As with many of the best compilations, the concept behind These Are The Breaks is fiendishly simple. It gathers together 12 tracks from the Ubiquity and Luv N Haight catalogues (both vintage re-issues and newer material) that have been heavily sampled by artists including Beyonce, Talib Kweli, DJ Shadow, J Dilla and Beck. The source material itself is, of course, all high grade, from the head-nodding soul groovery of Soft Touch and Mike James Kirkland, to the boom-bap funk breaks of the Soul Searchers and P'Taah's beautiful floorfiller "Hold You Close". With detailed sleeve notes pointing out the sample usage, These Are The Breaks is a wannabe digger's dream.
