The Diary Instrumentals CD

Famously, The Diary was recorded in 2001, and saw J Dilla attempting to boost his rapping credentials on an expensively recorded, all-star vocal set. The original album lay dormant in the vaults for many years, before eventually seeing the light of day earlier this year. This alternate version strips the set back to its' instrumental bones, showcasing not only Dilla's impeccable beat-making skills - that was, after all, his forte - but those of guest producers including Madlib, Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, Nottz and Wajeed. That it's arguably stronger than the vocal version is testament not only to the late, great producer, but also those he chose to work with. Dusty, jazzy, baked and inventive, it's a fitting tribute to one of hip-hop's true greats.
