Those well versed in the history of dance music will know the story of the Hot Mix 5, the DJ tag team, radio hosts and label owners whose enthusiasm for the "warehouse sound" helped shape Chicago House throughout the 1980s. This compilation from Midnight Riot pays tribute to the crew, delivering two-discs packed with brand new re-edits and remixes of vintage Hot Mix 5 Records material. It's a hugely enjoyable listen, boasting contemporary tweaks from the likes of Fingerman, Kiko Navarro, Severino, Leo Zero and '80s Child that pay due reverence to the spine-tingling source material. Brilliantly, plenty of lesser-known Chi-Town classics get the scalpel treatment, though it's Crazy P man Ron Basejam's radical overhaul of Ralphi Rosario's "You Used To Hold Me" - complete with toasty new instrumentation - that really stands out.
