Review: For its 5th release Flyance Records highlights the Japanese artist Imugem Orihasam. The EP features four deep and dark tracks which remain within Flyance Records' universe. Keeping with an ambient and visual vibe, Imugem revives with the club energy of his famous "Relation EP" (Sistrum Rec.) and Ilian Tape EPs. With this new issue, Paris-based Flyance Records further confirms its ambition to blur boundaries between deep house and techno. Mastered by Optimum

  1. Presence - "Geria"

  4. Presence - "Battlecry" (NGLY rework)
Review: Describing themselves as a "coterie of creative individuals who draw their influence from varied cross-section of Electronic music's heritage", the Tokyo Wax label are evidently as passionate about techno as they are verbose on the basis of this debut release. Label heads Presence and Persona inaugurate proceedings with a triplet of productions that draw on all facets of their sound, spanning spacious, loose-limbed headphone pieces and tough, floor-focused club tracks. The tough Uk flex of "XXXII" is our personal favourite. Berlin-based LIES and CCCP affiliate NGLY adds further grit on a fine electro revision of "Battlecry". TW001 was funded by a Kickstarter campaign with all proceeds from record sales going towards the U.K based Addison's Disease Self Help Group.

  3. The Man From Another Place (Timothy J Fairplay remix)
  4. The Man From Another Place (Cottam remix)
Review: Hailing from sunny Los Angeles, Plastic Love Records kicks off our first release with an EP from label co-boss Jimmy Maheras. Maheras made his debut in 2011 with his Space Jam EP on the Crosstown Rebels edit sub-label, Rebellion. Since then he's released remixes and singles on Strainjjur, Riff Raff, Supernature, and Left'd.

Maheras's two original tracks showcase his depth with The Man From Another Place being squarely aimed at the big room dance floor and the second track, Arecibo, bringing a little Kraftwerkesque funk. We've commissioned Timothy J Fairplay (Crimes Of The Future) and Cottam (Aus Music / Ruff Draft) for two very unique remixes. Fairplay crunches down the original melody and throws it over the famed amen break to give TMFAP a hands in air late night feel while Cottam's remix brings the dreamy melody closer to acid with storming late night kick ready to knock down a wall.

Review: 'White of the Eye' is the first release under "Nothing but Blood" from Scott Fraser, a direct link back to Scott's earlier 90's work and sound around the darker realms of techno and harder-edged Chicago house. The EP title refers back to a favourite Donald Cammell film of Scott's from 88'. 'White of the Eye' on the A-side is an 11 minute extended mix of the lead cut. Silent Servant on remix duties delivers an amyl fuelled techno bomb landing somewhere in an 80's new york basement. Diving deeper on B2 it features Atlanta resident Claire Elise Tippins on vocals.

Review: Stephane Lefrancois & Jameson Gilvarry team up for the latest 12" from the Secret Music label and find inspiration from a canine icon of space travel. "Laika" is named in honour of the first cosmonaut dog, depicted here on the cover art and Lefrancois and Gilvarry convey her journey through an uplifting, rolling techno cut that doesn't seem to stop building. Complementing the original is a remix from Dantiez Saunderson who strips down the groove, while giving it a swung, offbeat feel. Staying true to the original, this version also introduces another layer of melodic synths, extending the journey, making it deeper and moody. The booming, clean low end and bouncy high end keep the groove propelling forward.

Review: Klasse Wrecks welcomes Bristol-based Marco Bernardi to its ranks following strong releases for Clone, Delsin, Rawax, Planet E, and most recently the Kelly Twins' Happy Skull label. Spacejam provides an EP of demented drums, fiddling electronics and refreshing originality, showcasing the signature sound of the studio-obsessed Scottish born DJ and producer. His idiosyncratic style runs through the three tracks here, from the space jack and Green Velvet-inspired vocals of the title track, through the rubbery funk of "No I Didn't" and frenetic acid of "Oist Mal".

Review: Hot on the heels of his inaugural release in January, Braiden introduces Slewis, a new producer on his emerging Off Out label. After years of honing his craft in the studio and playing in experimental bands, London born Slewis makes his mark on his debut with two equally bold dancefloor cuts. Group V opens with an extended twisting cacophony of synthesizers before breaking down into metallic driving machine funk. On the flip, Despot delves deeper down the rabbit hole as EBM influenced sounds and syncopated claps dance around a bed of paranoia, leading to a tense breakdown populated by a flurry of spasmodic drums.

  5. Cory James - "Superstition Mtn"
  6. Cory James - "Molasses"
Review: The concept of Dusk Notes is to cater to both the dancefloor and the introspective listener. Founded by Cory James, an NYC local and one half of Brooklyn techno duo Point Break, and Soramimi, a more experimentally inclined producer, the label aims to focus on the spectral and the subconscious.

