Review: The original Adventures in Techno Soul compilation was released back in 1996 with remixes of Ferox tracks from the likes of Derrick Carter, Carl Craig and Kenny Dixon Jr. A full 16 year's after its follow up "Further Adventures in Techno Soul" comes this 8 track album of new and unreleased material on double vinyl from 8 different and exciting artists. Ferox is proud to welcome established and respected producers such as Fred P and Germany's Move D to the roster, as well as a welcome return from Affie Yusuf, Nebraska and Bush Funk (Steve O'Sullivan and Winlord X) who were last seen on Soma Records back in 1996. The label is also proud to introduce two new artists, Darren Harris and Spain's Hoax Believers who alongside label boss Russ Gabriel round off this package of soulful electronica. This album is not available as a digital release.

  1. The Story Of Keys & Locks (Surgeon remix)

Review: Described in typically self deprecating manner as a 'vanity imprint in the classically ornery tradition,' the Pear Growers Series is a new label from Chris Madak, best known for his mind bendingly good output as Bee Mask. The first release sees material from Madak's excellent Spectrum Spools long player When We Were Eating Unripe Pears get treated to remixes from celebrated techno artists Surgeon and Abdulla Rashim. Anyone who has heard Surgeon playing the remix on his Rinse FM show will agree that his unashamedly emotive breakbeat reworking of "The Story Of Keys & Locks" is arguably one of the simplest and most affecting remixes this year. Complementing this, Prologue and Semantica artist Abdulla Rashim delivers a take on "Unripe Pears" that will resonate with anyone that has indulged in the elusive producer's recent output on his own eponymous label.

Review: Acclaimed for many of his compositions on labels such as Aesthetic Audio, ART, Ornate, alongside his blistering DJ performances. AER boss Miles drops the label's first and his debut album. Deep is a word often used to describe a lot of music currently out there, but not many touch the depths of this superb LP on Atmospheric Existence. Miles touches on many shades of sound with his trademark emotive warmth. Melancholy but positive vibrations flow out alongside abstract grooves. Hypnotic elements grace the journey, creating an otherworldy sense of space and distant unknown entities. Feeling & mood leap out of this LP at every twist and unexpected turn, circumnavigating the deep spectrum. Since his early releases, his imprint AER has become a highly respected imprint globally with a dedicated following. This LP was constructed to stand the test of time and stand it does, firmly rooted in the Cosmos.

Review: For those who caught Furness' Four 4 The Floor EP, and are familiar with his work, this release is further evidence of how much of a fledgling purveyor of deep grooves and heavy-hitting rhythms Furness is. Title track Gone Fishing utilises string keys as the foundation of the track and marries the emotive, elongated synths with a dubby bassline and quick hitting snares. Acropolis is tougher, centering distorted pads against intermittent piano chords, muffled vocal grabs and a deep, cosmic bassline. Red808 is a no-nonsense roller, with its slick snare and hi-hat/hand-clap tandem working superbly against the climbing synths. Blackstar adopts a similar framework to Acropolis, wrapping up the EP in style with its similarly lo-fi, distorted percussion charged against rapturous chords taking the track into further sonic terrain.

Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

This record has a totally different vibe compared to the labels first release with a much heavier techno roll. "Mattur" is a good example of this, whilst "Inter" finds Jamie Haus on a much darker, dub vibe. "Meiose" Is packed with a fantastic rolling kick with atmospheric noises in the back, whilst the Groovesh remix comes with that brilliant Romanian touch that everyone is asking for.

Review: UK techno stalwart Steve Bicknell's Lost Recordings series must be one of the longest running in dance music; the Lost and Cosmic founder has been putting out previous unheard material from his early '90s heyday on and off since 2004. There are few surprises on this 10th edition, but plenty of slamming, no-holds-barred grooves. The hissing, spacey, cymbal-heavy "Track 3" is particularly trippy, while there's a gnarled, ragged intensity about the pulsating heaviness of "Track 1". Arguably best of all, though - ambient interlude "Track 2" aside - is "Track 4", an eerie techno shuffler built around a wonky, off-key electric piano loop and fizzing percussion.

