Birmingham duo Free School cut an impressive swathe with Ranting & Raving, their debut release for the Tirk imprint last year, which successfully introduced them as shoegazing cosmiche wizards who dabbled in prog disco. Returning to the London imprint with the excellently named Unravelling after the Lottery EP, Free School have further developed that sound, with the title track an astounding slab of synthesizer heavy groove material filled with delicious reverb, motorik analogue tones and big slabs of percussion. Mark E steps up with his first remix offering of the year, transforming the track into a fizzing deep bumper that retains core elements yet still is indelibly stamped with the Merc boss's slow building touch. Flipside Free School excel even further with the calm of the opening bars to "I'm Not Nintendo" betraying the sudden explosion of analogue colour and ever swerving rhythmic texture that makes the track shine.