Soramimi introduces this label with three heady and churning pieces. "Bask Under a Dying Sun" explores fervent imagery with ambient gravity. "Saturn's Interludes" continues this otherworldly abstraction with breathy vigor. Lastly is "Zodiac", with gravelly synths stirring tidal motion, which concludes Side A.

Side B comes from Cory James , a collection of three jolting and palpitating songs. "Stairs" knocks away with shuffling strikes and celestial tonality. "Superstition Mtn" follows with a galvanized collision of shuddering rhythm. "Molasses" completes the release, descending into radiating bass and unearthly keys.

Review: Jesse Somfay's diversions into sound design and abstract techno take on a decidedly tangible form with this latest 12", heralding the start of the Anatomy label in fine style. "Fizzmint" is a captivating track that moves with the pace and precision of a peak time techno banger, but feels like an ambient tour into Eastern-inflected sound sources that merge into an overall haunting murmur. Coupled with the insistent kick drum it's something of a transcendental piece. Lakker are in an equally captivating mood on the flipside, remixing the original into a slower, more broken stalker bolstered by gaseous bass pulses and deliberately avoiding any heavy drums.

Review: Quite how this 12" on FXHE from the unheralded Tom Bugs came about isn't clear, though we'd like to think Omar S got chatting to the Bristol based producer and builder of Modular synths over a pint of Guinness in a Stokes Croft pub before a gig. Whilst few people would fancy the unenviable task of following up the huge recent LP from Omar S, Bugs shows enough ingenuity on this Living Leaving 12" to make him a perfect fit for FXHE. Nestling in at the dubby end of the FXHE spectrum, like a sleepy eyed Luke Hess, both parts of "Living Leaving" demonstrate that Bugs mastery of obvious modular synths is also blessed with an innate understanding of lo-fi melodics. Indeed there's a freeform sense to how they unfurl which hints that Bugs committed these straight to tape. Another fine FXHE transmission!

Review: UK techno stalwart Steve Bicknell's Lost Recordings series must be one of the longest running in dance music; the Lost and Cosmic founder has been putting out previous unheard material from his early '90s heyday on and off since 2004. There are few surprises on this 10th edition, but plenty of slamming, no-holds-barred grooves. The hissing, spacey, cymbal-heavy "Track 3" is particularly trippy, while there's a gnarled, ragged intensity about the pulsating heaviness of "Track 1". Arguably best of all, though - ambient interlude "Track 2" aside - is "Track 4", an eerie techno shuffler built around a wonky, off-key electric piano loop and fizzing percussion.

This time he teamed up with d_func. aka legendary Berlin producer Alexander Kowalski who has been around for almost 20 years and surely needs no further introduction. The title track is a slow piece of nautical Techno aiming at the bigger floors. Review: Schmorgasbord Records continues to examine the creative results of collaborative experimentation within contemporary electronic music, following releases from Appleblim & October, Spatial & S-Max, Al Tourettes & Paradroid and Bass Clef & Frak.

Pev is one of the leading lights of the fertile Bristol music scene, responsible for the hugely influential Punch Drunk and Livity Sound labels, as well as numerous releases on Tectonic, Skull Disco, Hessle Audio and The Trilogy Tapes.

Steevio is the co-founder of Mindtours Records and the Freerotation electronic music festival. His live improvised techno performances on modular synthesisers have been witnessed in Berghain in Berlin, Concrete in Paris, Corsica Studios in London and many more besides.

The two artists created original tracks and then remixed / reinterpreted each others work resulting in truly unique tracks neither artist would have conjured up otherwise.

Largely coated in classic acid house references, there are plenty of surprises on offer to keep you on your toes. The title track is especially interesting; rolling with a Pierre style acid and bounce-bass technique, it quickly morphs into an infectious p-funk hybrid before hitting some seriously spiky high notes. Looking for Maurice-style acid stomp session? Then flip for "Woke" and turn those lights off.

Review: Otherwise known as one half of the Decas duo, Berlin-based Battista strikes out on his own with Records Hold Memories, an EP of thumping, raw techno tracks in the Restoration/Livejam vein, all recorded straight to tape. "From The Otherground" is all heaving kicks, a chugging angular bassline and distorted vocals buried deep in the mix; John Swing's remix meanwhile subtly flips the energy with a more rolling bassline with the kinds of loose drums that gather energy like a steam train. On the flip, "Natural Instinct" offers more unhinged 4/4, building up to a crescendo of cymbals and vocal noise; "Flowing Through Time" is even more manic, accelerating things up to 134BPM through a flurry of claps, snares and looping bass.

