Virage (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IIB 043. Rel: 16 Nov 15

  2. Virage (Ruf Dug extension) (8:46)
  3. Guam (3:44)
  4. Guam (Deep 88 remix) (6:15)
Review: IIB next release comes from French duo Baptiste & Pierre. 2 tracks of warm tropical goodness. Virage is a deep mellow afro tinged tropical workout. Muted guitar hook and nature sounds conjuring up far flung deserted beaches. Ruf dug beefs it up a touch and moves it indoors giving it a more afterhours feel. The second track has the same evocative feel as Virage with added atmospheric pads and a bouncy melody. Like a closing track on an 80's road movie. Full of emotion. Italian maestro Deep 88 creates a truly authentic slice of early ninetoes deep dreamy house. Perfectly wrapping the original in warm analogue drums. Another quality release from IIB.

  3. Kick & Flutter (Soft Rocks Naked remix)
Review: Kinfolk head to Philly for Kinfolk004, welcoming committed vinyl rummager and top notch DJ Billy Werner into the fold. This two track 12" is the apparent end product of that rare occurrence where budding producer sends label unsigned tracks that are actually decent. "Kick & Flutter" is a blinky blue sunrise of a tune, innocent, euphoric and, dare we say, totally Balearic... not retro but timeless. "Where the sea meets the Stones" treads a similar line but with a more incessant acidic undertone. Both perfect for chasing sunrises and sunsets... As is traditional you get a Soft Rocks remix to boot... murmured voices, gentle pulses and psychedelic repetition. Did any of the original make it in there? Just relax and enjoy it...

Review: Is It Balearic releases a debut EP from Clandestino's Joe Morris. 4 tracks of lush electronic grooves. The title track Golden Tides is a mid tempo houser with beautiful pads and soft arpeggios. Late afternoon sundowner vibrations. The second track Bayou has touches of Sueno Latino about it., an afterdark evocative tropical house trip. On the flip the first track Light Of The Moon is a more reflective slo mo affair. Warm pads and 808 sounds melting into cicadas. Finally we come to Mpondo Theme. Sounds of nature , Kalimba and loose percussion all sit together and watch the sun dip over the savannah horizon. A proper EP this covering all shades.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: Uber's latest offering is a sublime 5 track ep from French producer Shelter. Sailing On A Black sea is a drifting piece of ambient electronica. Late night stargazing on the deck with the waves gently lapping on the shore. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Seaport theme continues the coastal vibrations but with a touch of bounce and uplifting choral vocal stabs and louche pads. Finally Water Plain closes the journey with kalimbas and xylophonic melodies and the contining theme of phosphoescent seas and soothing synth sounds. A very accopmlished slice of beach bar balearica destined for sunsets around the med for years to come.

Review: Uber picked up this beautiful mellowed out pop song by Shining Bird for a vinyl release after becoming totally captivated by its warm laid back Balearic feel. Shining Bird hail from Austinmer a coastal town just south of Sydney, Australia. They are a collective of friends who got together over their love of the sea, Australian cinema, Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" Lp and the great Australian poet Henry Lawson. The second track Stitzing/Wipeout is another great alternative pop song in the same vein as Destroyer with the song blending into a 5 min piece of psyched out ambient. On the flip side Coyote remix Distant Dreaming into a horizontal percussion led dubby contemplative trip with pitched down vocals and a throbbing bassline. Uber continuing its crusade of finding and releasing music that captures their Balearic ethos.

Review: New artist Daniel Wainwright brings his psychedelic vibrations to Is It Balearic ...? Doing It is a slow motion sleazy trip into the acid house. Swirling vocals and psyched out guitars melt into chuggy acid beats and effects. Coyote up the tempo a touch and strip back the whole track on their remix. Dubby vocal samples and muted guitar groove along to an acidic finale. The second remix is a real thing of beauty from Mushrooms Project. Keeping the same slow tempo and adding space and texture with mellow guitars and extra sitar. A subtlely developing tribal workout. Groovy man.

Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.

Review: The Is It Balearic? train just keeps on rolling as Coyote proffers up even more refined grooves from the heart of the dreamy island dance. "Deep Italian" channels the spirits of classic sensual deep house that clearly nods to the likes of Vibraphone Records for inspiration, while "Fresh Hope" creates a more bewildering experience with interloping melodies and a more insistent beat underneath. "Take Me Back" uses plucked string motifs to weave its own enchanting message, while "Long Board" gets a more plush line in synths to work to round the EP out.

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has form when it comes to putting together must-have vinyl box sets. A few years back, he brought the Originals series of Balearic compilations to a close with a fine box set. Now, to celebrate the 10th birthday of his Claremont 56 label, he's put together another lavishly produced, five-vinyl set, this time made up of brand new or previously unheard material. As you'd expect, highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out quirkiness of Holgar Czukay's "Music To Be Murdered By" and the rubbery electrofunk of Phil Mison's remix of FreshRo's "Pacific State", to the samba-boogie of Jex Opolis's remix of Paraiso, and deep space Balearic bliss of Leo Cecranti's "Andromeda Bound". Throw in killer reworks from Lexx, Bjorn Torske, Ron Trent, Larry Heard, Emperor Machine, and Murphy himself, and you have an essential collection.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

Layer upon layer of emotive synths and a pulsing arp help you drift towards a beautiful climax. Coyote slow the pace a little keeping the hypnotic pulsing arpeggio and add some lazy beachside drums, percussion, a few pianos and Kalimbas creating a beautiful beach bar shuffler..Brooklyn's finest Zoovox create a subtle analogue rework staying close to original but adding their own delicate vibrations. 'Thirteenth Roll in A Bakers Dozen' takes a slower spaced out route. This set of compositions has been described as Balearic downtempo with pastoral departures. Written while on several beaches, it suggests the definition of lackadaisical make out music, emoting euphoric post pillow talk feelings-of-the-raw through minimalist synth phrasing, ambient texturing and isolated beats. Review: After taking us on a drug chug at the start of the year DJ Rocca serves up 2 tracks for the next EDSC Release.

Lets Go Party kicks things off.... stabby chords, Roland percussion, catchy vocal shots, bass-line and massive E'd up breakdowns make this a must have slate for your box.

Th remix comes in the form of an Italo banger from a fave of the El Diablo's cartel - Brioski who goes straight for the heart of the dance floor and rips it right out.

Slumber slows the pace down a bit sounding like something from a late 70's Italian horror movie...pulsating chords & echoey piano reminiscent of Claudio Simonetti & John Carpenter.

El Diablo's Social Club remix stays in the same vein making making sparse use of the eerie piano whilst adding a chuggy bassline, heavy arps and some extra guitars courtesy of Crazy P's Tim Davies.

"Synthetic" is anything but, riding on a bed of hand-played percussion and capturing an innate warmth in its melodic content that feels utterly natural, even if it has been played on synthesisers. Ilija Rudman steps up with a fat old bassline and some eerie strings and chimes that make his remix a thoroughly worthwhile one, and then Robot 84 makes a more drastic turn towards peppy deep house for an audacious revision that frames the original in a whole new light.

Review: "How To Be" EP is brought by Izhevsk based band, Cetranger. The band's name is a combination of french «c'etrange» and english «stranger». Two deep and emotional songs accompanied by two great remixes. Perfect for understanding yourself and strangers around better, or just some good night drive. The band members themselves call this music "a cinematic electronics", a motion picture about people and their feelings told in sounds.
The opening track sets the scene. Cetranger sound is freezed in the air somewhere over the North Sea, between Britain and Nordic Countries. The unique vocal is travelling by these foggy landscapes build up of the piano harmonies.
The remix by D-pulse turns original version into a laid-back dub version with a bit of a psychedelia, where electrified kraut-rock drumline is mingled with mellow funk elements.
The second track by Cetranger, "Spear-words", shows the true with Cetranger's style and some undeniable potential in slowed-down rhythms. "Spear-words" makes your subwoofer sing along with the track's hypnotic gritty low-end bass sequence.
Alex Neivel's remix gives a track some classy well treated deep house spin. Perfect building block for a late-night set.