After a few years break, the label is back with a bang, celebrating its tenth release with a bumper double pack featuring some big hitters. 5. Mark Forshaw - "Submission"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Contort Yourself has once again gathered the best and boldest from past and present for its fourth EP. To begin with we have the grimacing visage of Volition Immanent, an intense live act made up of Parrish Smith and Mark Van de Maat (Knekelhuis). Behind rawkish distortion, splintered beats and acrid bars screams a boiled anger; a track spitting on the divides of punk and electronics. Nastiness is taken up a notch as noise ne'er-do-wells Zombies Under Stress take over. Static is bent and doubled across thick chords and collapsed clap in the 1986 "Maan Zal Zijn" before the raw and raging battery of "In Onze Tijd." L.I.E.S. regular Svengalisghost grapples with "Maan Zal Zijn, channelling the original's rage into a mechanical monster. The 12" is bookended with bite as Mark Forshaw (Tabernacle/Berceuse Heroique) closes with the tortured and torrential thump of "Submission." A callous, caustic and fervently cruel EP.

Review: These days, Detroit deep house veteran Keith Worthy can't seem to decide whether to use his given name or the alternative Lamar alias. Here he's in full K-Worthy mode, delivering a belated debut album chock full of sci-fi influenced deep house, Motor City dancefloor soul and evocative, heavily electronic club jams. Worthy is a fine producer with a great knack for balancing the demands of the dancefloor with his love of atmosphere, texture and melody. This trait courses through the heat of K Dub Music, which simply ripples with quality from start to finish. Highlights are plentiful, from the deep, melodious techno warmth of "Karma ($ of NC Mix)", to the off-kilter rhythms, sci-fi sounds and fizzing cymbals of "Deeptroit".

Spacejam provides an EP of demented drums, fiddling electronics and refreshing originality, showcasing the signature sound of the studio-obsessed Scottish born DJ and producer. His idiosyncratic style runs through the three tracks here, from the space jack and Green Velvet-inspired vocals of the title track, through the rubbery funk of "No I Didn't" and frenetic acid of "Oist Mal".

"When people on our planet hold built up psychic tensions under the skin, the energy gestates in a womb-like growth until it's ready to burst through the flesh manifest as a creature called a Gyrocyre. Many people opt out of ever letting the beast emerge, happy to function at levels they can predict without having to face the challenge brought on by the Gyrocyre. It grows heavy and bloated with untapped potential. Those who embrace the change slice through the flesh and let it out. It fuses with the host, covering his or her skin like a mask. Depending on the nature of their heart, it gives them tools to save or destroy the world. We invite you to embrace the change and let your Gyrocyre out."

Review: Schmorgasbord Records continues to examine the creative results of collaborative experimentation within contemporary electronic music, following releases from Appleblim & October, Spatial & S-Max, Al Tourettes & Paradroid and Bass Clef & Frak.

Pev is one of the leading lights of the fertile Bristol music scene, responsible for the hugely influential Punch Drunk and Livity Sound labels, as well as numerous releases on Tectonic, Skull Disco, Hessle Audio and The Trilogy Tapes.

Steevio is the co-founder of Mindtours Records and the Freerotation electronic music festival. His live improvised techno performances on modular synthesisers have been witnessed in Berghain in Berlin, Concrete in Paris, Corsica Studios in London and many more besides.

The two artists created original tracks and then remixed / reinterpreted each others work resulting in truly unique tracks neither artist would have conjured up otherwise.

