A refreshingly oddball take on post disco/house electronic music dynamics from newcomer Chicago Damn on Mark E's increasingly impressive Merc imprint. Whilst it's not clear exactly who Chicago Damn is, less time should be spent on their identity and more dedicated to just how engaging the music is. "Hold On" has a distinctly tribal feel thanks to the muggy sounding chants that work in unison with the thumping bass drum beat, but it's the multi faceted layers of melodies and instrumentation that make this a track that gloriously hard to pin down. On the flip, "Be Your Man" is much more immediately gratifying, with a punishingly heavy raw house groove conjuring mental images of Rick Wilhite being roughed up by Pepe Bradock. Expert usage of vocal samples and drum roll edits on a track that peaks and dips in all the right places mark Chicago Damn as one for the future.
