As one half of Vex'd, whose 2005 album Degenerate is still held up as a proto-dubstep classic, Jamie Vex'd is rightly regarded in the highest of esteem. His new incarnation, Kuedo, on Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu label will not disappoint.
"Starfox" is the lead single off this mighty EP and it's a brilliant collage of test-tone bleeps, deep distorted leads and huge washes of computer game detritus, with only the barest beats to guide you through it all. The fact that you have to find your own path makes it all the more affecting and memorable. Shutter Light Girl is just another example of the genius production skills being presented here, this time beatless but with a viciously hollow-sounding lead taking the foreground.
Joy Construction has a woozy, stuttering beat that again is only a crutch to the incredible weight and depth of the instrumentation going on throughout the tune, which steadily goes more wonky as it progresses. Glow rounds off the EP by giving us a rolling and gurgling bassline, a full on-assault of synth parts and a sound effect of a plane taking off that brings you, only fleetingly, back into reality.
This EP will only continue Jamie's god-like status, and hopefully widen his pool of devotees even more.