Review: Always a prolific force operating on his own terms, Stephen Laubner makes his first appearance of 2017 with a release on the ever-growing Untold Stories label. Renbual Nahpets finds Laubner in a dubby frame of mind, especially on lead track "Sunny Park Chill" which sports some of his trademark grainy techno chords lingering in space surrounded by field recordings and subtle ripples of rhythm. "The Mountain Dub" meanwhile whips up a taut, rugged house groove with shimmering delays on the synth tones that only STL could be responsible for. Cleymoore uses the B side to lay out a remix of the latter track, turning it into a long and winding minimal track thick with detail.

Review: After a recent excellent outing on the Jealous God label, In Aeternam Vale returns for Minimal Wave duty with the Gnd Lift 12". The long running project of Lyon artist Laurent Prot, the 12" focussed archival transmissions on Minimal Wave tend to be some of the label's best releases and that is certainly the case here. Lead track "Gnd Lift" weighs in at a mighty 14 minutes and is up there with "Dust Under Brightness" in our favourite IA V mind benders; serious slowed down murky proto techno vibes! Complementing this J'ai Mange Des Nerfs" echoes some of Prot's earlier wave-based experiments and "Animals Don't Mind" is the epitome of foreboding primitive electronics. Pressed on 160 gram clear transparent deep purple vinyl and housed in another excellent sleeve from Veronica Vasicka.

The legendary Detroit artist is more commonly spotted as DJ T-1000 (or designing iconic artwork for techno labels) but this time around he's sharing some more house-minded delights for Finale Sessions. "Don't Take Me" is a haunting, mystical slice of deep house that fits into the Finale narrative perfectly, while "Wild" too offers up a distinctive approach that manages to be both refined and yet imbued with that Detroit roughness. "Breathe" may well be the best jam on the record, dealing in subtle threads of melody that conjure up the perfect dubby 4/4 confection.

Fans of the Kimochi label will recognise Lubin from the two wonderful 12"s he's committed to the cause over the past three years, and this four-track Future Laboratories record is a fine addition to his small discography. "Flooring Operations" opens proceedings on a dizzying techno tip, a kaleidoscope of sound billowing up around the taut bass drums, whilst "Mediation Garden" will please those who like some sonic grit in the mix. By contrast, the excellently titled "Ambivalent Robot" veers off into insouciant, glistening techno and is quite life-affirming. "Chloroform" rounds out the 12" on a similarly warm tip.

OCH's second contribution is "Freeze-Thaw" showcasing a deep, hypnotic groove alongside powerful sub-bass, lush female vox with dreamy analogue pads that bridge the gap between artistic creativity and memorable club versatility. On the flip side it's Romanian all-rounder, The Model, who has previously graced premium labels such as Traum Schallplatten and International DJ Gigolo. Here he delivers two ultra-phat workouts in the form of "Dungeon Man", an infectious chord driven floor-burner and "Stancuto" a stripped back, percussive take on the same theme demonstrating his emerging new warehouse sound with just the slightest salute to Echocord or Dehnert.

  5. TJ Dumas & Raybone Jones - "Runnin 2 U"
  6. Rick & Calvin - "Memories Analia"
  7. Orlando Voorn - "The Recipe"
  8. K-Alexi - "Head Banger"
Review: Vibes New & Rare Music 2 reaches it's conclusion here as Rush Hour drop the second and final double vinyl helping of the Rick Wilhite curated compilation with a suitably high profile cast of contributors involved. If you checked Part One which dropped earlier this year, you'll know Wilhite has expanded the remit to include producers from Chicago and New York - and if you didn't check it what's wrong with you! Any compilation that starts with an exclusive cut from Moodymann is gonna be good, and the dusty, disjointed "Momma" sets the tone quality wise for what follows. The Godson himself delivers a thunderous, stripped back take on "A Matter of Honour" by Sean Tate and this dukes it out with the apocalyptic electro of DJ Stingray and the rugged beatdown of Orlando Voorn as our favourites from this great collection.

