  1. Work (featuring Brassica)
  2. Barbarism (featurning Red Axes)
  3. Der (featuring The Emperor Machine)
  4. Sleep Red! (featuring Sam from Gramme - dub)
Review: As Headman gears up to release his sixth album it appears he's having something of an identity crisis... Is he Headman? Or is he, as his mother named him, Robi Insinna? Either way, he's one of disco's most daring of producers and, monikers aside, anything he releases is well worth your attention. Especially this first sampler from the album 6. A collaborative affair, each track sees him teaming up with kindred spirits and friends to forge new groove paths and re-position old references. "Work" takes a Kraftwerkian recipe and stretches it like a well made pizza dough, "Barbarism" dusts off the cosmic guitars for an enlightened star-gazing session, "Der" sits happily between Black Strobe and Jeff Wayne while "Sleep Red" cruises towards DFA City Limits in a cowbell Escalade. Each one of them will have you hankering for the album. Guaranteed.

  4. Guam (Deep 88 remix) (6:15)
Review: IIB next release comes from French duo Baptiste & Pierre. 2 tracks of warm tropical goodness. Virage is a deep mellow afro tinged tropical workout. Muted guitar hook and nature sounds conjuring up far flung deserted beaches. Ruf dug beefs it up a touch and moves it indoors giving it a more afterhours feel. The second track has the same evocative feel as Virage with added atmospheric pads and a bouncy melody. Like a closing track on an 80's road movie. Full of emotion. Italian maestro Deep 88 creates a truly authentic slice of early ninetoes deep dreamy house. Perfectly wrapping the original in warm analogue drums. Another quality release from IIB.

Review: Kinfolk head to Philly for Kinfolk004, welcoming committed vinyl rummager and top notch DJ Billy Werner into the fold. This two track 12" is the apparent end product of that rare occurrence where budding producer sends label unsigned tracks that are actually decent. "Kick & Flutter" is a blinky blue sunrise of a tune, innocent, euphoric and, dare we say, totally Balearic... not retro but timeless. "Where the sea meets the Stones" treads a similar line but with a more incessant acidic undertone. Both perfect for chasing sunrises and sunsets... As is traditional you get a Soft Rocks remix to boot... murmured voices, gentle pulses and psychedelic repetition. Did any of the original make it in there? Just relax and enjoy it...

Review: "Lizards are Lee Forster (1/3 Last Waltz) and James Hadfield (the mainstay of the Elizabeth Collective). Taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, Anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. It's one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable. International Track lives up to it's name, seeing the North Eastern English producers channel the Japanese take on the Balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as CosMes. Ironically, with his remix, Japanese based Max Essa lends a Euro Pop lilt to the track, softening the beats and adding delicate 80s digital melodies."

Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist C Scott. "Climb On" is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while "Hands Free" provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. Disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. "Stuttering" demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning FX still capturing that classic good-time mood, while "At Ease" finishes on a life-affirming canter of Rhodes led celebration.

Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

While the band may have had most of their time in the spotlight in the late 70s, they bowed out with a veritable bomb in the shape of Tittle Tattle, a tightly-wound, punchy slice of uptempo 80s boogie like they just can't make any more. Feel the reverb on the handclaps, the slick guitar chops and Moog-tastic bassline and just try not getting down. This plush reissue comes packed with the radio edit, the full length version, the instrumental and everyone's favourite slice of 80s B side action, the dub mix.

Review: Helmed by Asaf Samuel and Katzele, Malka Tuti transmits cosmic boogie sounds from Tel Aviv that come from lesser-known sources. On their fifth release they turn to The Kloom, a loose-fit operation of unknowns making a debut appearance with the powerful strut of "40 Gram Beton". Mixing slow disco grooves with ranging synths and warm piano notes, it's an infectious track that provides a prime jump-off point for the cast of remixers that round out the release. Die Wilde Jagd adds a more mechanical coldwave pulse to the track while Khidja gets lost in a swirling trip of a version, with the label throwing in a radio edit as a bonus on the B2.

The 1982 bombshell, originally out on Discomagic Records, goes by the name of "The Man From Colours", and it is a special track indeed, one that's full of romantic charm, mystery and plenty of proto-house vibes. Its vocals will be embedded in your mind forever upon first listen, and you get an instrumental cut on the flip, too. Highly recommended - DO NOT SLEEP.

