  3. In All My Days (Imami remix)
Review: Bristol label Crazylegs seem to be gaining traction as West Country brethren to London label Local Action, and hopefully this delayed fifth 12" (cheers RSD) from Tommy Rawson will see this rise continue. Available digitally since late June, "All My Days" is clearly geared as something of a summer cut by the label, a Motown leaning house production that falls in line with Rawson's prior output for the prolific Local Talk label. It's complemented well by remixes from Maddslinky and Imani that pull the track in vastly differing directions, as all good reworks should! The Underwater Dub from Dave Slinky takes the track into dark broken territory, whilst Imani's contribution is a real thing of beauty. Rawson's original is barely recognisable, it's various elements mutated into a drum heavy exercise in future boogie.

Review: Vellico is the new collaborative project Ross Tones - better known as Throwing Snow - and his brother Ali. Arriving on Tones' own Snowfall label, it's as richly textured as you'd expect, daubing the usual Tones palette of autumnal synth shades over four robust club tracks. "Pennines" combines Border Community style arpeggio twists with a chunky house beat and contemporary vocal sampling, while "133G" features a droning bassline and Four Tet-like bleeps together with galloping rhythms. "Beck's Brew" meanwhile combines junglist subs with a '90s house feel, while "The Peace Signal" is the opposite of its name, a dark piece of rumbling analogue techno which takes Tones' sound into gripping new places.

Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

Review: Schmorgasbord Records continues to examine the creative results of collaborative experimentation within contemporary electronic music, following releases from Appleblim & October, Spatial & S-Max, Al Tourettes & Paradroid and Bass Clef & Frak.

Pev is one of the leading lights of the fertile Bristol music scene, responsible for the hugely influential Punch Drunk and Livity Sound labels, as well as numerous releases on Tectonic, Skull Disco, Hessle Audio and The Trilogy Tapes.

Steevio is the co-founder of Mindtours Records and the Freerotation electronic music festival. His live improvised techno performances on modular synthesisers have been witnessed in Berghain in Berlin, Concrete in Paris, Corsica Studios in London and many more besides.

The two artists created original tracks and then remixed / reinterpreted each others work resulting in truly unique tracks neither artist would have conjured up otherwise.

Review: Sounds like an individual, actually a duo. Elson David is brothers Duct and Owen Howells, and this is their very first release together. Largely coated in classic acid house references, there are plenty of surprises on offer to keep you on your toes. The title track is especially interesting; rolling with a Pierre style acid and bounce-bass technique, it quickly morphs into an infectious p-funk hybrid before hitting some seriously spiky high notes. Looking for Maurice-style acid stomp session? Then flip for "Woke" and turn those lights off.

Review: London singer Py lays down her darkest, most reflective vocals to date on this smoky, electronic lullaby. Coming across with a touch of Massive Attack, it showcases Py's versatility on a whole new level. Remix-wise past collaborator Throwing Snow unleashes a gritty, industrial strength warehouse version, Gang Colours get all Balearic with a lolloping beat, drifting keys and woozy guitars, Sweater Beats experiment with classic electro ingredients and contemporary dynamics while slap down a bold reverberated 4/4 idea. Each remix writes a whole new chapter for an already exciting book where Py plays the consummate lead role.

Review: A new release from Bass Clef is always something we enjoy here at Juno, with the latest finding Ralph Cumbers adding emergent Belfast concern to his storied discography. Humming Blurs is actually the first 'Clef joint of 2015 and it finds the pun loving producer in fine fettle, channelling two distinct moods across the pair of productions. Leading the way, "Humming Blurs" pairs sprightly, swung percussion and thunderous bursts of hi hats with delightfully chiming melodies and strings and kind of sounds like vintage Four Tet pulled into the 21st Century. On the B-side "Chanson Du Ricochet" is a smeared modular delight with a rhythmic freneticism that is most infectious.