Review: Here's a question for you: What happens when you take a track by a British power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre Balearica to remix it? You get the latest 12" missive from Claremont 56, which sees Bella Figura's "Better Man" reworked twice in impressive fashion by Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley. If you are familiar with Bratley's output for s It Balearic, Bird Scarer and Tsuba, you know the man breathes cosmic goodness and his work on Bella Figura's track offers a subtle new version that loses none of Justin Gartry's bluesy poignancy whilst adding a sparsely treated beat and plenty of low lying studio trickery.

Review: Theo Conrad (better known for his work under the Paxton Fettel alias) has long been one of Greta Cottage Workshop's most intriguing artists. His first full-length for the Devon imprint, Everything Stays The Same, inhibited similar territory to the classic deep house/downtempo/soul/jazz fusion of fellow West Country dwellers The Rurals. This follow-up is, if anything, even better. Described by the label as "instrumental contemporary jazz-funk", the album sees Conrad combining loose jazz breaks and jazzy synths with the kind of rich grooves, fireside textures and dreamy electronics more often found in vintage deep house productions. It's a formula that results in a string of brilliant tracks.

Review: Polish studio boffin Naphta seems to be a producer on the rise. His most recent EP, Solar Empire, created memorable deep house tracks out of humid instrumentation, loose percussion and curious South American influences. Here he's at it again, offering exotic, sun-ripened grooves for Axel Boman and company's Studio Barnhus imprint. "Palm Trees Love" has a little more lazy disco flavour, with glistening guitars, snappy handclaps and a warm, dub-influenced bassline helping to create a particularly Balearic mood. There's an even more humid, South American feel to the choppy "Spring Ball", which is also turned into an hypnotic chunk of heads-down tech-house - complete with Batucada drums and intoxicating electronic noises - by remixer Simon Haydo.

Review: Mr Yo So hails from Poland and makes his way to Father & Son Records & Tapes for a solo EP having previously appeared on Maciek Sienkiewicz's label as part of a compilation two years ago. Mr Yo So's sound is a wide-ranging technicolour wonderland laden with expressive synths and ever-evolving compositional heft that draws on a wide range of influences to make a very distinctive end result. "Freetual" works around digi-dub motifs and warm lead lines, while "The Road To The Forest" comes on like a neo-classical composition. "Delicious" has a noirish 70s funk tone at its core, and "Louis I Know (Part II)" takes a slow and smooth approach. There's never a dull moment on Delicious, that's for certain.

Review: * RSD edtiion on Pink Vinyl + 7"* Jon Tye and Pete Fowler's work together under the Seahawks banner is characterised by a few key elements; firstly they've been hugely prolific since first collaborating as Seahawks with no less than eight previous albums to their name. In addition, there's always a richness in texture and attention to detail which is unsurprising given Tye's work at the head of Lo Recordings and Fowler's respected career as an illustrator. With their cosmic brand of space rock and Balearica now down to a fine art, the latest Seahawks long player Paradise Freaks sees Tye and Fowler at their most ambitious with a high profile cast of supporting musicians that includes Maria Minerva, Tim Burgess, Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights and Hot Chip's Al Doyle and Grovesnor crooner Rob Smoughton. The resultant eight track set is as dreamy as you can hope for from the good ship Seahawks.