  4. No End (Vezurro remix)
Review: From the Leath-meister: The limited Especial Specials continues with 4 remixes of Jaakko Eino Kalevi's Dreamzone EP. Featuring a heavy weight line up of Tom Noble, Heatsick, Peaking Lights and Vezurro, this is an all-bases-covered masterclass is taking Jaakko's pop leanings and giving them some boogie, dub and Italo sparkle. Hot on the heels of the Steaua de Mare Remixes comes 4 retakes of Jaakko Eino Kalevi's idiosyncratic pop stylings. Licensed from Weird World Records, this sees the multi-instrumentalist's original Dreamzone EP handed over for readjustment. The up, up boogie vibes of Tom Noble's calling card create his best remix to take. No Fun maybe Jaakko's 'ladies' love hymn, but with Tom's distinctive "never ending" bass and hats loops moving hips, a keys solo and vocal interplay ensure sublime perfection. Next Steven Warwick's superb Heatsick project implants his twisted casio-rawness in to Jaakko's world, marrying Memories ghostly vocals into a mix of afro-clipped beats and lo-fi melody that just fits. So happy to finally welcome in friends, family and inspiration, Peaking Lights in to the family. Aaron and Indra's uplifting dub love comes alive in this remix, with live bass grooves, vibing keys and Jaakko's unique vocal riding-a-riddim' all night long. To close up and coming Vezurro return to No Fun, providing an Italo love ode that can only move hearts into a true Rimini '84 summer affair. "Can't you see that I'm dancing?"

Review: After a three-year absence, former Redux and Cynic duo Machete Savane (AKA Saul Richards and Andy Bainbridge of Bad Passion Project) return to action. Fittingly, it comes on Bad Passion Project's Not An Animal Records. "Manticore" is something of a treat for those who like their disco electronic, atmospheric and doused in perm-sporting rock and '80s AOR influences (think winding guitar solos, Italo-disco arpeggio lines, punk-funk bass, and spacey electronics). It comes backed with two contrasting remixes: a throbbing, disco-tech revision from ESP Institute regular, and an ambient re-invention from Jonny Nash. The latter's alternately glistening and dreamy version is as sublime as you'd expect.

"Kendo Rocks" pays homage to UK wrestling OG Kendo Nagasaki with feint Oriental motifs over a steady chugging, dubby groove while "Bernie's Boogie" takes us on a hazy, balmy Gainsbourg style trip. Finally we hit "Getting Spacey Again" with a juicy synth-laced, slap-bassed disco groove looped up with raw majesty. Get mashed.

  2. Bruce Ivery - "LULU"
Review: KHANDoit's hypnotic 100 BPM stomp does not adhere to genre or fickle trends, it simply bangs. The track begins with a sturdy kick and piano glissandos which recall Alice Coltrane's most transportative work. As the beat picks up, a creeping, filtered arpeggio enters its journey between rhythmic and downright nasty serving as the track's primary drama. Its a stunning intro to the new label GRIMY TRAX, a musical chameleon that can be dropped at the beginning, middle or end of the night. To complement the epic A-side, Grimy returns to the endlessly talented midwest and emerges with LULU, an original track by deejay/edit ace Bruce Ivery. The track seamlessly combines the Chicago acid sound with the clever vocal sampling of early 90s NYC house. The result is pure peak-time heat. Towards the end of the track, Ivery arranges brief melodic elements into a propulsive disco facsimile. This unexpected turn summarizes the philosophy of the new label and the way this small group of artists selects and makes records. It doesn't matter if it's house, disco, or techno, just make it GRIMY!

Review: The inherent romanticism of Italo Disco has always lent the genre a more esoteric edge, and with this Cyber Dance release, Antoni Maiovvi seems intent on creating a narrative that cannot be contained by a simple dance track. This is not to say that both "Impulse" and "Requiem for Clarence Boddiker" are not suited to club play. They both pound down with that staccato urgency, and equally rise and fall through moments of intensity and serenity. It's just that, at 12 and 11 minutes respectively, both sides of this record have ample room in which to tell a more involved story.

Shining Bird hail from Austinmer a coastal town just south of Sydney, Australia. They are a collective of friends who got together over their love of the sea, Australian cinema, Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" Lp and the great Australian poet Henry Lawson. The second track Stitzing/Wipeout is another great alternative pop song in the same vein as Destroyer with the song blending into a 5 min piece of psyched out ambient. On the flip side Coyote remix Distant Dreaming into a horizontal percussion led dubby contemplative trip with pitched down vocals and a throbbing bassline. Uber continuing its crusade of finding and releasing music that captures their Balearic ethos.

