Perhaps the most exciting thing about Barry Lynn's work as Boxcutter is its improbable brilliance. A lot of his musical combinations, sideways steps and inventive fusions shouldn't work, yet by and large, they do and then some. The Dissolve, his fourth full-length for Planet Mu, is full to bursting with such crazed, unlikely genius magical blends of star-gazing boogie, two-step, wobbly rave, blissful electronica, nudisco, dub, breaks, jazz, slo-mo grooves, Balearica and god knows what else. On paper, it looks a mess, but it sounds great. It's melodic, memorable even monumental. He's a serious talent, all right.
