Second time around for Echospace man Stephen Hitchell's debut full-length under the now familiar Variant alias, which originally surfaced back in 2008. On its' original release, The Setting Sun saw Hitchell abandon the dub techno rhythms he's most famous for, turning instead to the world of texture-led, dubbed-out ambience. In some ways, it's Echospace without the grooves, though given the sense of atmosphere that envelops those productions, that's no bad thing. It was apparently created using field recordings and vintage analogue gear, and recorded straight to reel-to-reel tape. This approach is best exemplified by the 23-minute title track, which remains one of Hitchell's most spellbinding compositions.
