Review: Tim Hecker's music has a way of consistently confounding expectations thanks to his ever shifting nature, and Virgins is no exception. While 2011's Ravedeath 1972 felt weighed down by its sandblasted sound that brought to mind a ravaged landscape, and last year's Instrumental Tourist was filled with subtle Eastern influences, Virgins comes with a sound that feels somehow elegiac; opener "Prism" places cacophonous organs stretched to infinity, while "Radiance" is as close as Hecker will get to the sound of an angelic chorus. Other moments prove more introspective, such as "Live Room Out", and the sullen piano keys of "Black Refraction". It's an album with the same instantly timeless quality of Fennesz's Venice, and comes highly recommended.

Review: For his third full length album, "Leise", Frans de Waard (aka Freiband) recorded his three-years-old daughter Elise (note the anagram in the title) playing the instruments that he had collected for the infamous improv band that he fronts, Kapotte Muziek. Sheets of metal, paper, sticks, plastic and any other junk he could get his hands on were utilized and played with childlike innocence while De Waard quietly recorded every step. In 2003, after he had amassed a wealth of sounds, the transformation of these recordings started as snow fell around his workspace. Beginning from entirely acoustic sources, De Waard began to process and manipulate the sounds using a finely-tuned array of software. Although often the raw sounds of the instruments were lost in a haze of digitalis, the warmth of the original playing shone through, giving "Leise" a dimension that many computer-based releases lack.

Review: It's been five years since the last album from long serving, Los Angeles based electronic experimentalist Eskmo. In the intervening years, he's devoted much time to soundtrack work, and composing music for orchestras. This is reflected in the feel of Sol, an album that fuses field recordings, pulsing electronics, glitchy beats and occasional folksy vocals with the kind of intricate orchestral arrangements that are fast becoming his calling card. Supposedly inspired by the interplay between the earth, the sun and the moon, it's a typically emotive set, with moments of murky darkness rubbing shoulders with heart-aching compositions and grandiose, rush-inducing instrumentals.

Review: Aside from boasting arguably the album title of the year, there's plenty to enjoy on this third full length from Luke Wyatt's popular Torn Hawk project. By and large, there's an enjoyable playfulness throughout, with Wyatt variously turning his hand to glistening, shoegaze-inspired ambience (the shimmering guitars of "She Happens"), jaunty, instrumental kraut-pop ("Return to the Pec Deck"), droning, off-kilter soundtrack chic ("Because of MASK"), bubbling, delay-laden electronica ("Under Wolf Rule") and thrillingly gorgeous, pedal steel-flecked Balearica ("I'm Flexible"). Whisper it quietly, but Let's Cry & Do Pushups At The Same Time is an undeniably fun set. Even his most ardent of fans may not have expected that.

Review: Inga Copeland, of the infamous Hype Williams project alongside Dean Blunt, is back with her Lolina alias courtesy of a sweet self-release album to follow-up on last year's "Relaxin' With Lolina". As you'd expect, Lolina is an album of many shades and guises, with the only stable point being the artist's sporadic vocals riding in and out of the organised sonic noise. Sticking to a resolutely surreal setting, Copeland's lo-fi style is adapted to everything from broken, pseudo bass music - we know, that means pretty much nothing - and that is exactly what this album sounds like, nothing else. In fact, one could say that it acts as the culmination of the last five year's fascination with all things left of field, and it's most definitely worth a listen.

Review: Pinning down Alexis Georgopoulos can be hard. Under his Arp alias, he's previously flitted between odd ambience, vaguely Balearic moods, crusty krautrock, chamber music, chanson and, most notably of all, Arthur Russell-ish experimentalism. This third solo full length for Smalltown Supersound (his last, The Soft Wave, appeared in 2010), touches on all those things and more. The contrast throughout, with wide-eyed ambient cuts sitting next to curious pop moments (see "17th Daydream" and "Gravity (For Charlemagne Palestine)", and torch songs snuggling up to experimental weird-outs ("More (Blues)" and "V2 (Slight Return)"), makes for startling listening. For those in need of a bit more energy, he wisely throws in a slew of fuzzy, Glam-inspired rock moments (of which "Persuasion" is probably the highlight).

Review: On their two previous collaborative albums, F.S Bluum and Nils Frahm delivered carefully considered sets, immaculately pieced together in the studio, that joined the dots between jazz, modern classical, folk and ambient. Here, they explore similar musical pastures, but this time the tracks were wholly improvised using a small array of instruments and effects units (piano, harmonium, guitar and delays, for the most part). While their evocative, soft touch approach remains in tact, there's a rough-round-the-edges feel to proceedings that's hugely enticing. When they really nail it - as on the heart-breaking "Valentine My Funny" and quietly contemplative "Day One Four" - the results are sublime.