As is customary on the label, the mood takes on a laid back approach to four to the floor grooves, with "Coloured Pens" kicking off proceedings on a soaring bed of psyched-out house optimism. While "The Italian" may be moodier in its demeanour, it's still just as mellow in its delivery, capitalising on alluring wave synths and reverb swells to great effect. "Plain Of Jars" takes a trippier direction with its bubbling FX and bongo-powered beatdown, and then "Lavender" switches things up with a rolling breakbeat undercarriage and plush lead lines on top.

Review: FINA Records presents 'Tyranny of Fun', the debut EP from Slow Learner. The coining of the new alias 'Slow Learner', marks a new chapter and musical direction for an already established artist who is by no means new to the game. Preferring to start afresh and steer clear from associations, the somewhat reclusive figure from the South Coast is now focused instead on allowing his new output to speak solely for itself. And his debut release under his new pseudonym achieves just that. 'Tyranny of Fun' is an accomplished sonic offering that reveals a versatile sound characterized by original combinations of samples, depth and range. The EPs opener, 'The Skin Horse' is surely one for the after afters - a dark and off kilter growler of a track whose prevailing bassline and waltz time beat provide a brooding backdrop and relentless rolling nod to its intricate fusion of dissident chords, dusty synths and jazz stabs. On the flip side, an unpredictable 'Cupboard Love' starts muted and deep but soon surprises, opening out into a warm and progressive feel-good groove. Mixing things up again, Slow Learner impulsively cuts up the flow 4 minutes in with a funk-filled refrain, leaving the track dancing in and around dirtier disco territories. Last up, a made for vinyl 'Honey' goes deeper still; a delectably crafted down tempo offering whose syrupy vocals stir and evocative cross-rhythm synths, coupled with the vintage analogue percussion, ooze an unmistakable old 90's deep house sound.

Review: Best Records' own luminary Claudio Casalini was at the helm for this one-shot studio project that captures Italo disco at its most exuberant and organic. Originally released in 1984, the bassline on "Stop Your Lies" is a quintessential slice of synthetic throb from a golden era, but the electronic elements are wonderfully offset by rich instrumentation and a brilliantly camp vocal performance from the unnamed boy-girl combo. The vocal mix on the A side is strong enough for a single-sided cut, but the instrumental on the flip widens out the reach of the record and really lets Casalini's superb production shine through.

This single-sided jam serves to raise the intrigue around the project further still with its dense, organically enhanced production and dreamy atmosphere, keeping the tempo slow and simmering for the early part of the party.

  3. Island Of Love (Obergman remix) (5:25)
Review: Having originally surfaced on Creme Organization back in 2002, Luke Eargoggle and Ronnie Johansson's Monkeyshop project is an intermittent treat that offers the best of warm synth-led electronic disco. On their second outing for Ali Renault's Vivod label (after the excellent Escape From The Mental Zoo EP in 2014) the pair bring yet more of that addictive, utopian dance magic on this new record. "Island Of Love" is indeed a romantic club burner with smatterings of vintage synth pop in its bones, while "Heartbreak" takes a more overtly Italo direction and sounds just as strong with it. Obergman then takes "Island Of Love" to task with a respectful remix that shines a few different synth lines and beat patterns through the same fuzzy prism.

Review: The Iceland-born, Norway-based producer, B. G. Baarregaard, channels the great tradition of Scandinavian electronic disco on this delectable four-tracker, maintaining a crisp and funky edge to his productions while making sure every inch of the wax is dripping with old-skool warmth. "Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Review: London-based producer Keyboard Masher has been flying out a no-nonsense brand of disco-infected grooves since 2010 on their own KM Editions label. Devoid of hype and placing the emphasis on the music, the eighth installment in this crucial series of seductive late night jams packs in more boogie than you can shake a particularly funky stick at. "Ferry Home" strikes an irresistible 80s note with its live band undercurrent, while "I'm Still Qualified" slinks down into a more sultry mood before "Twin Magjik" heads skywards on a bed of twinkling synth tones. Sweet disco tones don't come fresher than this.

Review: New artist Daniel Wainwright brings his psychedelic vibrations to Is It Balearic ...? Doing It is a slow motion sleazy trip into the acid house. Swirling vocals and psyched out guitars melt into chuggy acid beats and effects. Coyote up the tempo a touch and strip back the whole track on their remix. Dubby vocal samples and muted guitar groove along to an acidic finale. The second remix is a real thing of beauty from Mushrooms Project. Keeping the same slow tempo and adding space and texture with mellow guitars and extra sitar. A subtlely developing tribal workout. Groovy man.

