When Jazz Corps member Tommy Peltier was forced to quit playing clarinet due to injury in 1970, his friend and sometime lover Judee Sill encouraged him to start songwriting. With her assistance, and a few key guitar chords, he began to record his compositions at home. These early 1970s recordings were eventually gathered together on Chariot of Astral Light, a CD-only 2005 release. Spanish crate-digging label Mapache Records has now decided to issue the album on vinyl for the first time, so wax enthusiasts can revel in its softly spun charms. While Peltier is naturally at the fore as vocalist and guitarist, Sill provides backing vocals, organ, guitars and even lead vocals on a number of cuts. It's a quietly beguiling set that deserves wider attention.
