Review

Following on from the massive 'Speaker Freakin' 2006' 12", Paul Birken goes back to basics with a killer four tracker featuring three new and up-and-coming artists. He kicks proceedings off himself though, and 'Cats Drink Jag' is a classic Birken production, heavy as you like and with all manner of gnarly bass action and jackhammer beats and breaks, topped off with sub-rave stabs. Next up is Wiesbaden producer Axel Sohns, who has previously featured on the Teknite label. Here he contributes a feedback-heavy track, which melds tough skippy beats to squawking synth lines and wailing breaks. First up on the flip is Dublin artist Sunil Sharpe. Sunil has been a regular face in the best techno clubs in Ireland for some years, and his versatile but rock-hard DJ sets are reflected well in his production - with 'Monster Load' being a short and sweet example of driving distorted kicks and swirling noise breaks to slay the dancefloor. Finally we have brand new Japanese producer Naotaka Anada, who gives a more linear style, with a relentless riff and slicing sounds layered over a rock-steady beat.