Review: 'White of the Eye' is the first release under "Nothing but Blood" from Scott Fraser, a direct link back to Scott's earlier 90's work and sound around the darker realms of techno and harder-edged Chicago house. The EP title refers back to a favourite Donald Cammell film of Scott's from 88'. 'White of the Eye' on the A-side is an 11 minute extended mix of the lead cut. Silent Servant on remix duties delivers an amyl fuelled techno bomb landing somewhere in an 80's new york basement. Diving deeper on B2 it features Atlanta resident Claire Elise Tippins on vocals.

Review: The Peer Pressure EP from the under-rated Mark Forshaw finds Scenery Records once again highlighting the rich strain of local production talent in the Liverpool area. Involved in the Merseyside scene since the '90s, Forshaw has released on labels like Mathematics, Tabernacle and Apartment and is also a member of Phantom Planet Outlaws with John Heckle and Binny. If you've checked Forshaw's prior output you will be happy with Peer Pressure as soon as the grubby, jacked up house of the title track hits its groove, with his four other cuts heading down a similarly unpredictable path. Kudos to Scenery for seeking out Swedish producer Daniel Andreasson to remix the title track too! This is another no nonsense EP from Scenery that is lovably rugged and unpredictably creative.

Review: After their last release under the labels Ornate Music (UK) and Finale Sessions (US), Ka One & St-Sene are back with a special Flyance Records release. REWORK: the action of redoing, correcting or rebuilding"; that is the spirit they put in this Ep with those four House music anthems of those consider today as the father figures of this music. Without sampling, replaying all the keyboards and arpeggio, they turned thoses anthems into modern acid and techno vibe. From 1989 to 2015 Ka One & St-Sene give great tribute at Lil Louis, Mr Fingers, Kerri Chandler and Laurent Garnier.

Review: For the fifth release on her Return To Disorder label, Helena Hauff has turned to Hamburg duo Fallbeil. Known for their trippy, analogue-heavy take on techno and electro, the twosome has previously impressed via appearances on Contort Yourself and New York Haunted. Ultima Ratio is another solid selection, with Fallbeil variously exploring distorted, industrial-influenced techno (the post-apocalyptic paranoia of "Secret Codes"), mind-altering electro-acid (the Cabaret Voltaire-meets-Phuture moodiness of "Kontrolled Madness", and straight-up acid business (the hard-edged TB-303 lines and skittish TR-808 style beats of "Orontius"). All three tracks are blessed with that sparse-but-heavy feel that's quickly becoming the duo's trademark.

Review: Very cool ep from Skatebard on Vivod ! A mixed bag from the prolific Norwegian producer showing us why he's still at the top of his game. "Maskindans" kicks things off with some speak & spell funk followed by "Hissige Helger", a brooding Chicago-style banger sure to tear up some discoteques across the planet. On the flip are "Langbolgen" and "Gloymde Skogar". The former is an acid style work out, the latter is more of a subtle, hypnotyizing opus. All very strong tracks. Don't sleep on this. They will go fast !

Review: Crimes Of The Future is the kind of label you can trust, no matter who is at the controls. The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.

Review: "The Links EP is Blackhall & Bookless' latest outing for their increasingly renowned Jaunt Records imprint. A highly personal release, the EP is a homely affair, celebrating the boys' upbringing in Whitley Bay with a gusto that's indicative of the area's unique charm. "Links" serves up a dreamy, atmospheric landscape - and one that reflects the location around which the EP is titled. Don Williams' interpretation goes down the rabbit hole further still, teasing the listener thanks to a range of slashing echo chords and clever sub bass techniques. The duo's second original is "Vision", aAdark techno jam that manifests into a stunning tribal hypnodrome.AClosing out the EP is "Cognition", another highly atmospheric track that keeps the listener locked thanks to its many dexterous capabilities. The striking artwork, meanwhile, showcases a black and white image of where the pair would hang out as teenagers. In that essence, the image echoes their production style, with the two sides of the links joining at the bridge and working together in unison. JR004Ais dedicated in loving memory to Ian Blackhall."