Review: From the early days Frozen Border have made a name for their linear take on stripped back techno, but in recent years they've filled their boots with bigger beats, atmospheric tensions and distortion. None more so than this release by the so far unknown artist (as you'd expect from Frozen Border) Oxcure. No track on here has a decipherable beat, with the closest hint coming via the machine-gun staccato hits of "Repulse". A Reconstruction of "Burning Faith" sounds like a funeral march soundtracked by DJ Spider's Spider Bites alias, while appropriately Violent Poison remixes the track "Mind Turns Violent", making sure it remains in the lurch of heavy smog and sonic decay.

Picking up where Xylophone left off 'Unconnected thoughts on jacking' is four tracks of naive melodies, rough slamjack drums, and new age atmospheres. Review: To date, cult 'working man's techno' label White Material has given Young Male, DJ Richard, and Galcher Lustwerk the chance to shine on their own 12" but they've long promised to provide a platform for further members of the collective to show what they are capable of. Having previously contributed one of the tracks on the fourth White Material release, Morgan Louis steps up to deliver his formal debut which features four productions and three B-side loops. While undeniably deep, the EP touches on a number of techno styles, from the melodious, atmospheric and metronomic title track, to the paranoid creepiness and rolling rhythms of "Donnoo". Arguably best of all, though, is "3Sex", a chunk of almost claustrophobic minimal techno full of barely audible voices and dusty textures.

Review: There's much to admire about this debut EP from Modern Obscure, the new label from sometime Hivern Discs contributor Pettre (here recording under the similarly fresh Pedro Vian alias). There's the loose, dreamy melancholy of Pettre's new age tinged deep house original, and a typically brutal, all-out acid assault from Jamal Moss, whose The Hieroglyphic Being Experience II rework is akin to being brutally smashed round the chops with a lead-clad 303. Best of all, though, is Madteo's No hay Nada En El Futuro Remix (literal translation: "there is nothing in the future"), which winds its way through three distinct, heart-aching movements across 15 spellbinding minutes.

Review: REPRESS ALERT! Kashawar steps back into the fold for Autoreply's 17th release, following the rising German producer's breakout releases for underground imprints Project London and Soul.on Records. For his Autoreply debut, Kashawar presents Moments and Lost Memories (Parts 1 & 2) which covers all bases of his production palette. With collaborations with Steve O'Sullivan on Mosiac plus Pluie/Noir appearances approaching, it's clear Kashawar is a special young talent!

Review: 18 months after Perseus Traxx brought Flight Recorder his first E.P, dedicated to four of the nine Muses of ancient Greece, the label now ushers in the second instalment dedicated to four more Muses, on Goddesses Of Inspiration II. The feel is the same as before with jagged cutting tones jammed live then edited down. Heavy synths and scattered drums perform an ode characterising the appropriate Muses, as tangled wires and a pair of hands wrench the overload of inspiration they give from basic machines. Once again Perseus' release on Flight Recorder is a unique set of acid-free sonic experiments, that sometimes feel as cold and edgy, as they do warm and carefree.

Review: The ethos of M.I.L has always been to play the role of adventurer, to push forward the sounds that veer away from the main label Music is Love and M2222 pushes the envelope to the furthest boundary so far.
Kastil steps up for the 5th release on the vinyl only label with a divine techno ep. Etrek kicks off the proceedings with a kick drum solid enough to shake the bones of anyone in 100 meters of it. With its eerie analogue blips and noises the atmosphere this track emits is so intriguing you yearn for all its beautifully produced twists and turns. The main riff played against the surging drum section will make this track a timeless tool for techno & house djs alike.
Warning follows up with a warmer palette but still with plenty of drive and urgency, the delightfully playful lead wanders rounds your ears and conscious as the drum machines bang the groove, a perfect track to induce those euphoric moments in your dj sets.
Collapse is an all out weapon of mass destruction, with its un forgiving lead synth slowly but surely gaining more aggression and destruction as the drums build perfectly around the intensity, until it drops and your left immersed in this brute of a groove. It's the eb and flow of this track using tension and release that really bring this monster to life.
Dermax closes the ep and in fine style, once again flipping the techno stance of the ep into a deep druggy affair. The movement of the elements dancing around your head as you get lost in the dubby undertone of this track sit so perfectly in the sonic range, the depth and character of this track makes this a perfect track to end such a inventful and cleverly producer 4 tracker, this ep has every right to put WARNING on the label.

Review: Nik Dawson adds to his growing profile with this killer induction on Barcelona label Anomia under his club focused DJ Bookworms moniker. Currently half of the sprawling hardware experimentalist project Confused House alongside Jason Letkiewicz, Dawson's two releases on LIES are amongst our favourites here at Juno HQ but the Mechanism 12" might just challenge that. Recorded live to tape in NYC with "a Roland 606, 808, and Alpha Juno 1? the three tracks here find Dawson in quite confrontational mood, most notably on the unhinged title track that always seems on the verge of complete malfunction. It's little surprise when the arrangement completely chews itself up towards the end.