  4. Will Saul & Kommon - "Two For One" (Appleblim remix) (6:29)
Review: As a follow-up to Will Saul's exclusive-packed - and generally well received - DJ Kicks set, !K7 has decided to reissue two of the most celebrated tracks, with fresh new remixes. On the A-side you'll find Jabru and Joel Culpepper's "Church" - a decidedly organic, soulful chunk of deep house/UK garage fusion - with accompanying Zed Bias rub. The UKG veteran gives it a bouncy, bassy two-step makeover, wisely retaining Culpepper's brilliant vocals. Flip for Will Saul and Komon's spacey "Two For One", where dreamy flourishes rub shoulders with throbbing electronics and delicate house beats. The remix is provided by Appleblim, who adds a new layer of percussive toughness - in a bruk-meets-two-step style - whilst retaining the warmth of the original.

Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

  2. Heaven Sent
Review: It's been at least a hot minute since the last heavyweight release from Swamp 81 dropped (and they don't get much heavier than a double pack of body music from Boddika). The wait has totally been worth it as Funkbias sees UKG legend Zed Bias team up with Rinse FM's excellently named Funk Butcher for two drops of typically forward thinking music. "Last Forever" burst uneasily out of the rumbling groove that opens the track into masterful concoction of vocal affectations, burning synth beams, snapping tribal drums and trademark Zed Bias bass. "Heaven Sent" does indeed begin like it was sent from above with gentle piano melodies lulling you in before being engulfed by a heavily pressurised flex of 808s and more crafty vocal dicing. The interplay between the soft and harsh elements is quite brilliant. Those who like a fine example of cover art will go weak at the knees over the Will Bankhead embossed design too.

Review: The first single to be taken from Maya Jane Coles' new dub-minded Nocturnal Sunshine project, both "Take Me There" and "Never Too Late" explore the fertile pastures amid the tech/dub axis with garage-minded glee. The former is a relentless, jittering stepper peppered with an array of twisted processed vocals. The latter, meanwhile, comes with more of Get Physical-style tubular bass and thundering rhythm that will sit in almost any style DJ's playlist from deep house to dubstep. If you like these, you'll love the album.

Review: SLV comprises Shanghai producer Downstate and Tokyo-based Hamacide. While the title of their debut release "Dagger" suggests sharp, cut-throat riddims, there's a much softer, richer sound amidst their slo-mo trappisms. Think Bassnectar's early material. Think Moby. Think beautiful. For something much sharper head to Desto's remix. Upping the tempo with footwork fury, it's the perfect foil to the title's dreamy dedication.

Review: Well Rounded Records revealed their intentions to cease operating as a standard record label at the end of the year for wholly admirable reasons, and they'll truly be missed for anyone with a real interest in current strains of bass music. Since their 2009 inception, Well Rounded has steered clear of the tepid, zeitgeist chasing end of the bass music spectrum and remained true to the rugged and rude hardcore continuum. This two track 12" from Nottingham veteran Geiom is a case in point. "2 4 6" is a bastard melding of UK Funky rhythmics and nascent Detroit electro augmented by some rude vocal work from Terrible Shock. It's blessed by a remix from the Finnish school of excellence too with a spinal tapped Scandinavian carnival refix from the man like Desto.

Review: The latest 12" from the Froth' N US label overseen by the wonderfully named Don Froth is an almighty sound clash between London, Detroit and Los Angeles. Last seen providing the bruk house anthem "Lifting Weights" to We Are Family Vol. 1, the maiden 12? release from WNCL Recordings, Froth returns to the scene of his Reflex EP for UNO with a quartet of heavy duty remixes. Froth himself provides two reworks and he's complemented by the presence of Mr West Norwood Cassette Library and the all round Detroit legend that is Anthony 'Shake' Shakir who adds that extra touch of class with a typically manic percussive take on the title track.

The alter ego of 20 year old Joseph Zucco, JLSUS MILLION has by and large become known for his behind the buttons work, adding some production weight to last year's Illusions Of record by Charlie XCX's as well as collaborating with Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard. Error is quite a watershed moment for Zucco then, and the three original cuts suggest JLSUS MILLION is comparable to a turbo charged Clams Casino. Review: James Blake temporarily downs tools as a melancholic sub-pop crooner to pick up close to where he left off with releases on Hemlock and Hessle Audio back in the day. For his own 1800 Dinosaur label he invites Javan St. Prix, aka grime MC Trim, to spit rhymes like "I surf waves most men drown in" over Blake-made digital vibraphone tones and syncopated, computer game basslines. On the flip, Trim, who's appeared on Keysound, Butterz and R&S in the past, dons the gloves for a second round called "Man Like Me", this time produced by Airhead who strips the melodies back for shuddering beats and strange, jingling percussion. Fresh.

