Original copies of Georges-Edouard Nuoel's 1975 contribution to the Now We're Going to Feature the Pianist in the Band series have recently been changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. Listening to this beautifully packaged reissue, it's easy to see why. Nouel is in fine form throughout, delivering impressively dexterous, on-form piano and electric piano improvisations over killer backing tracks that variously touch-on freestyle jazz-funk, Sun-Ra style spirutualism, Afro-Cuban sweatiness and frenetic interpretations of traditional jazz. Arguably the best moment of all, though, is atmospheric closer "Alfie", in which Nouel takes a considered and laidback approach to proceedings.