Review: The Chordz EP brings it with 3 hot new modern Boogie tracks.

Label Hero Newman opens the release with the title track 'Chordz' - a synth-fuelled dancefloor banger, reminiscent of Harvey Sutherland's recent work. Flip it over and Ourra (aka Simon Tappenden aka 'Pop Out N Play') brings us a truly Tropical treat reminiscent of Palm Trees, Pina Coladas and 80's Miami sunsets. Last but not least, Keyboardist for Brian Ellis, Adam Chini plays 'Horizons of Funk'... a lush down tempo synth funk number bringing the EP to the perfect close.

Review: Katastrofa EP is an Ex-Yu Edits release which transforms forgotten gems from the former Yugoslavia. Russian Valique and Serbian veteran selector Funky Junkie are behind this project. Opener "Katastrofa" offers a delicious blend of heavy, synth-laden '80s boogie, punchy afrobeat horns and bold, chant-a-long vocals, while the slower, more chugging "Frka" is an Adriatic delight - all lazy, sun-kissed synths, sugary-sweet vocals and sloppy kisses. As for closer "Yugoslavia" , it sounds like a disco-house anthem in waiting, as the duo adds bumpin' beats to a rising, horn-heavy chunk of starlight disco.

Review: Billing themselves as "a crew of beat junkies raised in the legendary "Sugar Shack" studio," Difusion make their first appearance on their own label in style with some righteous edits that make some decisive cuts where it counts for pure dancefloor dynamite. "Losing Me" is more of a rolling breakbeat-inflected house workout with a deadly delay treatment on the vocals that drops in at just the right time to surely set a club off at any hour. "Get Up" is a more sultry cut but it still hits heavy, and "Be Truthful" and "Change It" both offer up differing soulful angles to make this a highly versatile record for all kinds of situations.

Review: The Is It Balearic? train just keeps on rolling as Coyote proffers up even more refined grooves from the heart of the dreamy island dance. "Deep Italian" channels the spirits of classic sensual deep house that clearly nods to the likes of Vibraphone Records for inspiration, while "Fresh Hope" creates a more bewildering experience with interloping melodies and a more insistent beat underneath. "Take Me Back" uses plucked string motifs to weave its own enchanting message, while "Long Board" gets a more plush line in synths to work to round the EP out.

Review: The fledgling Cocktail D'Amoure imprint maintains their status quo in our affections with its second release which sees Heatsick at the helm. Whilst this is the debut twelve inch from the East Anglian recently transposed to Berlin, he has plenty of DIY form having released some under the shade CDrs for that most esteemed of imprints Not Not Fun, amongst others. His is a talent worth paying attention to, as the classiness of "Dream Tennis" will inform your senses. Central to the track is a kaleidoscopic treatment of a vintage Casiotone keyboard, its rusted rhythms oscillating outwards with true intent over equally strained Chicago house drum patterns. Seemingly endless in its progression, "Dream Tennis" is a track worthy of NNF offshoot 100 Silk and a magnificent coup by Cocktail d'Amour overseers Discodromo and DJ Boris. Equally fine is their choice of remixers with the hallowed phrase Prins Thomas Diskomiks adorned across the B Side reason enough for inquisitive minds to seek out - however it's the remix from Comeme's Diegors that almost matches the delight of the original, bringing to the fore a hitherto undisclosed sonic restraint that embellishes proceedings with an otherworldly, Mr Fingers vibe.

Review: La Dame Noir is one of Marseille's most reliable outposts for serious disco-flavoured grooves both in the club and as a label, and now they make the leap to vinyl with a crucial collection of remixes from serious heads. Pete Herbert steps up first to rework M.U.S.I.Q.U.E's "Over To You", turning the original into a simmering, noirish burner with speak and spell vox in the foreground. Meanwhile Herbert's take on Nouveau Rom's "Timide Comme Un Ange" is a looped-up dream of a groove that positively takes off when the peak section kicks in. DJ Steef then echoes the remix choices on the B-side, subtly edging the Nouveau Rom track into an even airier version before creating an emotional twist on "Over To You".