Review: Canadian techno adventurer Jean-Patrice Remillard has long been admired for his unusual approach to spaced-out minimalism, where organic sounds and curious samples form the backbone of his glitchy, undulating rhythms. These are much in evidence at Gazing at the Midnight Mist, a live recording of his set at Montreal's answer to Sonar, Mutek. Predictably, there's much to admire, from the music box melodies and sparse African drums of "Intro", and the dubwise, psychedelic techno pulse of "Mystic Days", to the intoxicating density and shuffling rhythms of "Connected to What Could Be Multi-Dimension", and dreamy, intergalactic feel of "Passing Out To Others".

Review: Arguably better known these as distorted eletronica and industrial techno wrong 'un Low Jack, Philippe Hallais is undoubtedly one of electronic music's most singular talents. Further proof of his forthright approach is provided by An American Hero, which marks his first album free of the Low Jack alias. It's a typically experimental in tone, with the producer's usual metallic sounds, mind-altering distortion and analogue fuzz all in evidence, alongside pulse-like rhythms and clear club-wise movements. For example, tracks such as "Everything (Good)" and "Angela (Square)" burst out of the speakers with a mind-bending vortex of sounds that pull you into a subtle groove. Compared to most left field or ambient albums out there, Hallais has made sure to keep you locked and excited for the whole damn thing.

Review: Postal Service member Jimmy Tamborello has always had a knack for manipulating sound. Sometimes, this has meant subverting accepted genres - lo-fi rock, for example, or IDM. At others, his approach is much more melodious, mixing skewed sounds and popping electronic rhythms with elements of pop. Human Voice, his first album in two years, continues in the latter vein. By and large, it's a thoroughly positive affair, with cheery electronic melodies and cut-up, pitched down vocal samples riding cheeky rhythms and slack-tuned drums. As a result, Human Voice is hard to pin down, being neither straight up ambient or IDM. Regardless, it's a wonderfully evocative and entertaining set.

Review: You couldn't accuse The Assembled Minds' Matt Saunders - arguably best known as one half of 4AD outfit Magnetophone - of lacking a clear vision. With sophomore solo set Creaking Haze & Other Rave Ghosts, he claims to have created "techno-Morris-horror", via an aural "investigation into how a '70s British horror movie would sound, if a strange kind of proto-rave dance music had been at the director's disposal". In essence, this manifests itself in piano laden ambient tracks to tease and titillate zombie maypole dancers, discordant dancefloor slow jams peppered with creepy ice cream van chimes, and occasional blasts of loved-up, misty-eyed nostalgia.

Review: Given his productivity, it's rather a surprise to find that Alan Abrahams is Portable's first album for five years. Coming out on German behemoth !K7, the collection sees the affable South African exploring the potential of woozy, off-kilter electronic soul. Shot through with his usual blissful, synthesized beauty, atmospheric pads and yearning melodies, the set's 11 tracks veer from skittish, deep broken techno "More Than", and string-laden simplicity (the intensely beautiful "As For Me"), to tear-jerking ambience ("The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Drinker"), deep, malcnholic Afro-house ("Seraphin"), and Osunlade style, organic explorations (the wonderful "This Frozen Lake").

Review: It's always been hard to pin down the work of Shit & Shine, an ever-changing collective of drummers, guitarists, electronics wizards and experimentalists gathered around industrial maverick Craig Clouse. Their self-proclaimed "post everything" sound changes with each successive release. Here, Clouse and company doff a cap to krautrock, drone, lo-fi rock, metal and industrial on a set that veers between spaced-out, hypnotic post-rock excellence, angry, riff-laden soundscapes and pleasingly-spaced out epics. There's something decidedly psychedelic about Clouse's approach, even if the resultant music is remarkably down to earth, and some will hear the out-of-this-world swing of freestyle jazz amongst the rumbling bass and mentalist keys on "Writing Poetry On Your Forehead With The Tip of A Hunting Knife".

Review: Former Kitty-Yo man Raz Ohara - AKA Danish singer/songwriter Patrick Rasmussen - has been very quite of late. He seemed to all but disappear from view following the release of sophomore album The Last Legend in 2001, something that still seems inexplicable given the quality of his unusual blends of leftfield electronica, sparse synth-pop and soft focus blue-eyed soul. Moksha, his first album in 13 years, finds him in fine form, offering up more druggy, woozy, near Balearic blends of wide-eyed electronics, shuffling rhythms, dubby ambience, folksy whimsy and his own impassioned vocals. It's an unusual but attractive sound, sitting somewhere between Balaearica, folktronica and abstract electronica.
