Shy FX's Digital Soundboy label continues to keep us on our toes; following on from a slew of funky bass music offerings plus Breakage's recent trance-infused smash hit "Fighting Fire", things take a different turn with this latest release from Blocks & Escher. The pair hark back to an earlier era of D&B with stripped back breaks, liquid funk elements and rolling, jungle business in "Shadow Play". Atmospherics whisper and curl around pattering bongo-esque drums, shimmying SFX and billowing bass. In stark contrast, "Miller" is a more tech-ed up incarnation on a sort of Break meets Alix Perez type vibe, with a tense, hissing intro, thumping drop and taught, clipped breaks with a moody rumbling b-line propelling it along.
