  1. Gnd Lift
  2. J'ai Mange Des Nerfs
  3. Animals Don't Mind
Review: After a recent excellent outing on the Jealous God label, In Aeternam Vale returns for Minimal Wave duty with the Gnd Lift 12". The long running project of Lyon artist Laurent Prot, the 12" focussed archival transmissions on Minimal Wave tend to be some of the label's best releases and that is certainly the case here. Lead track "Gnd Lift" weighs in at a mighty 14 minutes and is up there with "Dust Under Brightness" in our favourite IA V mind benders; serious slowed down murky proto techno vibes! Complementing this J'ai Mange Des Nerfs" echoes some of Prot's earlier wave-based experiments and "Animals Don't Mind" is the epitome of foreboding primitive electronics. Pressed on 160 gram clear transparent deep purple vinyl and housed in another excellent sleeve from Veronica Vasicka.

  2. Topaz Fear (7:02)
  3. Death Wish (6:50)
  4. Golden Taurus (Heinrich Dressel remix) (5:52)
Review: Crimes Of The Future is the kind of label you can trust, no matter who is at the controls. The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.

  2. Eyes Of Glass (instrumental) (7:13)
Review: To accompany their re-release of East Wall's superb 1991 debut album, Silence, Dark Entries has decided to put out the Italian band's forgotten debut release, 1985 single "Eye of Glass". Tending towards the darker end of the Italo-disco spectrum, but blessed with typically cheery synthesizer melodies and skewed female vocals, it's a record that seems far more inspired by the earlier British new wave synth-pop movement than pleasing the clubs of Rome or Rimini. The vocal version is accompanied by a subtly different instrumental, which includes waves of warm synths and offers more prominence to the band's bubbly electronics, throbbing arpeggio bassline, and delay-laden drum machine hits.

Review: Fresh from releasing the superb Pink Flamingos album on Dement3d, In Aternam Vale returns to Minimal Wave. This time round, he's not alone. Each of the tracks features the breathy, stylish vocals of Madrid-based Belarusian, Anneq. Her sleazy, whispered refrain is the headline attraction on the throbbing, industrial pop-meets-techno hustle of "Je Ai Dissous", while she also chats seductively over the undulating arpeggio lines, restless drums and dystopian atmospheres of "Tendencia (About Blank Version"). The ambient-leaning "V6" take of that cut is also hugely inspiring, while the Page R version of "Je Ai Dissous" is a dark, atmospheric and intoxicating celebration of legendary '80s "computer musical instrument", the Fairlight CMI.

Review: If you have a serious interest in Italo-disco, you should already be aware of Kirlian Camera. For the uninitiated, Angelo Bergamini's band was founded in 1980, and has been a constant presence on the Italian music scene ever since. "Helden Platz" was originally released in 1987, and is one of the standout moments in their bulging discography. Full of Cold War-era paranoia, the A-side extended version is dark, gothic and stylish, with impassioned female vocals riding body-popping machine drums, moody chords and a mind-altering arpeggio bassline. On the flip you'll find the notably different 7" version, and the gripping dark ambient of "Burial".

  1. Transdance (GC1 version) (5:21)
  2. Life Up (demo) (6:03)
Review: The mythical Transdance from UK duo Night Moves is given a much needed official repress by Domestica Records and the Barcelona label have spared no expense. A limited pressing of 400 10"s come housed in hand screen printed sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. Despite the paucity of Night Moves discography, it's clear the duo of Michael Guihen and John Davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. Transdance was originally released as a limited 12" white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of Europe and New York City yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. Original copies of the GC1 pressing of Transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on Discogs so kudos to Domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut "Life Up" on the flip.

Review: Originally released in 1979, Francesco Cabiati's Mirage is a classic slice of holy grail electronic prog that has been searched for and fawned over for years by avid collectors. Now Galaxy have scored the record as their opening gambit, which should satisfy more than a few second hand vigilantes out there. It's a bombastic offering rich in Moog lines and dramatic themes, much like all the great instrumental synth offerings of the era. From the faithful treatment of the cover and labels to the quality of the remastering, it's everything a classic reissue of a hidden gem should be.

Review: Blancmange were a British synth-pop outfit which surfaced out of the late 1970's and thanks to the power of Record Store Day, the infamous Cherry Red imprint has put out their "I Want More" single from their last Semi Detached LP accompanied by a fine remix, indeed! The original is a robotic, interstellar disco tune with one hell of a vocal loop: a ringing, pulsating chant which'll get you singing in no time. London's bass wizard Applebottom is called up for the remix duties and his own version is a militant tech-house rework with a bubbling bassline and some pretty killer percussion work!

