"Boss Nova's Second Pass" |
played by:Owen Jay (Uq/ Housewax/ Battibatti), Cez (Pop Your Funk), Gerd, Leif, Michael Terzian, Mehdi, Antonzap, Nicola Conte, Rndm, Aybee, Tommy Finger Jr.
Occupying a musical universe several thousand miles apart from the k'ed up antics of populist deep house imprints, Aybee's Deepblak imprint is single minded in its boundary pushing approach - with Afrikan Science's latest offering a near perfect example of the Deepblak ethos. The Boss Nova's Second Pass EP reworks the rhythmic template of the Brazilian style of music in dizzying, off kilter fashion flushing the surrounds with instantly recognisable themes of afro-futurism drenched with a uniquely soulful touch. The ease with which Afrikan Sciences weaves murky textures with stuttering otherworldly rhythmic templates and the distant desperate harmonics of a chain gang on "Hard Driving Man Driven Offcourse" couldn't really be replicated by anyone outside the Deepblak community. Elsewhere the unpronounceable "Lucjh" captivates with it's locked groove beatdown poise while the title track is the nearest thing to accessibility on an EP that demands your full attention.
