los Hermanos member Esteban Adame to be rather good. Predictably, "Descendants" is rather special - a spacey, melody-rich chunk of Motor City positivity that recalls some of Underground Resistance's finest moments. Tresillo's interpretation is trippy, hypnotic and bass-heavy, with all manner of additional percussion hits and looped melody lines to catch the ear. On the flip, the mighty Juan Atkins takes the track in a completely different direction, combining Adame's spacey synths with jazz-fuelled electro beats and jammed out organ lines of his own.

Culminating in four tracks crossing genres and themes, pulling from influences and experiences throughout a history crafting his art within the Bucharest electronic music scene.

Review: Thus far, Anunnaki Cartel have only been releasing EP's, most of which have been collaborative efforts by Amir Alexander, Joey Anderson and Chris Mitchell, among others. This is their first LP and it's by Alexander himself, a man who is no mood to beat around the bush and gets his sound across right from the start of "Tight Situations". However, it's the album's slower and stranger pieces such as "A Virtuous Woman", "Love & Fear" or "A Child Is Born" which caught our attention! We'd never heard Alexander making more experimental pieces so it's refreshing to hear an artist so capable of making both hard-hitting floor music but also more docile and abstract sounds.

Artificial Sunsets (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WB 021 . Rel: 29 May 17
  1. Artificial Sunsets (5:56)
  2. The Pursuit Of Happiness (5:29)
Review: From his roots in the none stranger Brighton techno scene through to his recent re-emergence on Workshop and the like, Ibrahim Alfa has managed to stay resolutely unique despite dipping in and out of the music game over the years. Wicked Bass have turned back to his considerable catalogue of gems to give "Artificial Sunsets" a fresh outing, and highly deserved it is too. With its tightly wound, snaking beat, chirpy but off-kilter chords and loungey background licks, it's a track with a surreal atmosphere all of its own that begs to be played at the after party. "The Pursuit Of Happiness" meanwhile is a bold and brassy stomper with massive bass and enough noise to make the Landstrumm fans screw their faces up.

Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

Review: As the Dekmantel brand expands to incorporate the Selectors festival in Croatia, the Amsterdam collective still remain focused on delivering quality house and techno singles and albums. Another fine year for Dekmantel ends with the welcome arrival of Invisible Switch, a second album from US techno artist Joey Anderson. His is a unique and at times alien take on the artform, crafting percussive textures and oddly intoxicating synth lines that sound unmistakably like Joey Anderson and no others. This is very much the case with Invisible Switch, with tracks like "Reset" and "Tell Us Where" instantly gripping your attention and not letting go, whilst "Amarna" is the most bludgeoningly intense production yet from Anderson. The EOY list compilers will be kicking themselves they missed out on this one.

Review: For the first vinyl release on Sound & Object we are thrilled to have Chicago resident Area bring us the EP Forbidden Plateau. In Forbidden Plateau Area is able to create a mood of equal parts confident swagger and tentative emotion. Rich pads, loping piano melodies and robust rhythms swirl and mix to land somewhere between house and techno. The 3 original tracks - and a remix from Mikaere - create an EP that is full of space, details, bright edges and dark corners all framed by lively beats.

Synth Lord Steve Moore strips things back in a way only he can and creates an arpeggiated synth journey which you'd never tire of, even if it was 45 minutes long!

  1. Laci (10:08)
  2. Saint-Malo (8:18)
Review: Ever since the initial Supply releases, New York's Rene Audiard has been pushing his own brand of house music, never shy of adding a layer of leftfield sonics and devious atmospherics to his grooves. This time he appears courtesy of the young and vibrant The Double R label with two cavernous pieces of non-club club music. The first, "Laci", is a driving slab of eeriness, proudly pushed forward by a menacing kick drum and backed by a whole swarm of post-apocalyptic delight, while "Saint-Malo" governs the flipside with a more positive outlook on life, bringing together skippy analogue beats and a playful sort of tribalism. Moody groovers for the mind.

Review: Outsider house specialist and all-round beat deviant Rene Audiard - a young producer from NY (USA) who is part of the whole Supply/Blank Slate crew - comes in for another parallel chapter on The Double R label, this release offering an extra track to the One EP. Raising the mood and the ambience considerably, "Too Late" takes a detuned piano and chucks a heavy succession of dusty house beats beneath it - this is a truly gorgeous lil' tune - whereas "Birkut" turns up the hypnotics to the max with a bunch of heavy-loaded kicks and wavy melodies, and "Karadog" dominates the B-side with a stuttering groove made up of tight LFO sequences and a granular percussion muscle.