Review: Jose's tones have been charmed by remixes in the past; notably by Jori Hulkkonen on "Crosses" and Todd Terje on "Killing For Love". Almost 10 years later and Holy Ghost! and Dino Soccio remind us how it's done on "Let It Carry You" from Jose's 2014 album Vestiges & Claws. Holy Ghost! gives Gonzales such a sparkling polish and spaces out his lyrics he sounds like Hot Chip while Dino adds a more cosmic, chuggy dubby Norwegian sound. Like previous twists on Jose, both are sublime.

Review: A decade-long lunch is quite the time out! After lying dormant for some ten years, Out To Lunch returns with a new record from mystery production unit The Hangout Project. Overseen by Jens Kuhn, aka Lowtec, Out To Lunch was active between 1996 and 2005 and was seemingly put to bed soon after the Workshop label took flight. Kuhn's elected to relaunch Out To Lunch with the minimum of fuss and Sword Of Light is a worthy way to reintroduce the label indeed. Who The Hangout Project are hasn't been made clear but they have a clear and accomplished mastery of production, with the three tracks veering from luxuriant footwork on the title track to more low slung beatdown exercises on the flip. "Transfer" is quite lovely.

Review: Given that Balearic Gabba Sound System are big fans of Walter Del Vecchio's work under the Quiroga alias, it's little surprise to find him popping up on the Hell Yeah label they call home. Like many Napoli-based producers, Del Verchio is a master at joining the dots between languid, synth-heavy Balearica, pitched-down deep house, and the kind of kaleidoscopic electronics that were once the backbone of Italy's dream house movement. All of these elements can be found on superb A-side "Viaggio A Tulum", alongside some blissfully brilliant electric piano flourishes. On the flip, he slows things down to a mind-altering pace on the dubbed-out acid trip-hop of "Non Dire Notte" and presses the button marked "drowsy ambient" on "Prati Bagnati" and closer "Bava".

Review: "Midnight Features" is a new series of "fantasy records" imagined by Lilacs & Champagne's Emil Amos and Alex Hall. Inspired by the classic Marvel comic series "What If?", the duo seek to place themselves into various musical eras, expanding and perverting each new stylistic context they land in. This first volume, "Shower Scene", was inspired by the background music from 1970s TV shows - the frenetic solos, sleazy funk lines and jazz-influenced sounds that subtly lurk behind the tales of crime, drama and passion. The band scratch beneath the soft-focus surface of this era, discovering a darker, more realized territory. "Shower Scene" is also the first release to feature Lilacs & Champagne playing as a live band. The expanded line-up (Zac Reno bass & sampler, Ash Black Bufflo keys & piano) blends live instrumentation with sample-based songs, breathing a fresh new sensibility into their sound. However the clever stylistic hybridity that marked their earlier releases remains intact, with new sonic palettes explored and experimented with on every track. On "Sensations" the band sound like a blazing, psych-jazz imagination of The Soft Machine, whereas "Maple Street" approximates the avant-jazz Moondog might have made if he'd lived into the era of sampling. Limited numbered edition of 1,000. Includes download code.

Review: House Music With Love turn once again to Swedish duo Swim for a record soaked in a particularly soothing bath of Balearic goodness. Original track "Be There" is certainly laced with an air of Scandinavian cool, not least thanks to Erika Rosen's dreamy vocals, but there's a solid boogie undercarriage carrying the music along. Halllo Halo step up with a remix that makes a playful, intricate broken beat refrain out of the backing track while maintaining the vocals. Ghost Immanuel meanwhile whips up a spacious dub that stays close to the original, albeit in instrumental form.

Review: 1980's post-punk outfit 23 Skidoo release their first new material in fifteen years! These guys have been right up there with the likes of Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle in the past, always evolving and developing their sound while retaining a distinctive industrial edge. Beyond Time is inspired by a 2011 documentary of the same name - the DVD of the documentary is slotted inside this packaging - and it's probably the most 'relaxed' work we've heard from the group before. There's plenty of ambience and slow-paced beats, dense landscapes of sound and even flurries of jazz. Fantastic from beginning to end, this comes hotly recommended for all the B-side junkies.
