Delano Smith Deconstructed sees Berlin based imprint Sushitech revisit An Odyssey, the debut album from the label regular Delano Smith, enlisting Detroit royalty Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby to do the deconstructing. Released back in February, An Odyssey was accompanied by a 16-page booklet telling "The Detroit Story" through the eyes of Smith. This 12? seems to continue that narrative, with Planet E chief Carl Craig retaining "Midnight Hours" hi tech soul melodic core, yet cranking up the drama with some signature chord arrangements in the second movement and a wonderful switch in tone for the final third. On the flip Youthville instructor Mike Huckaby turns his cultured hands to "What I Do" adding a dash more motor city machine funk to Smith's unrelentingly happy soulful original, not to mention his own distinct looped vocals.
