Russian producer Anton Zap is renowned for the deepness of his house and techno productions, but rarely has he gone as subterranean as the two tracks on the latest Ethereal Sounds release. "Water" is stunning in the deepness of its grooves and gently undulating chords. It brilliantly fuses sparse, shuffling techno rhythms with the sort of drifting, heart-aching melodies that could leave Larry Heard weeping tears of joy. As a piece of electronic music it's sublime. Flipside "Road Trip Song" is more obviously dancefloor friendly, but no less deep. Zap peppers a low-end heavy dub techno workout with cosmic effects, subtle chords and intermittent spurts of chasm-deep piano.
