"Please Forgive My Heart" (funk version) |
XL Recordings present a three track taster of The Bravest Man In The Universe, the new LP from the self styled (and rightly so)'Soul Survivor' Bobby Womack. Filled with Womack's first original material since the 94 LP Ressurection Man, the new album is a welcome arrival in the aftermath of the singer's recent battles with cancer and if you haven't indulged then this 12" should be all the persuasion required. Featuring the production talents of Damon Albarn & Richard Russell, the title track alone is brilliant, as Bobby's dominant and charismatic voice is doused in a melting pot of programmed beats and warm electronic sounds set against the traditional instrumentation of piano & Womack's guitar playing. It's a generally a poignant and melancholic affair and the 12 has an accapella presumably to encourage budding producers to put that gravel growling vocal on their own work. The EP finishes with an alternative version of "Please Forgive My Heart" from the album where the instrumentation never overpowers Bobby's voice and the piano is perhaps is more prominent than ever.