Review: It's been a sizable amount of time since the Don't Be Afraid main man dropped some new wares of his own, but now Semtek is back in action and appearing on Niche N' Bump with a two-pronged sure shot steeped in modern crossover concerns. The lead track "Bad Teeth" fuses metallic Detroit chord stabs with Yorkshire low end throb, and a laconic house jack makes this a slow and sizzling burner as sleazy as it is weighty. "John Of Worcester" meanwhile amps up some eerie sci-fi synth flurries and drops a cool and deadly break beat over the top of them. It's a considered and hugely effective return to the fray that hopefully spells more Semtek to come in the future.

Fusing lo-fi fuzzy house with generous dollops of bass and an almost Detroit sensibility, there's more than a touch of the Weatheralls throughout the release. Core moments include the off-kilter funk of the bass whinges on "Peier Field", the wafting jazz horns of "Angiogram" and the sludgy sci-fi groove on "Contact". An accomplished debut.

Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: Tom 'Dam Mantle' Marshallsay and Rich McMaster from Golden Teacher were first granted an outlet as General Ludd through Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter's Mister Saturday Night last year with the breathless pair of house burners that made up the Woo Ha 12". Since then the General has brought the Luddite house sound to Clan Destine, 10 Thousand Yen and Autonomous Africa among others and now lands back on the Mister for the keenly anticipated Are You Losing My Hearing? Another two-track exercise in 12" dynamism, the title cut finds GL in sprightly house mood with a rubbery feel not too dissimilar to Gerd's Geeeman output. Flip it over and "Moneychangers" veers off into more dystopian, heads down territory with some killer modular squiggles throughout.

This week, however, they launch the newly found Husoptagelser imprint with a devious little 7" that goes further away form the dance floor, and deeper into your mind. "Foxiest Funkdrive" soounds exactly like its name, a stumbling, quirky pile of kick drums splattered all over a minimal harmonic rhythm, and electronic manipulation - class. The flip sees "Centigrade Duckfucker" twist the groove further still, coming out with a glitchy pile of claps and drums, driven forwards by icy shreds of sonics. A definite tip, if we've ever seen one!

  4. Matrix Wave (4:44)
Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

Review: Racer Productions came steam-rolling through the scene earlier this year with an excellent debut single from Emma De Seze, and now the label are back with another fresh name, the supremely talented newcomer Mischa Lively. "Pillow" sounds like it's come from the hands of highly experienced producer - someone like Joey Anderson - and its rickety, off-kilter percussion is full of swing and pleasure; "Blakeup" breaks down the rigid 4/4 groove in favour of a more twisted, kick-heavy hybrid cut. "A Posture For Thought" is considerably more stripped-down and carries more of a techno swag, while "Held Open" once again tears the house format down to a jittery, dub-infused vibe.

Review: Rounding up another year of dark experiments, Nervous Horizon invite Second Storey to bring 2016 to the warped, wrangled close it deserves. Hot on the heels of his "Bismuth" EP and Appleblim collaborations come three more adventures in pastures unclaimed: "Spin Cycle" is a grainy, decaying hypnosis loop, "Critters" is the type of two-step the devil dances to while "Sludge 3D" is a pounding slab of lo-fi fuzzy techno that unravels into a brilliantly trippy drum arrangement. Three tracks, three tales, one Storey.

Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Off the planetary hook.

Review: From the Label: "IN BLOOD" is the stunning 4th album from UK based multi instrumentalist, Sunset Graves. Following up 2015's acclaimed opus 'Love Pours Into Death', this brand new album goes deeper and darker with sonics for casual beat heads and intertwining textures to reward the deepest of repeat listens. This is Sunset Graves in widescreen, journeying through genres and landscapes, incorporating ambient, drum n' bass, glitchy rhythms, bass music, field recordings, sound design, tech house, chamber orchestra and even post rock. 3rd & Debut Records releases eclectic electronic music by Sunset Graves, the sample based Lo Grounds (as featured on Joris Voorns Fabric 83) and the more experimental soundscapes of tpique. IN BLOOD is our first full length vinyl release, presented on deep black virgin wax, black inner sleeve and a full colour insert. Supported by Earmilk, Textura and The Formant.