Review: After a quiet 2016 thus far Och's Autoreply label is finally back in action with a frankly fantastic selection of workouts from Mark Broom. In keeping with the style Broom has been exercising in new Perbec jams with Baby Ford, this is more restrained than the muscular techno Broom can also be known for. Instead, you get expressive, satisfying house tracks such as "18.2" and the neatly pumping "10" with its killer array of synths to satisfy the dancefloor and the mind in equal measure. Avoiding unnecessary fireworks in favour of perfectly chosen and shaped elements, this is a glittering demonstration of Broom's cool-headed approach in the studio.

Review: Finale Sessions is excited about this release from Knoxville, Tennessee artist Alex Falk. He has been on our radar for some time now so we are pleased to share this with you! The A1 track "An Ever" is one of our favorite tracks on the EP, with dreamy pads and monstrous stabs making for a fantastic floor-stomper. Rounding out the A side is "Rrecs", a deep Techno cut with clattering chords and moving drums and claps. B1 track "What Is Free" is another solid peak time killer with thick stabs and cut-up vocals making for a perfect Finale Sessions release. Finally, "BR56" brings up the tempo while chilling out the vibe with dubbed-out chords, nasty filter work and a sound floating somewhere between Techno and House.

Review: Helena Hauff's A Tape first appeared on cassette back in 2015, winning praise from critics for its machine-driven fusion of EBM, industrial, acid and dark-wave elements. The set showcased tracks recorded over a three-year period, mostly with a stripped back studio set-up (TB-303, TR-797, TR-808 and a couple of Roland synths), which didn't make the cut for her Werk Discs debut, Discreet Desires. Now, Dark Entries has decided to issue the album on vinyl for the first time, allowing those of us without tape decks to revel in Hauff's off-kilter machine funk, intoxicating electronic soundscapes, and acid-flecked, late night workouts.

Review: During 1993 and 1994, between shifts at Selectadisc, blagging studio time from DiY and looking for a new girlfriend, Nail spent time at home with some borrowed equipment; a TR-808, TB-303, Boss delay pedal and a knackered spring reverb, plus his own Korg MS10. Recording live & straight to cassette, these acid-soaked sessions were given the name 'Sentipede', after a friend at the time saying one of the tracks made them feel like they were being eaten alive by a giant creepy-crawly with lots of legs.
Selected from four D90 cassettes full of tracks, 99:WAVE presents the imaginatively titled "ONE", with just 8 tracks over two slabs of grey vinyl.

Review: Presented in 5mm spine, LTD edition full-artwork colour sleeve which fits Parts 1-3. Having scored on Mosiac, Bodyparts and Project London, Kashawar returns to Autoreply to complete his critically acclaimed "Moments & Lost Memories" series. Here the young German star steps up with "Time Cures" a hook driven weapon possibly paying a slower respect to Mill's "Purpose Maker" releases. MPC style swing infects the groove on "Rise and Shine" adding soothing vocals and subtle acid lines to Side A. Flip the disc for deep, funking atmospherics on "Knotting" and "Spheres" adds some of Kashawar's early morning dub magic to the package. Look out for repressed Parts 1 & 2 to complete your collection!

Review: Echo 106 member Bruno Schnuriger goes solo as Francis Juno for Platform Romance, an album shaped synth odyssey for the Mystic & Quantum label, issued on limited white marbled vinyl LP in silk-screen printed sleeve. Very much in line stylistically with previous transmissions on the label, Platform Romance finds Schnuriger channelling all manner of influences through his array of hardware resulting in eight tracks that sounds wholly cohesive despite touching on kosmiche, primitive electronics, acid and electro. It's a great listen from start to finish and there are plenty of cuts you'd want to slam into a mix too, specifically the delightful opener "A Little Bit Of Joy" and "Trains Don't Stop In Brunnen".
