This year marks 20 years since jazz-funk fusionists Red Snapper released their first EP on Flaw Recordings. Hyena, their first album for three years, is something of a belated return to form. While it lacks a little of the fizz associated with their early material, there are still moments of greatness scattered throughout. Check, for example, the 23 Skidoo-ish warped jazz-funk of "Card Trick", the skewed jazz breaks of "Wonky Bikes" - blessed with some seriously impressive drumming from founder Rich Thair - and the delightful, horn-heavy swagger of "Lassoo". There's also a smattering of oddball post-punk moments dotted throughout, with the creepy "Mambety" and dubwise "Blue Chest" standing out.
