Valley Road (We Are 1) sees Ann Arbour legend Tadd Mullinix grace Spectral Sound for the first time in some three years, and is the latest killer EP of 2013 under his newly shorn JTC moniker. Taking the initials-only approach to his work as James T Cotton, there's been a raft of vital output from JTC this year with 12" releases on Berlin label Killekill, Hoya:Hoya and fledgling Brooklyn operation Ansatz. The last time there was a meeting of minds between Spectral Sound and JTC, the On Time EP included a rather dashing Rick Wade remix and Valley Road sees the label commission another remix from a respected US house heaf with Strength Music boss DJ Qu reworking "Valley Road (We Are 1)". Regardless, it's the original title track from JTC that really impresses here with the jakbeat exponent adding his own distinct and rough-sided edge to soulful, hi-hat and chord driven Detroit house. For a taste of how real house music with real narrative sounds in 2013, Valley Road (We Are 1) is a good place to start.