Review: Aside form being a poignant and startling presence on our charts, the Mannequin label is doing plenty of justice to Italy's industrial past. Throughout the last few years, label head Alessandro Adriani has resurfaced a whole heap of incredible music from the European peninsula, and this single by the shady Flo & Andrew is a perfect example of that. Released in 1981, "Take Suicide" is a deranged pic of music, like a cavernous wave of distorted sonics and technoid power beats, it truly makes us wonder what these two dudes were smoking back in the early 80s! On the flip, things turn even weirder thanks to the ominous bleeps and sonics of "To Committ Suicide", followed by a sublime porterhouse number called "Japanese Girls". The synths on the latter are particularly reminiscent of Mr Fingers' best output. A touch of class, and an excellent reissue. 5 stars.

Review: Biff! Dark Entries is on one of their famous rolls right now! We thought that after Portion Control's much needed reissue, the label were going to run out of steam but here they are again Van Kaye and Ignit's A Slight Delay, a tape cassette originally released in the early 1980's which has been hidden in the coils of time ever since. The Arnhem university duo were fascinated by percussive electronic rhythms and their collaboration works wonders, where lo-fi beats meet punky vocals in a fun yet sinister kinda mood. To be honest, this is just pure coldwave magic for all you collector-fiends out there and you'd be silly not to purchase because the only other way you'll find it is looking through millions of cassettes in weird junk shops.

Review: Rubella Ballet's 1982 debut, the cassette-only Ballet Bag, has long been a sought-after item amongst the post-punk community. Happily, Dark Entries has licensed it and made it available on vinyl for the first time. Lavishly packaged and accompanied by two previously unseen photos and a replica of the original zine with lyrics and drawings by the band, Ballet Bag is one of the better examples of DIY punk-rock from the period. Energetic, stylish and immediate in feel, it has aged well in the 25 years since it was first released, which is not something you can say about many homemade style punk albums.

Review: Imperious and unpredictable throughout the course of their releases in 2013, Dutch label Gooiland Elektro resurface with what we presume is their final two part transmission of the year, with the focus here on Swedish singer and songwriter Saralunden. The Gothenburg based Sara Lunden lands on the Enfant Terrible sub label with quite a discography to her name, operating on numerous DIY labels in her homeland and issuing everything from avant garde dark wave and synth pop to more downtempo fare. Some four tracks deep, the Suggestive Boy 12" will appeal to fans of acts like Chromatics or Sally Shapiro looking for something a bit darker, moody and world weary - "I Look Good" is a particular highlight.

Review: Two generations of French minimal wave feature here on an excellent 12" from the Electric Voices label. Phillipe Laurent will be familiar to most thanks to the 2011 issue of his work under the Hot Bip alias on Minimal Wave, and his induction into the Electric Voice annals takes on a similarly archival approach. The A-side features a fully remastered version of "Exposition 1", which formed part of the uber-rare Kunstaustellung tape Laurent issued on the DTW label in 1985 and sounds staggeringly ahead of its time. Complementing this, HNN's Gregg Anthe collaborates with Electric Voice duo Jeff And Jane Hudson on "Authority," a track tinged with the sort of political subtext that Oppenheimer Analysis were famous for.

Review: If you're into your '80s cold/no wave filth then Medical's Electroconvulsive Therapy series are the tickets for you! The fearless reissue label have put out seriously definitive collections of the post-punk era, ranging from vocal-led synth-pop to more industrial and cavernous proto-techno beats, and this third chapter of the ET branch - an RSD 2015 special - is another gorgeous ten tracks of rare-as-hell experimental music from the golden era of creativity. You can hear shreds of Joy Division's massive influence on 80's music in tracks like "Who Cares" by Leidenschaft or "Betrayal" by Secession. However, there's also plenty of disco/boogie-filtered action on cuts like "Look!" by VUD and "The Cities Of The Red Night", another track from Leidenschaft. It's a compilation for romantics, a sector of society who is in love with that era's sense of bittersweet melancholia. Lovely.

Review: Originally a folk guitarist from Baltimore in the 1960's, Gary Blanchard's musical career only took off twenty years later with something totally different and unexpected. Something that may have been too far ahead of its time back in the 80s, but that sounds just right hearing it in 2016. Entitled Original Soundtrack, this is Blanchard's only LP and is about as far from folk as techno is from classical; there's a similarity in texture and mood, perhaps, but the construction of the songs are a world apart. Coming out through Spain's excellent Domestica label, Gary Blanchard's album is a one-off piece of minimal experimentation of the highest calibre. It is drenched in a familiar 80's romanticism and melancholia, but tunes like "Polyester From Hell", or "Technology Mythology" are blissful drum machine experiments that look in every possible direction in terms of influences. Check it, there's some gold in there.

Review: Famous for releasing electro, synthwave and italo disco on the Italian Records imprint back in the 80's, the NOIA crew had become synonymous with the Mediterranean disco sound that swallowed the 1980's whole like a plate of pasta. Many of the group's EPs are much sought after these days, but Fabio Carlucci's JAM Traxx has now released this new LP, Aion, that sees the group resurrected for the 2016 coldwave comeback. This album will appeal to anyone with a thirst for that 80's electronic sound without the commercial thrills or the predictable 'romanticism' sound that took most of that scene over by the end. Quirky, lively and uninterested with fads or trends, NOIA's music is wild, diverse and coated in a retro-futuristic vibe that we love.

