Review: Of the many fresh faces that have come to light on Pinch's Cold Recordings, Manchester-based artist Acre has represented one of the most diverse propositions with his spots on Lost Codes (and more recently Codes), but he also has managed to follow label mate Ipman in bridging the gap over to Pinch's original institutional imprint Tectonic. After the Icons EP back in 2014, Acre now steps up with an album which fully explores his unique take on UK bass traditions. There is a lot to take in at first glance, from experimental excursions such as "Spiral" through to winsome beat studies such as "Always Crashing", with plenty of room for moody attitude in a reflection of the ever mutating definition of British soundsystem music.

Review: Lars "Anstam" Stoewe has long been part of Modeselektor's extended family of artists, releasing his first two albums on their 50 Weapons label. While those first two sets were characterized by a desire to blend punishing dancefloor rhytms with elements of IDM and dark ambience, Names - his third LP - is a largely more considered affair, with shards of light amongst the gathering gloom. Of course, he's not totally abandoned the skittering rhythms and maudlin basslines - see the sweeping chords and intense beats of "I Stopped Counting" and the rushing post-dubstep blast of "Fragments of the Good Old Days" - but these moments are countered by hazy songs and sweet soundscapes, with the superb "The Obvious & The Impeccable" standing out.

Review: A new release from Bass Clef is always something we enjoy here at Juno, with the latest finding Ralph Cumbers adding emergent Belfast concern to his storied discography. Humming Blurs is actually the first 'Clef joint of 2015 and it finds the pun loving producer in fine fettle, channelling two distinct moods across the pair of productions. Leading the way, "Humming Blurs" pairs sprightly, swung percussion and thunderous bursts of hi hats with delightfully chiming melodies and strings and kind of sounds like vintage Four Tet pulled into the 21st Century. On the B-side "Chanson Du Ricochet" is a smeared modular delight with a rhythmic freneticism that is most infectious.

Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

Review: Sounds like an individual, actually a duo. Elson David is brothers Duct and Owen Howells, and this is their very first release together. Largely coated in classic acid house references, there are plenty of surprises on offer to keep you on your toes. The title track is especially interesting; rolling with a Pierre style acid and bounce-bass technique, it quickly morphs into an infectious p-funk hybrid before hitting some seriously spiky high notes. Looking for Maurice-style acid stomp session? Then flip for "Woke" and turn those lights off.

  4. Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: The latest 12" from the Froth' N US label overseen by the wonderfully named Don Froth is an almighty sound clash between London, Detroit and Los Angeles. Last seen providing the bruk house anthem "Lifting Weights" to We Are Family Vol. 1, the maiden 12? release from WNCL Recordings, Froth returns to the scene of his Reflex EP for UNO with a quartet of heavy duty remixes. Froth himself provides two reworks and he's complemented by the presence of Mr West Norwood Cassette Library and the all round Detroit legend that is Anthony 'Shake' Shakir who adds that extra touch of class with a typically manic percussive take on the title track.

Review: Well Rounded Records revealed their intentions to cease operating as a standard record label at the end of the year for wholly admirable reasons, and they'll truly be missed for anyone with a real interest in current strains of bass music. Since their 2009 inception, Well Rounded has steered clear of the tepid, zeitgeist chasing end of the bass music spectrum and remained true to the rugged and rude hardcore continuum. This two track 12" from Nottingham veteran Geiom is a case in point. "2 4 6" is a bastard melding of UK Funky rhythmics and nascent Detroit electro augmented by some rude vocal work from Terrible Shock. It's blessed by a remix from the Finnish school of excellence too with a spinal tapped Scandinavian carnival refix from the man like Desto.

Review: Tom 'Dam Mantle' Marshallsay and Rich McMaster from Golden Teacher were first granted an outlet as General Ludd through Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter's Mister Saturday Night last year with the breathless pair of house burners that made up the Woo Ha 12". Since then the General has brought the Luddite house sound to Clan Destine, 10 Thousand Yen and Autonomous Africa among others and now lands back on the Mister for the keenly anticipated Are You Losing My Hearing? Another two-track exercise in 12" dynamism, the title cut finds GL in sprightly house mood with a rubbery feel not too dissimilar to Gerd's Geeeman output. Flip it over and "Moneychangers" veers off into more dystopian, heads down territory with some killer modular squiggles throughout.

Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

Review: Notable for being one of the foremost exponents of a combination of grime and dubstep that came to be known as the "purple sound" alongside Gemmy and Joker, Bristol producer Guido's intricate approach to melodic composition was perhaps best explored on Anieda, his 2010 album for Peverelist's Punch Drunk label. Although the relevance of "purple" as a critical term has perhaps waned somewhat in the years that have passed since then, traces of the sound can still be heard in the myriad forms of bass music so prevalent today. Aside from an odd 12", Guido has been largely quiet; evidently hard at work on a second LP for Tectonic! Moods Of Future Joy features two collaborations with vocalist Emma Lou and expands Guido's palette, taking in the producer's grounding in jazz and classical music, with subtle Afrobeat influences also present.

Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Off the planetary hook.

The alter ego of 20 year old Joseph Zucco, JLSUS MILLION has by and large become known for his behind the buttons work, adding some production weight to last year's Illusions Of record by Charlie XCX's as well as collaborating with Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard. Error is quite a watershed moment for Zucco then, and the three original cuts suggest JLSUS MILLION is comparable to a turbo charged Clams Casino. Comes with remixes from Magical Mistakes and Taquwami.

On the A-side you'll find Jabru and Joel Culpepper's "Church" - a decidedly organic, soulful chunk of deep house/UK garage fusion - with accompanying Zed Bias rub. The UKG veteran gives it a bouncy, bassy two-step makeover, wisely retaining Culpepper's brilliant vocals. Flip for Will Saul and Komon's spacey "Two For One", where dreamy flourishes rub shoulders with throbbing electronics and delicate house beats. The remix is provided by Appleblim, who adds a new layer of percussive toughness - in a bruk-meets-two-step style - whilst retaining the warmth of the original.

  1. Run
  2. Is It Me (Walking mix)
Review: This cheeky little White Label from San Francisco-based producer Jim E Stack - he of Hyetal and Sky Ferreira fame - courtesy of the Innovative Leisure label that pulls together two tracks that have been causing some serious commotion on his Soundcloud page. Appearing on music hype barometer Pitchfork last year, "Is It Me" was described as sounding "like a car that just won't start" but really it's all about the subtle ways in which Jim E Stack twists the vocal harmony this way and that to form the most unlikely of club bangers. Complementing this, "Run" shows off the producer's deft drum editing and arranging skills as a barrage of samples are fed frenetically through the shredder.

Review: Reckno drop an absolute clusterbomb with a vinyl edition of a collaboration between two of the most unique artists on their already jam-packed roster! The self-titled Skyler & Law sees Hamish Travis aka Kinlaw team up with Joane Skyler for an LP of beat-ridden, lo-fi electronics. There's a touch of everything in there, such as the jungle breaks surrounding the quirky melodies on the opener "Mini Boss Moon Base", or the broken house groove of "Higher Than 44", or even the slo-mo hip-hop vibes of "RIPE". These guys can conjure up just about anything, and it all sounds truly gorgeous as a final product. Be sure to check this as it comes warmly recommended.

Review: Brit in Melbourne Kloke follows up previous releases on this impressive NYC label (and sterling effort in 2014 on Sub Squared) with something different. The intense Latin percussion workout of "PHONE" sounds like Sergio Mendes on steroids in this relentless epic, while "Rhythm #1" is more restrained in its exotic execution. Jamal Moss does an impressive job as ever on the remix. His analogue hardware jam turning the track into something else completely.

Review: Lrusse & Bleecker sound as if they're as Dutch as Audio Culture itself. Turns out they're actually from Bristol, and this is their debut EP. Fusing lo-fi fuzzy house with generous dollops of bass and an almost Detroit sensibility, there's more than a touch of the Weatheralls throughout the release. Core moments include the off-kilter funk of the bass whinges on "Peier Field", the wafting jazz horns of "Angiogram" and the sludgy sci-fi groove on "Contact". An accomplished debut.

Review: Racer Productions came steam-rolling through the scene earlier this year with an excellent debut single from Emma De Seze, and now the label are back with another fresh name, the supremely talented newcomer Mischa Lively. "Pillow" sounds like it's come from the hands of highly experienced producer - someone like Joey Anderson - and its rickety, off-kilter percussion is full of swing and pleasure; "Blakeup" breaks down the rigid 4/4 groove in favour of a more twisted, kick-heavy hybrid cut. "A Posture For Thought" is considerably more stripped-down and carries more of a techno swag, while "Held Open" once again tears the house format down to a jittery, dub-infused vibe.

Review: End Of Level Boss is a joint project from Cyclonix and Tusk Wax celebrating the world of video game tech-nostalgia through electronic music. The label follows up it's debut Ganondorf EP, with the Scorpion EP, named after the resurrected ninja from Mortal Kombat, who is the game's greatest anti-hero, with the battle cry "vengeance will be mine". The Scorpion EP features tracks by Si Murray (of Deep Space Orchestra) under his Mogadishu Young Team persona, label boss Cyclonix, and producers Robert S and Nant Rouge.

Review: Hailing from the ever-fertile climes of L.A, Nguzunguzu look set to break through with this sprawling release on Hippos In Tanks. It's hard to latch on to a specific angle the duo are coming from, so fluid is their approach to constructing collages of samples. There's a pervading tension that hovers just overhead at all times, sometimes manifested in spectral voices, sometimes in ghostly chimes, but it comes no clearer than in the X-Files aping melodic hook of "Drop Cage." The production shimmers and shivers with a plethora of signifiers from jungle to dubstep via coke rap, but really it's the loaded atmosphere that will draw you in.
