Andy Compton earned his production stripes as part of Devon-based deep house outfit The Rurals. You can here echoes of his deep house past in this solo album for his own Peng imprint. Musically, Compton's Soul offers a rich diet of loose, soft-focus soul songs - all silky-smooth vocals (Jaidene Veda, Divinti and Kafele share mic duties), lazy Rhodes and delicious synth-funk flourishes. Oh, and the odd sleazy, snaking sax line. It's very smooth and effortlessly horizontal, as if Compton has tired of making comfy dancefloor grooves and adopted a slower pace of life. If you enjoy organic, soul-flecked downtempo grooves, you'll love this.