Review: Estonian-in-Brooklyn Maria Minerva has built up a reputation for being hard-to-pigeonhole, releasing a string of albums that variously join the dots between skewed pop, coldwave, dreamy downtempo oddities, sci-fi tinged electronica and wonky bass music. There's more of this loose, lo-fi eccentricity on this fourth solo full-length for regular home Not Not Fun. Summarizing it is tricky, though Minerva's woozy, quirky vocals and curious lyrics are a constant. This helps draw together the disparate musical strands. By the end, it almost makes perfect sense - though repeat listens are recommended. It's certainly a special set.

Review: If you thought that synth-pop was dead nowadays then Element 104 are surely the ones to lift the genre from its supposed grave. Busting their meandering electro-vocal charms out on Kernkrach - Heinz Stelte's long-running imprint - the trio offer two driving dancefloor cuts with utterly memorable lyrics and one hell of a guitar riff, the former sounding like it's come straight out of an '80s pulp B-movie, and the latter heading down more psychedelic territories in the company of metallic drum machines and that neo-romantic swagger. Lovely stuff.

Review: One half of the mystical Haussmann outfit, the talented Claude Violante steps into the limelight with a self-titled EP that brandishes her own delicious amalgamations of bitter-sweet synth-pop and ritualistic electronic jams. Coming through on France's Digital Tsunami - an imprint reserved solely for the most daring of pop works - her four track EP contains a little bit of everything for everyone. "For You" combines crispy funk breaks together with nostalgic melodies to create one hell of a wall of sound, not to mention her own majestic vocals gliding high and mighty in the background. "Your Way" shoots a 4/4 house beat down the gullet of some truly gnarly synth low-ends which oscillate into oblivion, whereas "Generation" is a nutty, twisted downtempo drum workout. "Parade" is perhaps our favourite moment, where Violante goes for an old-school NY vibe recalling some of Larry Levan's best DJ moments. TOP TIP!

Review: It's fair to say that Medical Records can now be considered as one of the best and most interesting reissue labels on the planet. With a catalogue which includes everyone from Severed Heads to Alexander Robotnick and even Seefeel, they most certainly know how to deal in quality products! For this latest episode, the label have dug up the only LP ever made by Hamburg-based synth freaks, TSE TSE, and it's a right stormer. The story goes that Claas Mehlhop and Clement H?lse met in the early eighties around the city's trendiest clubs and immediately hit it off. The amalgamated drum machines, cheap synthesizers, a cassette recorder and produced Land In Sicht. The sounds are quirky, the beats fast and there's an almost religious twang to some of their melodies, something which makes this LP both stand out and a perfect relic of it's time. In 1983, this is what went down in Hamburg's coolest spots!

Review: Barcelona's Domestica label continue their experimental excursions into the underbelly of contemporary coldwave and industrial synth-pop with a reissue of the self-titled LP from mid '80s darkwave outfit Moloko +. Taking their name from Clockwork Orange, Moloko+ self-released this set in 1986 and it's bristling with the sort of percussion-driven electronic melancholia we expect from Domestica. From "Fields Of War" to "In Meiner Taschen", Moloko + grinds and chugs its way across vast soundscapes of proggy guitar riffs and vocals very typical of the period. Punk, coldwave, pop and funky synthesizer sounds are mashed up and broken down into an unforgettable journey, the sort of music you want to pump through your car speakers on a journey across the universe. Classy and edgy.

Review: The work of the California-based Anthony Boruch, Duskrunner is something of a sequel to the cult underground hit Dawnrunner, which set the aesthetic stall out for this lo-fi slacker alchemist. Here, however, he branches out somewhat from the hazy, monochrome stylings of his earlier efforts, shaping what were 4-track drone-vortexes into more fully-formed sound worlds that maintain the dusky aura and repetitive hypnosis that have become his trademark. Lurking somewhere on the sonic map between early Cluster and recent Sun Araw, Swanox may also be located in an eternal bedroom studio of the mind, yet spiritually this album gestures towards the celestial.

Review: There's not much information out there about Soundlego, but their music more than speaks for itself as touches of Italo, coldwave and electro get distilled down into bright and brash constructs brimming with playful creativity. At times it gets feisty and downright bonkers (see the rollercoaster ride of Philly strings and liquid funk "Die Grosse Ruhe"), and in other places a more house influenced focus comes into play (as on the eminently bouncy "Meisterstucke"). Through the myriad styles touched upon by Soundlego, there is undoubtedly something to inspire any electronic music-attuned head on Draussen.

Review: In the ever-fertile soil under which innumerable DIY synth pop acts are buried, Laugh Clown Laugh are but the latest to be revived with a lovingly restored LP that never saw the light of day back in the early 80s when the band were originally active. Their sound draws heavily from the likes of The Human League once they started writing songs, with bright and chirpy arpeggios matched to twee English vocals with that unmistakable homespun charm. At the time their music may have been overlooked, but now Laugh Clown Laugh are in just the right time and place to have their work appraised again.
