Review: Valcrond Video presents the next work by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt, Songs From Bad Kid School.

On a high desert plain, inside a cinder block compound, a prank squad is incarcerated. Between fiddling with ninja stars and leafing through back issues of Fangoria, they find time to scrape out the soundtrack of their escape.
On the first track, heatsick guitars and steel wool beats suggest a landscape strewn with abandoned car carcasses, old Camaros left for dead in the sun, used for shotgun practice.

The B-side leads off with the beat-less, articulated sprawl of "Saline Flats". Here is the story of a desert search for water: figures warping mirage-like on the horizon as they make a confused journey over dunes, ending with a cathartic drone that suggests the mirages resolving into a real oasis. Though it is just as likely that the bad kids have expired from thirst, and ascended to the sublime.

Review: Jesse Somfay's diversions into sound design and abstract techno take on a decidedly tangible form with this latest 12", heralding the start of the Anatomy label in fine style. "Fizzmint" is a captivating track that moves with the pace and precision of a peak time techno banger, but feels like an ambient tour into Eastern-inflected sound sources that merge into an overall haunting murmur. Coupled with the insistent kick drum it's something of a transcendental piece. Lakker are in an equally captivating mood on the flipside, remixing the original into a slower, more broken stalker bolstered by gaseous bass pulses and deliberately avoiding any heavy drums.

Review: Marking the start of an exciting new collaborative project, Wolf + Lamb proudly share the debut release of The Waves & Us. Formed out of
a creative meeting of minds between Maayan Nidam, Markus Nikolaus and Louis McGuire, theirs is a sound that strengthens the storied
approach of a live band with the experimental thrust of analogue electronics. Pop and rock fundamentals lend an earthly hook to the
tracks, but these are anything but straight-forward songs.
Maayan has already forged a formidable career in electronic music, both under her own name and as part of Mara Trax, scoring releases
on such celebrated labels as Perlon. Markus performs his own solo project Cunt Cunt Chanel, while Louis is part of Ballet School, a band
releasing on noted indie label Bella Union. The whirlwind of creativity that has whipped up around the trio has yielded an album which will
follow this single, made up of one-take recordings that capture the energy and adventure that powers The Waves & Us.
Maayan's electronics provide the atmospheric backdrop to the songs, running modular synthesisers and drum machines through detailed
chains of processing and effects with an emphasis on a warm, charmingly rough finish. Markus' guitar undergoes a similar fuzzy treatment
while his voice calls out introspective, abstract lyrics to set the mind racing. Louis' bass underpins the music with a dubby sensibility,
bringing a necessary balance to the frequency range.
Making the most of their in-the-room recording approach, the singles will feature alternative takes of the songs that will appear on the
album, providing a little insight into the flutters and fluctuations that shape the development of this project. With their eyes fixed on live
performances and an arresting sound already formed, this is a vital time for all three artists and the people that listen to them.

Review: Kansas-based YYU (pronounced "whywhyyou") strikes back after a debut LP which pushed him directly under the limelight back in 2012. His first EP for the ethereal Ramp and indeed, his first EP for any label, is a mesmerising bundle of sound - a sonic patchwork knitted together with the most intricate of aural patterns. YYU has been known to use snippets of field recordings to create his tracks and "Kiss As We Walk" was apparently recorded in a parking lot. Fusing aspects of hip-hop, broken beat and electronica, this guy is the next big thing. "When We're Old" uses similar tactics, this time using a bathroom's natural reverb to coat his sporadic beats and percussion into a total, dream-like twist.

Review: There's not much info on the ground regarding this new Paid Reach label, but the involvement of one Gunnar Wendel will mean there are plenty out there wanting to check it out. First surfacing towards the end of Lowtec's great RA 439 podcast for Resident Advisor last year, Paid Reach is described as a "collaboration" with Wendel's Ominira label and features two tracks "edited and produced" by Wendel. Both "Fair Trade Dark" and "Colddrinksnreverse" exist at the more abstract end of the electronic music scale, with the former little more than playfully toying with a modulated loop. "Colddrinksnreverse" meanwhile is around three minutes of phased and phucked vocal samples. Excellent mixtape material basically.

