The man otherwise known as Black Jazz Consortium gives us two particularly brooding house cuts on the always excellent Mule Electronic label. Despite the common depth running through both, the single is definitely one of two halves, with wildly different moods being displayed on each side. Despite its dark sub-bass, A-side "Soul Music" is the brighter of the two, using an introspective chord refrain with a number of spoken word samples that compete for position within the mix. Flipside "Black Magic" is moodier track still, taking the same low frequencies but creating the mood out of the churning bassline, whilst melody is foregone for a single organ chord that hangs suspensefully in the air, whilst somewhere beneath the murk you can almost hear a twisted human voice struggling to get out.