Review: To accompany their re-release of East Wall's superb 1991 debut album, Silence, Dark Entries has decided to put out the Italian band's forgotten debut release, 1985 single "Eye of Glass". Tending towards the darker end of the Italo-disco spectrum, but blessed with typically cheery synthesizer melodies and skewed female vocals, it's a record that seems far more inspired by the earlier British new wave synth-pop movement than pleasing the clubs of Rome or Rimini. The vocal version is accompanied by a subtly different instrumental, which includes waves of warm synths and offers more prominence to the band's bubbly electronics, throbbing arpeggio bassline, and delay-laden drum machine hits.

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has form when it comes to putting together must-have vinyl box sets. A few years back, he brought the Originals series of Balearic compilations to a close with a fine box set. Now, to celebrate the 10th birthday of his Claremont 56 label, he's put together another lavishly produced, five-vinyl set, this time made up of brand new or previously unheard material. As you'd expect, highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out quirkiness of Holgar Czukay's "Music To Be Murdered By" and the rubbery electrofunk of Phil Mison's remix of FreshRo's "Pacific State", to the samba-boogie of Jex Opolis's remix of Paraiso, and deep space Balearic bliss of Leo Cecranti's "Andromeda Bound". Throw in killer reworks from Lexx, Bjorn Torske, Ron Trent, Larry Heard, Emperor Machine, and Murphy himself, and you have an essential collection.

Review: It's been a long time coming, the debut Slow Hands EP Everything (We Are) on Wolf + Lamb Records. Yes, you read that right, this is the first EP to be released by the long time W+L artist, Slow Hands.

Known to his friends & family as Ryan Cavanagh, the native Vermonter has maintained a career as both a live musician, and DJ through a consistent release of singles and remixes for W+L, as well as Permanent Vacation, K7, and Bedrock to name a few. With Everything (We Are), Cavanagh sets out to deliver a preview of the diversity that will be expressed in the great number of songs set to be released in the coming year, and longly anticipated LP.

The organic foundation is laid early with the funk fueled Miss White. A song steered by it's live rhythm section, vocals, guitar, as well as it's elaborate arrangement. Second Fiddle, a staple in Slow Hands' recent live sets, is the very epitome of his traditional verse/chorus composition style over loose and energetic beats. The EP slows tempo with it's title ballad Everything (We Are), a display of Cavanagh's recently discovered raw vocals, and a powerfully emotional chorus, reinforced by the vocals of Dave Robertson.

Robertson, more widely known as Cameo Culture, who also acts as co-producer, and musician on this release, concludes the EP with a compelling rendition of the title song. Driving things home with a more rock inspired re-harmonization of Everything (We Are), Robertson augments what will be the theme of all forthcoming Slow Hands' releases; organics, musicianship, and diversity.

Review: It's quite a surprise that perennial Italian disco jammer DJ Rocca hasn't linked up with Rothmans before, but on the label's first release of 2016 he makes up for lost time with a grip of tracks positively dripping with full-fat synthy goodness. "Kratos" packs in a serious Italo thrum with its wonderful arpeggio bassline, bursting with optimism as every buoyant lead line piles on top of the forward-marching beat. "400 Fonk" meanwhile flips the script with a cheeky, bouncy beast of an analogue jam to get heads nodding like Wally Badarou just took the controls. Daniele Baldelli then blasts "Kratos" into the stratosphere with his muscular "Electropsychomix".

Review: Blast away those gloomy clouds with this wonderful set from the Street Edits clan. Having previously been spotted on Lumberjacks In Hell with Rahaan, it's evident that Sean Sounds knows exactly what he's doing when giving classic funk and disco a tasteful re-rub. "Disco Child" on the B-side is likely the big party starter, but there's grade A soul to be soaked up elsewhere too. "Rock Your Bones" is an especially sunny jam with African flair in its bones, while record closer "Get Up & Party" has a classic 70s Motown feel to it. In the face of overly slick re-edits this is a release with a welcome grittiness to it.

The imprint's latest release comes from newcomer Paul Withey, who follows up a fine contribution to a recent split E.O on Ruby Hills & Diamond Mountain, with a debut solo E.P of his own. The five tracks featured are nicely varied stylistically, but all boast the distinctive shimmer of analogue synthesizers and dusty drum machines. Highlights include the surging Italo-disco revivalism of "Pallas", cheerily positive synth-pop flex of "Yes Master", and the curious, Radiophonic Workshop style weirdness of "Beneath the Surface".

Review: Back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history "Melodiya", many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called "Magnitizdat" (short of Magnetic Tape Release). It began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. In the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj's mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. Plus Seven Records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.