Review: Started in 2013, Mollusca Vinyl is a Brooklyn based electronic reocrd label specializing in minimal style, analog laden music. Our folks believe in pushing the vinyl medium as art. This set of compositions has been described as Balearic downtempo with pastoral departures. Written while on several beaches, it suggests the definition of lackadaisical make out music, emoting euphoric post pillow talk feelings-of-the-raw through minimalist synth phrasing, ambient texturing and isolated beats. Artwork by Doroniyam at Azuri Cafe. Mastered by Jason at Transition Mastering UK. Printed at Brooklyn Phono.

Review: France's DDD imprint - which is also a gorgeous independent record store, may we add - comes through with another slice of Luc Marianni follies, the French experimental artist from the 80's who has in some way been revived by the persistent folks over at DDD, and for good reason too! Last time it was up to OB Ignitt to remix the Frenchman's work, and the Detroitian produced a veritable gem from something so sparse and airy as Marianni's music. This time, it's Bass Clef who transforms those soundscapes into an all-out frenzy, and what could be the bass producer's nuttiest track yet! A 4/4 beat-frame, grimey percussion slices and a disco background blend so perfectly that we are now more intrigued than ever by both the label's next movements and Bass Clef's own talents. Killer!

Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.

First up, its house oddball Matthew Herbert who's called up for duty and he quickly proceeds to destroy "Proof" and transform it into a stumbling mass of bubbly low-ends, sparse percussion bursts and with Siem's own wailing vocals riding shotgun. On the flipside, we have East India Youth rewiring "See Through" into an eerie techno stepper backed by Siem's voice, except this time the words are processed into waves of atmpherics. Beautiful and deadly.

Review: Knox are Eliza and Nicholas Coolidge, two attractive people that make aptly gorgeous pop-infused techno. Their fifth EP comes on Nicholas Ridha's now enigmatic Boyz Noize Records, an imprint which has shifted the DNA of electro so far that it's become almost a foundation of electronic dance music. "Redline" is a stop-start, techno-laden sketch with Eliza's wailing voice floating over its duration, and while "Well" is sparser and more abstract, the Throwing Snow remix of "Redline" shifts the beats back into place to create one hell of a ne R&B tune!

The result: some of the funkiest, most cosmic, forward-thinking beats you've heard this side of Brainfeeder. Ranging from the Border Community style mournful slo-mo meanders of "Destination Destiny" to the gutter-minded P-funk of "Silver Spine" via the soulful Hudmo-in-a-sewer vibe of "Hardships", this pushes more boundaries than you thought existed. Unique and outstanding in equal measure.

Whether it's the ectoplasmic Kompakt vibes of title track "Flight To Forever", the stuttering rhythms and euphoric synths of "Delta City" or the Fade To Mind grime via Eurosynth of "Please", there's enough here to make One Circle well worth a look for inquisitive electronic minds.

No need to mention, really, but yes, Newman is the dude from Wire - so pay attention. Aside from the fact that all their material as a duo has been nothing short of incredible and visionary over the years, but this latest 10" is fully representative of their best material, and if you're into mesmerising lo-fi electronic music, then look no further and be quick, because these are pretty limited! "Always The Sea" drops us into an ocean of deep, manipulated strings and tones, a channel which develops beautifully into five warm and cinematic soundscapes for the dreamers. Hot. Red hot.

Review: Since 2012, Russia's Udacha label has been providing us with consistently excellent levels of grainy deep house, a particular strand of the genre that easily moulds into something altogether more ethereal and abstract. Newcomer P-SH constructs a beatless sway of placid harmonics on "Wee See The Island", followed by the minimal tribal rattle of percussion called "Mappa Mundi" by Fitz Ellarald. On the flip, "Zsyamono's Odo Message From Flaming Trixx" is hard to describe because of its constantly shifting bundle of sounds and sonics, and "Sumlacre Uno" by Ellarald ties thigns off with a beatless, spaced-out sway powered by a subtle collection of field recordings. Weird and wonderful - TIP!

Review: G-23 makes his debut under the Strange Audio Dreams moniker, coming through on Italy's young Art-Aud label with a sweltering two-tracker backed by two heavy remixes. "Error Design 1" is a break-driven jam that never truly drops into pool of nastiness, leaving you yearning more, while "Error Design 2" strips the beats in favour of glitchy field recordings and percussion-driven drones. Pan's NHK YX Koyxen remixes the former into a wonky bit of brain dynamite, pushing those breaks in and out his melodic waves, Cardopusher makes a deep techno roll out of the same original tune. All in all, a rather essential piece of gear.