Ike with releases on Mister Saturday Night, Finale Sessions, Skudge and MOS and John with releases on Argot, Just Jack and Zakim. Now they turn to Ike's Episodes imprint to supply more of their upfront and dancefloor ready cuts. Starting out on the A side with the new wave acid sensibilities of "Looking Ahead" and the ferocious retro jack of "Lights Out" which are sure to set the night on fire. On the flip, the neon lit aesthetic continues with "Cosmic Divide" and "Winding Up" respectively, which conjure the ghosts from those dusty analogue machines to stunning effect.

  4. Flowing Through Time
Review: Otherwise known as one half of the Decas duo, Berlin-based Battista strikes out on his own with Records Hold Memories, an EP of thumping, raw techno tracks in the Restoration/Livejam vein, all recorded straight to tape. "From The Otherground" is all heaving kicks, a chugging angular bassline and distorted vocals buried deep in the mix; John Swing's remix meanwhile subtly flips the energy with a more rolling bassline with the kinds of loose drums that gather energy like a steam train. On the flip, "Natural Instinct" offers more unhinged 4/4, building up to a crescendo of cymbals and vocal noise; "Flowing Through Time" is even more manic, accelerating things up to 134BPM through a flurry of claps, snares and looping bass.

Review: Described in typically self deprecating manner as a 'vanity imprint in the classically ornery tradition,' the Pear Growers Series is a new label from Chris Madak, best known for his mind bendingly good output as Bee Mask. The first release sees material from Madak's excellent Spectrum Spools long player When We Were Eating Unripe Pears get treated to remixes from celebrated techno artists Surgeon and Abdulla Rashim. Anyone who has heard Surgeon playing the remix on his Rinse FM show will agree that his unashamedly emotive breakbeat reworking of "The Story Of Keys & Locks" is arguably one of the simplest and most affecting remixes this year. Complementing this, Prologue and Semantica artist Abdulla Rashim delivers a take on "Unripe Pears" that will resonate with anyone that has indulged in the elusive producer's recent output on his own eponymous label.

Review: In just three years Ali Renault's Vivod label has managed to release a staggering amount of music from rule-breaking disco mavericks, and so it continues unabated on this new slab from William Bendix and Lewis J Force. The former comes leaping into earshot with the splattering robo-boogie of "Dallas" in all its chaotic glory before switching stance with the dazzling synth glare of "Centurion". Lucky Koi is also on hand to take "Dallas" to task and does so to great, mutant breakbeat effect. On the flip Lewis J Force whips up a bouncy acidic storm with "Folkestone Nightclub", only for Parasols to come bowling in and dismember it in a most sonically gruesome of ways.

Spacejam provides an EP of demented drums, fiddling electronics and refreshing originality, showcasing the signature sound of the studio-obsessed Scottish born DJ and producer. His idiosyncratic style runs through the three tracks here, from the space jack and Green Velvet-inspired vocals of the title track, through the rubbery funk of "No I Didn't" and frenetic acid of "Oist Mal".

Review: UK techno stalwart Steve Bicknell's Lost Recordings series must be one of the longest running in dance music; the Lost and Cosmic founder has been putting out previous unheard material from his early '90s heyday on and off since 2004. There are few surprises on this 10th edition, but plenty of slamming, no-holds-barred grooves. The hissing, spacey, cymbal-heavy "Track 3" is particularly trippy, while there's a gnarled, ragged intensity about the pulsating heaviness of "Track 1". Arguably best of all, though - ambient interlude "Track 2" aside - is "Track 4", an eerie techno shuffler built around a wonky, off-key electric piano loop and fizzing percussion.

Review: "The Links EP is Blackhall & Bookless' latest outing for their increasingly renowned Jaunt Records imprint. A highly personal release, the EP is a homely affair, celebrating the boys' upbringing in Whitley Bay with a gusto that's indicative of the area's unique charm. "Links" serves up a dreamy, atmospheric landscape - and one that reflects the location around which the EP is titled. Don Williams' interpretation goes down the rabbit hole further still, teasing the listener thanks to a range of slashing echo chords and clever sub bass techniques. The duo's second original is "Vision", aAdark techno jam that manifests into a stunning tribal hypnodrome.AClosing out the EP is "Cognition", another highly atmospheric track that keeps the listener locked thanks to its many dexterous capabilities. The striking artwork, meanwhile, showcases a black and white image of where the pair would hang out as teenagers. In that essence, the image echoes their production style, with the two sides of the links joining at the bridge and working together in unison. JR004Ais dedicated in loving memory to Ian Blackhall."
